VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Pope John Paul II, the Polish pontiff who led the Roman Catholic Church for more than a quarter century and became history's most-traveled pope, died Saturday night in his Vatican apartment. He was 84.
The announcement came from papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls and was distributed to journalists via e-mail.
"The Holy Father died this evening at 9:37 p.m. (2:37 p.m. EST) in his private apartment. All the procedures outlined in the apostolic Constitution `Universi Dominici Gregis' that was written by John Paul II on Feb. 22, 1996, have been put in motion."
RIP Pope John Paul II

sad he could not die where he was born and where he grew up.
i`ll never forget the day when he came to visit my hometown in 1999. 500 000 people gathered at the small airport just to find out he wouldn`t come cuz he was sick. 2 days later, early morning they say on tha radio he`s coming, again 500 000 people gathered. it was crazy. masses of people walkin on tha streets, goin in the same direction just to hear him say a few words and see his white helicopter.
he was the 1st pope who said there was no barrier between christianity and other religions.
i`ll miss him dearly but at the same time i`m happy he`s in a better place and free from suffering.

People make him out to be a god, hes not god, there is only one God, and hes not him, and catholics,( And the pope was a catholic) They pray to "Mary" and other idols which is a graven image, So that means that since The Pope was a catholic he prayed to Mary and Other idols, the Bible says (Exodus 20:4) Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, There are more chapters too.. ah, heres a good one, (Leviticus 26:1) Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, niether rear you up a standing image, niether shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the Lord your God. The Bible says, For I am the Lord your God, And I dont think the Pope wrote the Bible if im not mistaking, Now, Since the Bible says in like a hundred different places that Bowing down to idols is an abomination, and The Pope bowed down to idols, The Bible is always right, so you cant say im wrong casue im quoteing out of the Bible.

as Catholics.. we dont 'idolize' any saint or statue or 'person' such as the Pope. The Pope is the 'symbolic' leader of our faith chosen to do God's work here on earth. People bow or kneel to him in the same way people used to do when Jesus romed the earth... because the Pope is just that.. a 'representative'.. as for the Bible... I dont follow that.. because God only knows how many times that thing has been translated and how many times scriptures have been left out or added...
my final thought on this.. try tp be a bit more sensitive to others on the board who have felt such grief in the passing of the Pope.. you may mot know how deep his death may have affected others. I know you are entitled to your opinions.. all I ask is that you 'try' to be a bit more sensitive... religion is a touchy subject...

Im not catholic but i do respect what the pope ,as a man, has done, its not like 'wasting time' to check out the links and find out what he did in life but for what i read (quoted above) i understand you are not catholic? neither am i since my family is evangelic or something, not quite sure .
Im not a very religious person like go to church every sunday and such , in fact i think religion wont save you in the end but your faith in god (if you believe in god at all that is).
What i hate about non-catholic religions is that they tend to diss or look down on other religions or anything that goes against their belief , i so know that because i have this crazy cousin who is always telling me im gonna go to hell and how all the religions are wrong and even quoted the bible to show me how catholics are going to hell blah blah blah  and i just think he's a narrow-minded prick.
Anyways, i just think this isnt the place to argue about these things, if you dont have anything nice to say about the pope then dont say a word, all i know he was a great human being and will be missed for the acts of good he did in life. I admire him and respect him and im not even catholic ..uh huh, that's about it.

I agree with Ren.
But the very point that someone has to challenge the Pope and his relevance in a thread dedicated to us passing our respects to him. Its like so what if you think people see him as more important then he was, he was a great, brave man and deserves praises from those who respect him.
Its not like he went around declaring he was God himself or anything.

right.. he also didnt believe in any other form of 'man made' birth control... it still doesnt take away from what a great man he was. Like I mentioned before... right.. he also didnt believe in any other form of 'man made' birth control... it still doesnt take away from what a great man he was. Like I mentioned before... I dont agree with ALOT of things the church says.. (abortion, homosexuality, birth control etc..) but it still doesnt change my view on the Pope.. he was a great religious leader.. and his shoes will be difficult to fill.
Well said. I'm not a religious person at all though I was brought up a Roman Catholic. Wasn't sure what to make of a lot of the Pope's views however I did respect him for his strength and for not being afraid to upset people to gain progress. And also for getting a pair of shades off of Bono
Anyway I sat in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow on Sunday morning. They have a white wall there dedicated to his visit to that park in 1982. I remember it being a scorcher and I also got the day off school (yayyyyyy! ). I was just curious as to what sort of tributes, if any, had been left there. Its right on the top of a small hill and I must have sat there for about an hour watching people coming and going and paying their respects and praying. It was pretty humbling really if I'm totally honest. I think the best thing anyone can say about him is that he really believed and tried to make the world a better and safer place for us and for our kids. He brought religions together where they were divided before.
Next time I'm in that park it will be the Coldplay gig!!

At last Friday's U2 show, Bono dedicated the song "40" to the Pope and at the end of the song he hung the rosary the Pope had given him 5 years ago on the mic stand. A single spotlight remained on the mic stand as he walked off stage and then rest of the band walked off. Very moving.
Here's a pic (I didn't take this picture):

up to you, dont get so defensive
just it seemed to drag on
A song for the man !!
Old pirates, yes, they rob I;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the 'and of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it:
We've got to fulfil de book.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
'Cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;

in fact, i am spiritual. and that's why i hate all this pomp and circumstance over one guy. and in fact, i know and understand it all (i heard his biography, and have read about his deeds), that's why i'm more circumspect about it and also cynical.
this guy wants to plant catholicism in Asia...asks like a dozen countries to invite him...all turn him down...except for India. He goes to India. Now, in India, Catholic Portugese and Spaniards ran the Inquisition against the locals just as the Inquisition was run in Europe. Thousands upon thousands were killed in the name of the pope and of his religion. Knowing this history, and knowing how this pope apologized to the native Americans in South America when he visited there, he was politely asked that he apologize. Not only he didn't apologize, he angered the Hindus by asking his bishops and cardinals to turn his gracious hosts--the Hindus and Muslims and Sikhs and Jains and Parsis of India--into Catholics.
I hate such bigots!
he may have done good for his followers, but that's about it. I can understand that the (observant) Catholics will mourn him. But to me, he was just another in an unbroken line of popes...men among men just like other men, who used religion to divide humanity...
and by the way, the election of a pope isn't decided by some "god" in some "heaven", but by like 100+ cardinals, who are all thinking about how to increase the reach of Catholic church at the detriment of all other religions and faiths of humanity. This last pope got elected because he was from Poland...and Poland was smack in the middle of Cold War politics.
I bet you the new pope will be some guy from Africa or South America, since that's where catholic converts are being found. Or perhaps even from Asia/India....if they can have a guy that looks like those Africans or Asians or South Americans, it'll be more easy to convert those folks.
I wonder why this 'God' never wants to get a female pope.
I also wonder how the center of catholicism is in Rome...is it because of mere politics, that the Roman empire was where the pot of gold and the earthly power was...that's how the bishop of Rome got to be the earthly prince of "the" church... I wonder how in about 2000 years of recorded history, no dissenter's voice was allowed to come in the way of the power of the Roman bishop.

It's not because of Rome, its in general respect, flags were down all over the world.
since when did Americans (that too G.W.!! lol) care what the rest of the world did.

Ya know. I find it incredibly disrepectful for you to come on here and to bad mouth a dead person that we're all mourning. hahaha..that's just so crazy!! CRAZY!!
like i said, i realize its bad for criticizing him (legitimate criticism, not "badmouthing" like you put it) after he's dead. but my overarching point is/was that he's just some head of a religion...he did most of the things that were good for his religion and for his posterity, not out of the greatness of his heart of anything.
so i just don't see what the big deal is for America to officially mourn his passing. Americans (and others) are of course welcome to privately mourn (even that is kinda weird from my viewpoint, but that's just me), but I don't know if American government should be involved the way it is.
It's all G.W.'s fault!! now that's crazy!! lol

just to be clear, i'm just cynical about any fellow man/woman who is all powerful and is going to tell me what's moral and immoral, or what's right and wrong. this goes for leaders of all faiths who get to be so powerful. unfortunately (or fortunately), only the catholics have such a pyramid of power, on top of which sits the pope. i thought pious and religious people didn't care for earthly power...to me, true godly people are happy just to be instruments of peace and love. Mahatma Gandhi comes to mind as a great example....he even gave up wearing suits.... compare that to the pictures of the pope visiting africa in his flowing white robes while the natives are half-naked!
just a side-note: this pope, thanks to him being all-powerful, may also be responsible for the spread of AIDS in Africa during his papacy (because of his policy of being anti-condom).

why is it such a big deal that some man died?? i don't get it, really. i mean, he was elected as pope by his fellow cardinals.
nobody likes to say bad things after someone dies, but all this glorification of this pope is kinda too much, really. :dozey:
i mean, this guy goes to Brazil and tells of the 7th Day Adventists and Southern Baptists and others that they're "foxes" preying on his catholic "sheep."
then, he goes to india and tells his bishops and others to "harvest" the souls of hindus who're living in darkness and who're heathens.... so basically, he's a partisan among all others like him, who're only concerned about increasing the numbers of their own followers.

this is true... I hate my president.. he's a total knob...
as for bad mouthing the pope.. thats where I find it a bit disrespectful... he was a mere mortal, like the rest of us.. yes.. but he was a Ponificate of MY religion... can you get that thru your head.. MY, I never looked up to him as some god or anything.. I just had some respect for a man who lived his entire life for something he believed in.. and helped make the world a better place.. (in some places, he was successful)
YOUR opinions are your own, but dont disrespect me or my faith because YOU dont happen to believe in the Catholic religion.. Like I have said MANY times before.. I dont agree with the chruch... they are as crooked as any other organization.. driven by politics as well... but I would never doubt my faith in God. period.

I'm not asking you to doubt your faith in god. Since you agree that its about politics and power, I guess you do know/realize that the position of "pope" has really nothing to do with one's faith in God. I don't know if the pope equals religion to you. I know many god-fearing catholics who actually don't give a damn what one guy who people call 'pope' thinks about gays or condoms or premarital sex or anything else.
I never meant to disrespect or question anyone's faith in god.
On a side-note, you might be very interested in reading "Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas" by Elain Pagels (Princeton University).
(03) Jesus says: (1) "If those who lead you say to you: ?Look, the kingdom is in the sky!? then the birds of the sky will precede you. (2) If they say to you: ?It is in the sea,? then the fishes will precede you. (3) Rather, the kingdom is inside of you, and outside of you." (4) "When you come to know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will realize that you are the children of the living Father. (5) But if you do not come to know yourselves, then you exist in poverty, and you are poverty."
it's mind-blowing stuff!

actually, i find it surprizing that me wondering what a big deal is about pope's passing makes me somehow disrespect people on here or their faith/religion. i mean, really... it's actually mistyfying how anyone with just a little contrarian view is asked to shut up and is called names.

it's cool how he connected with so many young folks... makes me wish more of the spiritual leaders of all faiths would try to make such connections with young people, in order to bring about a liberal, loving, next generation...
