Hey,

I need your help, since I'm going to the netherlands next wednesday. I wonder what is cheapest way to travel from the german border (bad bentheim) to amsterdam. I'm planning on going by train. the cheapest connection i could find was 26 Euro. Are there any cheaper tickets available like special tickets. And what is cheapest way to stay in amsterdam for one night? I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks

eline.

I think by train is the best way of travelling.. I don't think there are other direct connections from Germany to Amsterdam (other than flying, but that's even more expensive than going by train)
What are you gonna do in Amsterdam?

Hostels are probably cheapest (apart from sleeping on the streets, but that doesn't sound particularly comfortable). Sleeping in a dorm room (so with other people) is usually cheepest and there it's relatively easy to get a bed at the last minute. You can also book a private room, but obviously they are somewhat more expensive. I suggest you use google and compare prices.

Train is probably the cheapest way. But you can never trust the NS, there always delays.

Dutch people have a tendancy to complain about the rail company, but it actually isn't all that bad. Not compared to how it is in England anyway from what I hear.

eline.
02-04-2005, 11:07 PM
Yeah, the english railways are even worse because there isn't just one company. But I hate the train because it's so expensive here in holland. And I've never travelled by train without having delays so.. I think we've got all the right to complain about it :P

Jette
02-04-2005, 11:12 PM
I haven't experienced that many delays so far but I don't go by train all that often and when I do usually less than 1,5 hour at a time. They are getting expensive though! They keep having these small increases in prices, like 3%, but they do it quite often!

Anyway it's not like whole trains disappear or anything, just some delays.

This thread suddenly reminded me of something I saw on the news some time ago. It was about the Dutch Railway company. They had taken over an area in the Northern of England I think it was. All the people were so thrilled that the NS was taking over because apparently the NS has such a good reputation and maybe now the constant delays and cancellation of trains would end. Kind of ironic to see all those people rejoice about the company that we constantly complain about. Mind you, the company before the NS seemed to have really messed up....

eline.
02-04-2005, 11:22 PM
Whaha, no how much would the prizes increase if they would lose trains..
I don't travel that very often by train, but even going to Amsterdam once per two weeks costs me half my pocket money..

Ireentje
03-04-2005, 12:45 PM
I'd go for travelling by train too, then in Amsterdam just take the subway or the tram. Anyway, 26 euro's for a train ticket, ridiculous right :) I've got myself a discount card for the Dutch railways, it saves me almost half the money.

Jette
03-04-2005, 08:57 PM
They also have a song called 'mooie ellebogen' which is Dutch for 'beautiful elbows'. :D

Jij hebt hele mooie ellebogen...

eline.
03-04-2005, 09:01 PM
Yes, I've got that one! They also have 'Dutch song' .. but that's even more strange than Mooie ellebogen :)

Ireentje
03-04-2005, 09:03 PM
They're both really really strange :) But who cares, they're by Coldplay, thus cool :D

eline.
03-04-2005, 09:07 PM
Do you know the lyrics of 'Dutch song'? (As you're so great at the lyrics, I'm asking you Ireentje :P)

Jette
03-04-2005, 09:12 PM
I have never heard of 'Dutch song'!?

I hate asking this but I would really appreciate either of you sending me the song. :anxious:

Hi, I know the lyrics:

Ik ben een ezel, ja ik ben een ezel, ik hou van jou
Ik ben een ezel, ja ik ben een ezel, ik hou van jou
Ik vind dat stro lekker, ik vind springen leuk
Ik ben een ezel, ja ik ben een ezel, ik hou van jou.

funny huh ;)

Jette
03-04-2005, 09:42 PM
Hahaha!! I never would have gotten that! Thanks!

I love how English people pronounce 'leuk'.

*HildeKe*
03-04-2005, 09:45 PM
When the English try to speak dutch, it kinda sounds like german :P

Jette
03-04-2005, 09:49 PM
It does! My brother's friend, who is English, came to stay with us for a couple of days and said Dutch sounds just like German. It's so weird because for me it's very different. It's kind of like people saying Keane is like Coldplay. When you're not familiar with it, you can't see/hear the difference.

*HildeKe*
03-04-2005, 09:54 PM
I think it's sexy when the English speak french. :wink3: That I prefer over them speaking dutch or german

eline.
04-04-2005, 02:28 PM
I believe I've never heard that.. But I can imagine how it could sound
The lyrics of 'Dutch song' are great, by the way! If you didn't told me, I guess I would've never found out what Chris was singing.. :)

Jan
04-04-2005, 02:31 PM
The way chris sais 'leuk'
It sounds like 'loik'

eline.
04-04-2005, 02:35 PM
It's soo cute.. :)

Ireentje
04-04-2005, 08:03 PM
Chris is cute :D His pronunciation of 'lekker' is very odd too, it sounds something like 'laycker' and he pronounces 'ezel' like 'aitzer' :)

Jan
04-04-2005, 08:06 PM
He has a very heavy accent.

Ireentje
04-04-2005, 08:28 PM
I bet his Dutch friend just taught him some lines at random, he's probably got no idea at all what he's singing :)

eline.

How dare you, stealing my ideas! :P

Hehe yeah.. or Chris falls for elbows :P

Jan
05-04-2005, 03:24 PM
Gwyneth's elbows

eline.
05-04-2005, 03:28 PM
I haven't ever looked at her elbows.. but in Dutch song Chris sings 'ik ben een ezel, jij bent een ezel'. Would that be supposed for Gwyneth too? :P

Jan
05-04-2005, 03:32 PM

I'm back home now. I gotta say that I really love Amsterdam.

I went to the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank Huis and we went to the Grachten.

The rest of our time, we spent in the town... we went shopping, there are many great shops.

In the evening we went to some pubs and then to a club or a disco. Some of them are really nice. And I really liked the coffeeshops.

One day we walked thru the red light district by night. I have to say we were really surprised and shocked.

No, probably not, but that's Holland's reputation here. Probably the reason why many foreigner go there, but was't mine.

But you're right, Dutch people aren't stoned constantly. But there are so many coffeshops and they are full all the time. So...
And there are even those magic mushrooms legal in Holland.

But I have to say I had a really good impression of the Dutch people, most of them were really kind. And they seemed to be very relaxed. Guess why. :P

I didn't ride a bike coz the fact you can't break made me feel scared...

And about the coffeeshops.. just joking :P But it ís true that almost all tourist go to a coffeeshop when they're in Holland, isn't it? :)

Petit Prince
05-06-2005, 11:03 AM
Yeah, I mean the bikes you can rent. The other bikes are probably different.

And what you said is true. Of course every tourist has to go there. They are a great invention. There should be some in Switzerland too.

eline.
05-06-2005, 11:09 AM
:D agree with that.. I'm going to Switzerland this summer :P

Where in Switzerland are you going to?

eline.
05-06-2005, 11:20 AM

Petit Prince

Yeah, I know that. It's in the Tessin, the part of Switzerland where you spak Italian.

I've been there with my class a few years ago.

Dutch is soo hard to understand for foreigners :P Aber Holländer sind ganz gut in andere Sprachen  (well, that's not completely true, but we háve to be good in other languages because no one understands our language :P )

Oh noo.. I can't understand Italian :stunned: German is OK, but Italian.. help!
But is it a good place to go on vacation?

Petit Prince
05-06-2005, 11:32 AM
Yeah it's really a nice place. You shoulda go to Ascona, it's one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. It's a lot warmer there than where I live.

I don't think it would be difficult to learn Dutch for someone who speaks German. But when I hear people talkin I don't understand anything.

Aad

Dutch is a strange language...I don't even really like it....And I'm dutch!!

Bye the way, I really like the place in Switserland called Bellwald...
ever been there?

eline.
05-06-2005, 11:36 AM
Ascona.. I'm gonna remind that ;)

I think it isn't difficult to understand Dutch when you speak German.. but speaking might be harder to learn

Aad
05-06-2005, 11:37 AM
a lot of words automatically make sense when you hear them, because they are closely related to german words..

Petit Prince
05-06-2005, 11:45 AM

Yeah, well, dutch people also have a lot of different accents, which makes it harder to understand them
Even I don't understand certain accents

eline.
05-06-2005, 11:49 AM
not? :) From where in Holland are you then?

Petit Prince
05-06-2005, 11:52 AM
Do people in Amsterdam have a strong accent?

eline.
05-06-2005, 12:00 PM
I actually don't know.. many people in Amsterdam speak Standard Dutch, but there are also people that I can't understand because of their accent

Petit Prince
05-06-2005, 12:14 PM
Hm I didn't understand much, but maybe that wasn't because of their accent...

eline.
05-06-2005, 12:26 PM
:D Is it just like when you go to France?.. once you say one word in French, they think you can speak the language and start talking to you in an amazing :P speed

Ireentje
05-06-2005, 12:32 PM
They start correcting you in France too. I once had this guy correcting me for not pronouncing 'croissant' correctly, he kept hammering on for 10 minutes about the proper pronunciation. I was like, 10 or something :P

Petit Prince
05-06-2005, 12:34 PM
Exactly. But in France I don't have that problem coz I can speak French. But I always have to ask them to speak slower.

eline.
05-06-2005, 12:38 PM
I can't speak French :(
The only French sentence I know by heart is a movie quote :P

Ireentje
05-06-2005, 12:41 PM
...why did this post multiply itself?

Ireentje
05-06-2005, 12:41 PM
Yeah is it just me, or do people just speak faster in some countries? I always get that feeling with the Spanish, the Italian and the French people. Okay, maybe with Italian and Spanish my problem is more that I can't tell one word from another, but I'm actually quite okay at French, and still I get the feeling they speak incredibly fast, a problem I don't have with for instance the Germans or the english.

eline.
05-06-2005, 12:43 PM
You should hear me speak Dutch.. I bet no foreigner can make a word out of that :P

You're right.
I've taken spanish classes for two years but I always have to ask the Spanish to talk slowly. When I start speaking spanish with them they answer my at high speed :P

Even the French talk quite fast. Since I'm from Belgium I'm bilingual dutch/french but sometimes it's still hard to understand every single word they use ;)

eline.

(in die Nederlandse zinnen tel ik maar liefst 8 engelse woorden)

wat is nederlands toch mooi

Nederlands is afschuwelijk! Heb je ooit geprobeerd het werkwoord 'deleten' in het nederlands te vervoegen?

eline.
08-06-2005, 04:44 PM
By the way, I believe I've asked this before but.. does everyone outside the Netherlands use a cheese-slicer too? It seems a typically Dutch thing to me, so I was just wondering...

Oke this is stupid.. but I just wanna know, okey? :P

Ireentje
20-06-2005, 08:32 PM
Even hotter. It's 32 degrees in the friggin shadow. Well it was anyway, today. I went for a swim with Eline today :)

Ambergris
20-06-2005, 09:01 PM
Hey that's hot... did you go to the north sea?
I like here because it's always between 10°c and 20°c (min and max)

Ireentje
20-06-2005, 09:05 PM
No, we went to some lake nearby. Well it's not really a lake, smaller, but it was cool anyway. Waaaay cooler than in the blazing sun . Over here temperatures vary from -10 (but that's rare) and 35 degrees.

Ambergris
20-06-2005, 09:11 PM
What about global warming? then you would get like 40°c in some years.

That would suck... hope Europe is not getting another hot wave again. :/

Ireentje
20-06-2005, 09:18 PM
Me too. By the way, may I correct your English? It's not 'getting other' but 'getting another' over there.

Ambergris

Ireentje
21-06-2005, 07:23 PM

Jan
21-06-2005, 07:29 PM
Ow right! He used to live in Voorschoten, but now he lives in Amsterdam.

Ireentje
21-06-2005, 07:59 PM

Jan
21-06-2005, 08:03 PM

Ireentje
21-06-2005, 08:12 PM

Hoe ga jij naar het Coldplayconcert eigenlijk?

Jan
22-06-2005, 04:45 PM
