Has Rock Stopped Rolling?

If you live in major markets such as Philadelphia, Miami, Houston or Washington, D.C., the answer seems to be yes. All four cities have recently lost premier rock radio stations as ratings for the genre continue to slide nationwide, down 20% since 1998. What's filling the void? Urban hip-hop stations and Hispanic channels. Spanish-language radio ratings are up 30% since 1998. Meanwhile, hip-hop and R&B dominate today's airwaves. At any moment, only 6% of teens are listening to rock, compared to almost 20% listening to urban stations and 40% listening to Top-40 programming (which is predominantly hip-hop and R&B).

^Any of jiggers songs is a masterpiece. You just have to listen to it carefully.
The beats/The flow..i cant say anything about the lyrics.

Linkin parks lyrics arent the best..its all about a teens life.
What we like to bitch about etc..it doesnt apply to them.

Good Hip Hop i would say consists of

The Roots
Talib Kweli
Black Star
Mos Def
Kanye west

They are the ones to watch.
The real thing

anything really by kanye's good, even some of the ones he doesn't rap on.

but yeah the state of the radio now is just......eck. rock stations are going down, and every other station that isn't rock is turning to hip-hop. luckily in LA we have a good 4 or 5 rock stations, with different variety's, KROQ which plays almost every kind of rock, then there's indie, classic, hard/metal. but all the other stations have turned into 80% hip hop, w/ashley simpson or britney spears on the side

If you're looking for good rap also try out MF Doom / Madvillain. Also Deltron 3030 is a kickass concept album similiar to Gorillaz.

Linkin Park made Jay-Z's songs a million times better. 99 Problems absolutely sucked, and then when it was mixed with Points of Authority and One Step Closer, I just completely got hooked on the song! But honestly, rap is only good if you hear it once in a while. Otherwise I just can't stand it.

The Rolling Stone article mentions Philadelphia as one of the cities that lost a "premier rock station" recently. It's really funny to see some of the outrage people have shown. The fired DJ's even started the whole station over online, and started circulating a petition to bring them back, using the ridiculous slogan "You have no alternative!" (meaning that y100 was apparently the ONLY way in Philly to hear "alternative rock") And all of a sudden people who hadn't listened to that station in months were up in arms, furious that it had been replaced by an R & B station. I don't think they disliked R & B, it's just that we had about three stations for that now already.

Anyway, the whole thing was just ridiculous. It's stupid to make a martyr out of a commercial radio station that was the same as all the other ones except playing the same Franz Ferdinand song 10 times a day instead of the same Jay-Z song 10 times a day. I'm not taking sides in the rock vs. hip hop thing that seems to be happening here, I'm just saying commercial radio sucks either way. Which was what the post was originally about. :P
