The phrase Achtung Baby itself comes from The Producers I'm pretty sure. Also it is the faintest of faintest whispers but Bono does actually whisper 'Achtung Baby' on The Fly just before the bridge/Edge's sick solo around 2.14 seconds in. But you can barely hear it but if you concentrate REALLY hard you can hear something at 2.15 that sounds a bit like scratching. That's him whispering Achtung Baby. But it's there even if it is underneath layers of pure awesomeness!
I'm trying but I can't hear it! :D Wikipedia explains all alternative names, and the one they chose was definitely the best.
They only mentioned "Adam" with no explanation, but I also figured it was meant to refer to the biblical Adam.

He said he watched from the back "like when he was a kid" I believe the words were something like that

You are so right. It really is the gold standard of reinvention! I've never heard such a radical change in sound from any band. Not even The Beatles experienced such a radical shift I feel. For them it was more progressive as each album went by.

I just bought Achtung Baby's 20th Aniversary 2CD edition and I was wondering why does "Alex Descends into Hell for a Bottle of Milk"/"Korova 1" (awesome song by the way) has a reference to Clockwork Orange on the credits...

I'm sure you'll love these 3 songs below. They are so good they may become your favourites!
Disappearing Act from The Unforgettable Fire bonus edition. That's really good. The vocals Bono recorded for that were recorded in 2009 but the music around his vocals is from 1983/84.
U2 "Disappearing Act" - YouTube
Love Comes Tumbling which was previously on their 1985 Wide Awake In America EP, every track on that EP is in the bonus cd of The Unforgettable Fire is fantastic as well.
U2 - Love Comes Tumbling - YouTube
If you don't have The Unforgettable Fire remastered 2 disc edition then I suggest you get it. It is remastered beautifully and the extra cd worth full of previously unreleased/b sides/a few live tracks is outstanding. I bought it when it came out over two years ago and it's one of the best cd purchases I have ever made.
This is my favourite from The Joshua Tree remastered re release. It's fantastic.
Wave of sorrow U2 - YouTube

The first song on The Unforgettable Fire, "A Sort of Homecoming," I know backward and forward — it's so rousing, brilliant and beautiful.
It's one of the first songs I played to my unborn baby. :D
Well it's obviously a standalone song, with some different themes to Where The Streets Have No Name, but they do have some similarities like -
"running across the fields/hills/valleys" and "tearing down city walls/the walls that hold you inside"...

I always thought of The Unforgettable Fire (the album as a whole, but the title track mainly) being the blueprint for The Joshua Tree and in particular Where the Streets Have No Name.
In turn, I see the song Zooropa as being the flipside of Where the Streets Have No Name. It's the same as it, but also the exact opposite.
Then City of Blinding Lights is a return to Streets.
I see TUF, Streets, Zooropa and COBL to all be part of a series of songs.
Nikola
23-02-2012, 02:05 PM
Yes, TUF and TJT are very similar albums.
And if you play WTSHNN after MLK it's almost a perfect continuation.
I don't really see the connection of Zooropa and COBL to the songs I mentioned.
But yeah, maybe Zooropa could be the antipode and COBL's chiming riffs do sound similar to TJT era songs.
TUF may be my most played album. But I almost never listen to Elvis Presley And America.
I think it's a really crappy song and an obvious filler. And why the hell is it the longest?
EDIT:
But TJT is still my favorite album. The first 4 and last 3 songs are my favorites. The songs in between are "odes to America".
And my least favorite song is exactly in the middle - Red Hill Mining Town.
So after that song comes a sort of crescendo that ends with Exit, still one of my favorite U2 songs, it's very scenic.
And Mothers Of The Disappeared I see as a kind of bonus song, it's so beautiful... The last 2 songs are the "Enoest".

Right. And they both have that sort of driving, "this is so freeing" type of sound to them, too. A lot of U2's music in the '80s had that sound, though :p.
It's interesting you say your least favorite song from The Joshua Tree is "Red Hill Mining Town"-so often I run into people who pick "Trip Through Your Wires" for their least favorite. Myself, I like both, so...*Shrugs*. I agree with you on "Exit", too, that song is so dark and haunting and weird. I remember the first time I listened to the album I was confused at first and wondered if something had happened to my CD, 'cause "Exit" starts so freaking quietly.
I always thought "City Of Blinding Lights" might've fit in somewhere in the Unforgettable Fire era-sort of alongside a B-side like "The Three Sunrises" or the title track from the album itself.
"Zooropa" a reverse of "Streets"? Hm. Interesting thought. I may have to go listen and see if I can hear that.

I think Red Hill Mining Town is fantastic. For U2 to write a song about the minors strike in the UK in the mid 80s was something inspirational, particularly to those affected and interested by the minors strike of 1984/85. It showcases the brilliance of the album as a contemporary piece of work in the 1980s and as a musical/historical piece of brilliance. My least favourite songs on the album are One Tree Hill and Trip Through Your Wires but even then those two songs are still very good. The Joshua Tree really is faultless. If Achtung Baby isn't the greatest album of the last 30 years, then Joshua Tree is. ;)

Right. :nice: Apple's gonna be a U2 fan...
And Exit is so awesome because it sounds like... night. I think it's an important part of the album because it captures best the feeling they were going for the album - a night in the Mojave desert. It does start quietly, especially the vocals. It's stripped down so the bass is prominent, even more so in the middle and the end of the song, if you have good speakers it sounds great. Eno's ambient stuff...

Honestly I didn't know about the historical background of the song. So it has more meaning to me now. I do like it though, no songs on the album I dislike like Elvis etc. on TUF. I think the album is brilliant because it sounds so timeless, it does not sound like an 80s album. It probably has a lot to do with not using drum machines. Like, Prince's When Doves Cry is now on VH1 and it's so obviously an 80s song. I love Lary's drums and drumming style, I think it's as unique is Edge's guitar playing style.
P.S. Not that there's anything wrong with songs sounding like the "80s". I love 80s music.

Sexy, sexy song, that one. One of my favorites off Pop.
I'm quite big on this version of it as well:
If You Wear That Velvet Dress - U2 ft Jools Holland - YouTube
Got the whole "smokey bar/lounge" into a "big band sort of number" deal going on.
I love your description of "Exit", too, by the way. Someone pointed out to me once that I seem to have a thing for music that has a nighttime vibe about it all, or that references night, or moons, or whatnot. And I think they're right, the darker and moodier the music, the more I tend to like it for some reason.
Not to say I don't like bright, upbeat, sunny stuff, though, 'cause I do. I'm a generally optimistic person, so I like music that has an uplifting, positive feeling or message to it. One of the big reasons why I love U2, after all :).

Glad you like that version :). The piano in it...I am always a sucker for a song with some fantastic piano work.
Not a bad song, that George Michael one. I do tend to like that sort of sound from time to time-some artists can just pull it off and make it sound really good/sexy, as it should be.

It was a couple of days ago now but The Joshua Tree turned 25 on the 9th of March. Cited as one of the greatest albums of all time, the album transformed the career of U2 forever and ensured their place in music history. Below is an article from Stereogum for those interested.
http://intothemusic.ca/images/sized/images/covers/U2_-_The_Joshua_Tree-300x300.png
Over the past year, Adele’s 21 has sold a few gajillion copies and sent plenty of music writers on soul-searching journeys trying to figure out why that happened and what it means. My own personal theory: For the first time in a while, a studio album sounds like a greatest-hits collection; it’s not hard to imagine any of the album’s tracks getting serious radio rotation 20 years from now. Over the years, we’ve heard an elite few studio albums that have that distinction; I’d say it belongs to records as disparate as Def Leppard’s Hysteria, Michael Jackson’s Bad, and Taylor Swift’s Fearless (the last one before 21). The first Killers album was about half of a greatest hits album, but it loses momentum as it goes. And then there’s U2, who have four or five of those albums to their credit. The greatest of those is The Joshua Tree, and it turns 25 today.
It’s weird to think that it took less than five years for U2 to get from the wailing sincerity of The Joshua Tree to the monolithic but wry dance-pop of Achtung Baby, but that’s what happened. And maybe it happened because U2 did everything that a huge and sincere rock band could plausibly be expected to do on The Joshua Tree, and after that, they had to embark on the sort of soul-searching journey that first led them to the embarrassing and self-aggrandizing blues toe-dipping of Rattle & Hum and then, finally, to Achtung Baby when that move didn’t work out. U2 were, of course, already a huge rock band by the time they got to The Joshua Tree, and previous efforts War and The Unforgettable Fire already sounded something like greatest-hits albums. They’d already worked with the production team of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. They’d already contributed a bunch of songs that will continue to live on classic-rock playlists until long after we’re all dead. But The Joshua Tree represented an absolute refinement of everything they’d already been doing. They dialed back the save-the-world theatrics, dialed up the sensual throb, and they came out sounding more calm and confident than ever before. They loosely patterned the album around the vague theme of America, and Americans rewarded them by buying 10 million copies of it.
It’s easy to make fun of U2 for their messianic tendencies, tendencies that are on full display on the album, but the final product is just bulletproof. The opening salvo (“Where The Streets Have No Name,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” “With Or Without You,” “Bullet The Blue Sky”) is one for the ages, and the album doesn’t really fall off in quality after it. “Trip Through The Wires” is the sort of honking-harmonica bar-rock anthem that only Springsteen and maybe (maybe) Mellencamp were doing this well at the time, and it’s a good indicator of why the band felt like they could pull off the BB King experiments of Rattle & Hum. “Exit” is an overwrought stomp-wail that somehow comes off way better than it should. “Mothers Of The Disappeared” is one of the prettiest, most graceful moments in a catalog rich with them. Bono tried out goddam spoken-word on “Bullet The Blue Sky” and ended up sounding elemental and prophetic rather than ridiculous. The big stylistic leaps don’t feel big here, since the band sounded like nothing was outside its reach. It’s a band at the precise moment where they can’t fuck anything up, and there’s not a single weak part in the album’s 50 minutes. That’s really something. And to this day, the album is a huge part of the reason that the band gets to earn ungodly sums of money with gigantic stadium shows. Respect is due.
So: What’s your favorite song from The Joshua Tree? Or your favorite memory from the album? Does “With Or Without You” just give you Ross and Rachel flashbacks, or is there something more substantive there? Or maybe Ross and Rachel flashbacks are enough? Share with us in the comments section, and check out some videos from the album below.

I see. Well, here's hoping they will eventually make it available for mere mortals such as myself. Or I could just torrent it one day
As far as U22 is concerned, it's suppose to only go out to resubscribed or new members of U2.com. There's always a possibility you might find it on eBay. But if a U2.com member is caught selling their copy on eBay or elsewhere, they will automatically be banned from U2.com. So good luck...member only copies are hard to come by and that's the reason.
U22 hasn't been given to members yet that I know of. I resubbed on February 15 and I still don't have it yet. It might take another month or so. Live Nation is real slow about putting out new member stuff.
And my vote for the best B-side/remix album is Artificial Horizon. Again, that's another one of those member only deals and might be hard to find or might be very expensive.

I like Bono's voice more now than in the early 80s (first 3 albums).
And I've been listening to No Line quite a lot, surprisingly. I do want that "meditative companion album to NLOTH".
Also the "rock" album. But the dance music Will.I.Am/Guetta/RedOne colab album sounds like a disaster.
Haha Chris (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/aug/23/u2-trio-unreleased-albums-bono) the worried fanboy. :P And Bono calling Eno, Lillywhite and Lanois a "dysfunctional family" (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/oct/25/u2-new-album-danger-mouse). Sorry for digging up ancient news. :D
^Edit: Seriously? They have these ideas for so long, 3-4 years, they should probably start releasing the albums one by one as Chris suggested.

And yeah, Magnificent is magnificent. It sounds.... wide. Which was probably their intention. I like the video too. Also shot in Morocco like that pic.
The first 3 songs on No Line are perfect, a great start. Nothing beats the opening 3 songs of The Joshua Tree though, but still... pretty damn good.
It wasn't me who said that, but I'll say this - at first, I thought that that song is... awkward, but now I love it, both versions.
And I do love City Of Blinding Lights, but I wouldn't proclaim it the new anything. I think there are better songs on that album.

Nope...no news yet. The only thing I do know is that Bono is not in the studio. He and his wife were last seen in Hollywood promoting their clothing line, Edun.
And my favorite song off of the now 25 year old JT album is Streets. It has stood the test of time, and is timeless. It's also their most powerful piece...as seen here...of course MLK is a good opener to Streets, but so is Amazing Grace...

Oh I totally agree with you about Sometimes...it's a real tearjerker, especially live. It was huge. And hearing Bono getting all choked up while he was singing it, made it even harder to hold the tears back. You just wanted to jump up on stage and give the guy a huge hug.
And someone earlier said that Yahweh wasn't good...have you seen U23D? Yahweh was a perfect ending. It's very beautiful.

Well, I had been a casual fan for 15 years. Then after I saw them live, finally, for the first time back in 2001, I've been an obsessed fan ever since. I have just about every book on them, and have read them all...except for U2 by U2...I finally found a hand held version of the book instead of trying to read the coffee table version...I gave up on that a long time ago. But I'll be up to speed this summer when I have more time. Other than that, I have Facebook to thank to keep me up to speed as to where the guys are and what they're up to if anything. Plus too I have a huge U2 family of friends to keep me up to speed as well.
Speaking of a U2 Encyclopedia...you might want to pick this up...but keep in mind it hasn't been updated since 2003...

That 360° stage was genius, they increased the capacity of venues by 25% with it.
The CLAW, as it was called, was totally amazing and out of this world! It was the tallest structure ever made for a musical artist. When I stood underneath it, it was hard not to keep looking up...it was so huge and cool at the same time. It was so huge that you would want to buy tickets to more than one show to get the full effect of it.
I stood under all 3 different Claws four times...and I saw it's beauty from a distance twice. It was really like a spaceship!
The Claw became like an old friend too. I saw it first in 2009, and didn't see it again until 2011. Later last summer, they were sold at silent auction the day after the last 360 show. To this day nobody knows who bought them or where they went.
I miss The Claw.
At least one of them should have been saved and used at a museum like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It's part of music history and an engineering feat to boot! But Bono and the gang had no choice but to sell them...they were too expensive to keep in storage.

Man, I wish I could've seen the ZooTV tour. That performance of "Streets" from it was amazing.
*Shallow moment* And Bono. Holy f*ck, did he look sexy in that clip. Not to say he's not still good-looking or anything, he definitely is, but damn...the early '90s were good to that man.*/End shallow moment*
I loved the 360 performance, too-"Amazing Grace" was a very nice touch for that song. Definite chills with both performances. I love the "galloping horses" image, that's exactly what "Streets" sounds like. It's got that "escapist beauty" quality to it, that song, and I LOVE it when music makes me want to stretch my arms out bird-style and just fly or run away to some greater place or something like that.
I'm 27 years old, so I think I'm too young yet to have a "bucket list", but regardless, if I were to make one, seeing U2 at least once in my lifetime is DEFINTELY on there in the top portion somewhere. The VERY moment I hear that U2 is touring again, I will pay close attention to the date when tickets go on sale, and will do everything in my power to be present at my computer the very day they go on sale. I'm trying to make sure nothing stops me this time around from seeing them.
I do want that "meditative companion album to NLOTH".
Also the "rock" album. But the dance music Will.I.Am/Guetta/RedOne colab album sounds like a disaster.

But I guess they're probably waiting to finish every album and release them as a 3 disc set, which is going to be amazing. :wideeyed:
It would depend on how the Will.I.Am/Guetta one came out. If it was dance music along the lines of that "I'll Go Crazy..." remix (which I actually rather like. And I like the original song!) with a bit of "Discotheque" style thrown in as well, that could actually sound really interesting and cool (especially given that it'd be from 4 men in their 50s...that's the biggest challenge, trying to pull off that sort of sound at their age without people finding it awkward or "trying too hard to fit in").
But the other two albums? Yeah, agreed, definitely up for hearing those, too. Interesting to hear Chris giving advice-it's a tough call, if that stuff's been sitting around for years and there's not much else that needs to be done with it, yeah, I'd go ahead and start releasing that music post-haste. But if they want to noodle around with it a bit more, that would explain waiting. Don't want it to be too rushed, don't want to wait too long, either. Hm.
Ha, on my dad's birthday.
It has aged astonishingly well.
My dad's birthday's in March, too! On the 27th, but still... So he was just shy of 30 when The Joshua Tree was released. Me, I was...2 years old, would turn 3 later in the year.
"With Or Without You" has always been my favorite song from that album. That song is desert island material for me. I don't care how many times I've heard it over the years, I can never, ever tire of it. And I like that that review said something positive about "Trip Through Your Wires", I love that song. But it often seems I'm alone in that feeling.
(I like Rattle & Hum, too, but that's for another discussion)
I know. :D We were talking about the ways Coldplay could improve for the next album, and I said that they could definitely use more prominent basslines and sound more badass, like Bullet The Blue Sky, U2 in general.
This I would LOVE to hear. I like it when Coldplay taps into their darker side a bit, and they've got some great rock moments in their catalog, so yeah, if they were to go that route, I'd be all for it.
Heck, they could go beyond "Bullet The Blue Sky"-styling-I fully believe they could well have an Achtung Baby in them somewhere as well.
And I get it why people compare Lights and Streets, but I just don't feel it... it doesn't get me nowhere near as emotional as Streets. I prefer Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, even Miracle Drug.
In terms of positive feeling, I can see where "City of Blinding Lights" and "Streets" could compare. But in terms of raw emotion, yeah, I can see where you think "Sometimes" might fit better. Different emotions, but both equally poignant.
Like "Kite", "Sometimes" means a lot to me personally as well.
*Thinks to self* Do I have that U2 ultimate encyclopedia? I can't remember now. Hm.

I forgot to mention, as someone said before, if their dance album is along the lines of that I'll Go Crazy remix, I'll like it.

I also like your point earlier about Coldplay being more "bad ass" like Bullet the Blue Sky. Violet Hill was a proper gritty rock song that was brilliant but that's the closest. Yeah, definitely. Violet Hill is the ONLY proper rock song on the album, the only song they can perform without playing back strings and weird instruments. Too bad there weren't more songs like that on VLV. And Major Minus is the only "badass" song on MX. It's a shame they portion control their badassness and proper rockiness, so I wish that they would just go in that direction completely for the next album. The studio tweaks don't bother me, U2 does that a lot. They don't have to be completely stripped down songs like on their first 2 albums. I don't mind them experimenting.

There's also a picture floating around out there from years ago where he's tonguing...one of the Oasis brothers, if I recall rightly :p. Bono will flirt with pretty much anything that moves.
I've pretty much stayed out of the whole "Spider-Man" debacle. I heard a song from the show that Bono and Edge wrote on some show once, can't remember which one. And I've heard about the nightmare disasters that kept befalling the thing. And that's as aware as I've been of the whole mess.

You've been a fan for 15 before you saw them? :o I've been a fan for 1,5 months and I wanna see them so bad. :D And Coldplay.
I think I'll wait until they update that Encyclopedia, in the meantime, the internet and you people provide all the answers.
They changed the Claw 3x? And somebody bought them? What the fuck are they going to do with them? :wideeyed:
Yes! There were 3 Claws! Since it almost took a whole week to build and breakdown each Claw and with the tour schedule having only a few days apart for each city, that's when they decided to go with 3 stages. Most bands order/rent 2 stages on a tour so that they leap frog from city to city on the tour schedule. That's how bands like U2 and Coldplay play in 2 different cities back to back.
And when they sold the claws, there was a special website where you could go to see the advertisement. Basically, it was only the skeleton structure that was up for sale. As far as the speakers that hung from it and the 360 video screen as well as the needle, they kept that. Anyway, they sold it as a stage structure or could have been the outer part to a building.
Here's a documentary on how the Claw was created by scratch and how they did the whole thing...it's mind blowing...even the guys were blown away too!...

Have you seen them live?
Look at Bono's face @5:19 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=tsMsmiwxGAk#t=318s).
I cannot imagine how he must feel when he looks at that sea of people singing back his lyrics.
It's gotta be a whole nother level being in the audience instead of just watching it on the screen.
Bono has said before that he doesn't feel right unless he's in front of 25,000-60,000 people each night. He says he feels right at home on stage. In person he's very quiet and almost shy-like, but he's a very sweet man. Basically, he's the total opposite off stage.
And being in the audience of a U2 concert is like nothing you've ever experienced before in your life. I thought back in 2001 I was just going to another rock concert like Sting or George Michael, but I didn't. Most rocks shows you just need to see only once. But with experiencing a live U2 show, you get a much different feeling...after your first show, you'll want to see them a million times again. It's a feeling that can't be described with words. It goes from a rock show to being something very spiritual. When Bono says God is in the house...he is! It's like going to church but better. Their live music totally touches you to the core. After your first show you'll shout, "I get it!!! I can't explain it, but I get it!!!" And then you'll find yourself wiping away all those tears. After Bono hurt his back in 2010 and the threat of them to never come back, all those thoughts came back to me while at their re-opening show in Denver of last year. I was so happy they were back and healthy with even a new set list. I was a sobbing mess during the first half of the show. It was like I couldn't turn it off!
Anyway, mark my word, you'll remember the date of your first U2 show as if it were your birthday.
Mine was November 25, 2001, in Dallas, Texas, at Reunion Arena, and I was 7 rows up on the lower balcony on Adam's side of the stage...it makes me teary eyed just even thinking about it or even watching this...

Heck, I notice that when watching interviews sometimes. Which is why some of the attacks on him I've heard from people over the years always strike me a bit funny. Yeah, he probably does have a bit of an ego. Most musicians do. But he knows when to turn it on and off. He's also very self-deprecating, too.

I love what you said, Allegra, about Ali. Very true. I find it really admirable that he's been married to her for 30 years, and that they've been together even longer than that given they met in school. That's incredibly sweet and romantic and very un-rock star-like behavior. And she seems like a really lovely woman, too, from what I've read about her and such. Really patient and understanding and strong and smart (and gorgeous). "The Sweetest Thing" is my favorite U2 video, it's just so freaking adorable and, well, sweet, LOL. Love the song, too.
I'll check out that claw video at some point here, I'm very curious to know how the hell they got that whole thing set up and everything.

The funny thing with Miracle Drug is that for about 6 years after I bought the album I didn't realise it was The Edge singing the 'Beneath the noise' part.
Miracle Drug is a lovely tribute to Christopher Nolan. Found this quote by Bono on wikipedia.
"We all went to the same school and just as we were leaving, a fellow called Christopher Nolan arrived. He had been deprived of oxygen for two hours when he was born, so he was paraplegic. But his mother believed he could understand what was going on and used to teach him at home. Eventually, they discovered a drug that allowed him to move one muscle in his neck. So they attached this unicorn device to his forehead and he learned to type. And out of him came all these poems that he'd been storing up in his head. Then he put out a collection called Dam-Burst of Dreams, which won a load of awards and he went off to university and became a genius. All because of a mother's love and a medical breakthrough."

I will warn you now... How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is a truly dreadful album with no U2 classics on it (each U2 album usually has at least one classic track). Rattle and Hum isn't bad, it's just bloated and boring. All That You Can't Leave Behind is a decent album but is a bit straightforward for my liking. And as for No Line on the Horizon... It's a bit of a mixed bag. Some of their best, some of their worst. I still can't decide how to feel about the album as a whole, three years after first hearing it. It was a strange album to start with, that's for sure.

HTDAAB is not a dreadful album. For me it certainly contains two of their best ever songs. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own and especially City of Blinding Lights are classics amongst a lot of fans. City of Blinding Lights is just vintage U2 that stems from the very quality of their Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree era. It is a wonderful song.
Vertigo as a smash hit was brilliant when it was released in 2004 and even though my opinion of the song has cooled a lot since that year I still can't deny that it will get most people energised. It's far from a great album (A Man and A Woman, One Step Closer are poor efforts particularly) but it's an album that will have enough to hold the attention of newcomers to U2.

I honestly did not know that, either. Bono and Edge's voices can often sound eerily similar.
I also didn't know the story behind "Miracle Drug", either. That's pretty freaking inspirational.
I don't mind How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. I've already talked about how "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" means a lot to me, and "Vertigo" is just goofy fun (it seems people don't like it when U2 does goofy fun songs. "Vertigo", "Elevation", "Get On Your Boots"...sure they're not poetry or anything lyrically, but let the band have some fun for a few minutes. People criticize them all the time for being so serious and then get mad when they decide not to be). And I happen to like "A Man and a Woman" and "One Step Closer"-like the lyrics of the former and the quiet, haunting nature of the latter. Is it their best album? No. Is it my favorite album? No. But I like it. I can always find something to like about my favorite bands' works, though, so maybe I'm not the best person to come to for a true critque :p.
Glad you're enjoying what you're hearing so far, Fitz, and I do agree that "MLK" flows nicely into "Streets". I like people's lists of favorite '80s songs. Some of mine would be...gosh, let's see here: "Tomorrow", "I Will Follow", "New Year's Day", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "40" (LOVE "40"), "A Sort of Homecoming", "With or Without You", "Hawkmoon 269", "Angel of Harlem", "The Unforgettable Fire"...

Calling HTDAAB "a truly dreadful album" is a bit too extreme considering that it has won 8 Grammys, including Album of the Year.
That doesn't have to mean a thing, it won't make you like it, but surely the academy didn't go mad to give all those awards to a truly dreadful album.
It is bad to poison the mind of the young padawan. It needs to stay open and without prejudice. Do not listen to him Fitz, it's a good album.

BTW I watched PopMart and I didn't like it as much as ZOO TV. The stage was interesting but Bono was being too much of a dick. :D
I mean, they were all playing these characters, criticizing Wall Mart, McDonalds etc. but it's all too much. ZOO TV and MacPhisto were perfect.
U2 - Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Car (Live ZOO TV at Sydney) - YouTube
I like this song a lot. There are at least 3 different interpretations of the lyrics:
Daddy is the father of a spoiled brat, or a suga daddy
Daddy is God and the crashed car is you
Daddy is West Germany and the crashed car is East Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
And I like Lemon now! Weird lyrics there too.
PS But, for instance, I liked these performances from PopMart:

The first interpretation of that song's lyrics were the ones I always went with. But I like the other two, never thought of it that way. I think I like those options better :p.
Very strange song, that one. It's cool but it's very weird, too.
Glad you're getting into "Lemon" more, too! That's a cool song, and yes, also very odd.
I've never seen the Popmart DVD, so can't comment there. I do know I've heard that that tour had some brilliant moments and some moments of struggle-the whole Pop era was a very tough time for the band, it seems. Album came out before they felt it was ready, the tour started off a bit rough, sales were "eh" depending on where you lived...U2's biggest "flop" period, so to speak, I think.
Loved the performances from that show you shared, though. Gorgeous version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" from Edge, lovely to hear his take on the song. And "Please"-gah, I LOVE that song, that's one of my absolute favorite U2 songs, and that version was excellent.
"Soon" sounded really interesting! I agree, let's get some new music out here, people!
Nikola

Well you should watch it, especially considering that it's your favorite album. You don't have to buy the DVD, watch it while the internet is still free. :D
I think the third interpretation is the "right" one. The first one is the most literal, the third one fits best within the context of the album. The song's intro is from "Lenin's Favourite Songs" and the visuals in concert, the crashing Trabants, all fit. Daddy can also be the USSR.
And I am fascinated with Soon. I mean, obviously it's an unfinished song, but I love the direction. I hope that it's indicative of the new album and that they'll finish the song, it sounds like a perfect opener. When I heard this "strings song" intro to 360° I thought it's some classical piece or a Vanessa Mae song or sth.
Soon...
Sing yourself on down the street
Sing yourself right off your feet
Sing yourself away from victory and from defeat
Sing yourself with fife and drum
Sing yourself to overcome
The thought that someone's lost
And someone else has won
Soon...

Yeah I agree. His singing isn't as good on that show and overall it's nowhere near as epic a show as Zoo TV! Slane Castle though is incredible. Hard to separate Zoo TV and Slane Castle.
Glad you're starting to like Lemon! The song is about Bono's mother and how he viewed an old home video recording of her and how she wore a lemon coloured dress in the video. "She wore Lemon".... Not the first song written by Bono that is deeply personal which I think makes the song that extra bit special. Definitely in my top 3 all time favourite U2 songs. It is special!

LOL. I should. I'm not as up on my live U2 stuff as I should be-I have a few live DVDs here and there, but I don't have bootlegs or every last live DVD out there or whatnot. I'll watch the concert on YouTube at some point, and work on getting the DVD itself down the line, too.

I think that makes perfect sense. Like you said, it fits well within all the other political aspects of the music they were doing at that time, and the theme of the tour, and the overall look of the stage. That's one of the great things about their music, the interpretations can run from the superficial to the incredibly deep, and a listener can STILL relate to all of it no matter what interpretation they go with.
And I am fascinated with Soon. I mean, obviously it's an unfinished song, but I love the direction. Yeah, I was gonna say, it seemed awfully short, but if it's unfinished that would explain why :p. I'd be very interested to see them go in that direction with their music, it'd be a whole new style for them to explore and mess around with.

Yeah, that's also what I wanted to say - I think up to the point when he got pissed off at that guy who pointed a laser to his eyes and they gave him a different mic afterwords, the volume of his voice was very low, like you couldn't hear what he was singing in Mofo. But later on it got better, he turned down the attitude and the acoustic set was nice. But overall, the whole show doesn't have a good flow, it's kinda anticlimactic, although there are some good moments.
At first glance at the lyrics, I thought they were kinda pervy, about some girl. But then I read that it's actually about his mother, like Mofo and some other songs. Apparently he can't write a simple song, a ballad about her, it's always masked into a "dance" song. Perhaps it's too hard. But he wrote them for his father.
Edit: Actually, there is - Tomorrow.

And yesterday I watched 360° Live at the Rose Bowl and I loved it! Maybe not as much as ZOO TV but it was pretty flawless. I've watched parts of it before, but now I saw the whole show and I totally enjoyed it. They weren't upstaged by the stage which was very important. So far it's my second favorite show, and I think I'll watch Slane Castle next. ;)

It's definitely the most natural of all U2's dvds. Despite the scale of the show it somehow manages to be very intimate. I think that's the power of it being in their homeland and personal circumstances. Really special!

We went in and I started talking to The Edge (:awesome:) and he asked if I wanted to request a song. I asked for Van Diemen's Land and he said he had forgotten how to play it, so I had to go on a laptop and look up videos of it to remind him how :laugh3:

I will warn you now... How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is a truly dreadful album with no U2 classics on it (each U2 album usually has at least one classic track). Rattle and Hum isn't bad, it's just bloated and boring. All That You Can't Leave Behind is a decent album but is a bit straightforward for my liking. And as for No Line on the Horizon... It's a bit of a mixed bag. Some of their best, some of their worst. I still can't decide how to feel about the album as a whole, three years after first hearing it. It was a strange album to start with, that's for sure.
Having now given every U2 album a good listen, I actually think I like HTDAAB more than ATYCLB... The first 4 or 5 songs of the latter are great, but after that it becomes a bit of a snooze-fest. HTDAAB, however, is a lot more consistent in my opinion. It may not have any truly 'classic' U2 songs (COBL and SYCMIOYO being the exceptions) but most of the songs are at least a bit catchy or memorable, which can't be said for much of ATYCLB.

Vertigo is pure awesomeness, and the album isn't their best, but better than NLOTH for me.

ATYCanLB is pretty boring. but has some great songs like Kite, Peace on Earth, Beautiful Day, Elevation and New York
but it also has Stuck and In A Little While which makes those other songs worthless. my 2 least favorite U2 songs
HTDAAB is decent. it has my 5th favorite U2 song A Man and A Woman which is amazinly underrated. but also has classics like COBL, Sometimes, Love and Peace or Else, Original of the Species and Vertigo
but then it has All Because of You so eh
I really love No Line. Stand Up Comedy and Breathe are the two best on the album IMO. but MOS, Magnificent, NLOTH, Crazy, Cedars and Fez are all great
Boots is ok. but White as Snow is pretty bad
James.
26-04-2012, 09:47 PM
I like No Line as well :) My favourites from it are NLOTH, Magnificent and Unknown Caller.
I think now I've made my mind up about each one I would rank the albums in this order:
1. The Joshua Tree
2. Achtung Baby
3. The Unforgettable Fire
4. War
5. No Line On The Horizon
6. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
7. Boy
8. Zooropa
9. All That You Can't Leave Behind
10. Rattle & Hum
11. October
12. Pop
At least I think that's right

5. TUF
6. War
7. Zooropa
8. NLOTH

I was a PLEBA girl once, but I haven't been on there as much as I used to...especially after they started charging. Besides all my U2 friends are on Facebook now.
They don't charge unless you want premium features...
Yes, I'm hardly on there now. The U2 friends I have made from there I have met in real life and have them on fb as well. It is very cliquish (is that a word?) and not fun anymore.

Yeah...and those premium features used to be free. I only paid during the tour, but shortly after that Facebook picked up real quickly, and I quit payin'. And I know exactly what you mean about it not being fun anymore...actually I've run into some real jerks over there...and I have no time for that.

That is exactly why I came here. I was getting bugged so badly about liking Coldplay, to the point that people were posting negative comments on my fb. I don't need that. I notice that the premium features on Interference are free here, which is nice! Great to know there are some fellow U2 fans here, so hello!

It's incredible how people can't accept other people's music tastes. I love Coldplay and U2 equally. Both are similar (in the sense that both can make timeless stadium classics) but different in their own way. Apparently it's a sin in the music business to create music which 100,000 people can sing along to at one time but U2 and Coldplay prove that is just bollocks. No other band around can match these two in putting on a show.

U2 for me, was the first band I ever fell in love with, so that will never change, so no matter how much ALL of my friends don't like U2, I always will, which makes the music that much more special for me!

Yep besides Coldplay, Green Day, Muse and Oasis, U2 are next, then Snow Patrol!
This is from Wikipedia:
U2 has been another important influence on Martin both musically and politically,on whom he wrote for Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time", in the section on U2, saying: "I don't buy weekend tickets to Ireland and hang out in front of their gates, but U2 are the only band whose entire catalogue I know by heart. The first song on The Unforgettable Fire, "A Sort of Homecoming", I know backward and forward – it's so rousing, brilliant, and beautiful. It's one of the first songs I played to my unborn baby." Martin also comments on Bono's effect on his own charity and political involvement he is even known to joke with friends referring to himself as "Crono".
Its about Chris Martin's influences BTW. :P

And, also not to make U2 sound bad (I do like them) Bono called Chris Martin a W****r, and here also: Bono on Chris Martin: "[He's] a completely dysfunctional character and a cretin. But he happens to be a great melodist." (Radio 1, 2009) It must have been pretty hard on Chris, even though I'm sure Bono was joking about it, but, still, Bono is like Chris' idol!

No need to worry y'all...they are good friends. The whole thing was tongue and cheek. Bono was just trash talkin'. Chris' feelings were NOT hurt. Those two laughed hard after the media took it seriously. Shoot, even U2 let Coldplay borrow their 360 plane because Coldplay's quit on them.

Massive Bump!
Is anyone getting From The Ground Up (Music Edition)? It comes with a 15 track CD of songs from the 360 tour selected by the Edge and they're getting people to guess what songs will be on it. I thought it would be fun to try and guess the tracklist. The only known songs so far are Breathe, 40, New Year's Day, Vertigo, Electrical Storm and Get On Your Boots. NLOTH and Spanish Eyes are confirmed not to be on it, and none of the 'new' songs are on it. Also nothing that was on U22 will be on it either.
My guess:
1. Breathe
2. Get On Your Boots
3. I Will Follow
4. New Year's Day
5. Stuck in a Moment
6. In a Little While
7. Miss Sarajevo
8. Electrical Storm
9. Vertigo
10. I'll Go Crazy
11. Sunday Bloody Sunday
12. Pride
13. Scarlet
14. Hold Me, Thrill Me
15. 40

It shows the From The Ground Up book, the Edge's Picks CD and a few of the extras -- like the page-size band member prints. BK also emailed us the full tracklist for Edge's Picks, which hasn't been published anywhere to our knowledge:
1. Breathe - Stadio San Siro, Milan, 8th July 2009
2. I Will Follow - Stade Roi Baudouin, Brussels, 22nd Sept 2010
3. Get On Your Boots - Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, 20th Sept 2009
4. New Year's Day - Croke Park, Dublin, 27th July 2009
5. Electrical Storm - Stadio San Siro, Milan, 8th July 2009
6. Stuck in a Moment - Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, 11th May 2011
7. Your Blue Room - Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, 23rd Sept 2009
8. Vertigo - Subiaco Oval, Perth, 18th December 2010
9. Crazy Tonight - Stade De France, Paris, 11th July, 2009
10. Sunday Bloody Sunday - Vanderbilt Stadium, Nashville, 2nd July 2011
11. Scarlet - Vanderbilt Stadium, Nashville, 2nd July 2011
12. In A Little While - Estadio Morumbi, Sao Paulo, 9th April 2011
13. Miss Sarajevo - Estadio Unico De La Plata, Buenos Aires, 30th March 2011
14. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me - Estadio Nacional, Santiago, 25th March 2011
15. "40" - Magnetic Hill Music Festival, Moncton, 30 July 2011
If you get your copy soon, feel free to let us know on Twitter so we can give other fans an idea of how quickly the book and CD are shipping/arriving around the world. Big thanks to BK for letting us know today!

^^Well they need some time after dat tour but from what we've heard about the album they seem quite inspired. It's kinda confirmed for 2013. Can't wait!
^The Stones make money on former glory. When was the last time they had a "big album"? I like them but they keep putting out compilations. U2 are much more respectable in that matter, they still try to make adventurous records.

 This is true. The Stones are at least still performing even though they're in their late 60s, so hopefully U2 can also continue that long. (As long as the quality of their performances doesn't decrease of course.)

That's also true. They are not directly comparable since they're 20 years older.
This is what Bono said about that:
"We've had the best three weeks in the studio since 1979. I think they [the other band members] are very aware that U2 have to do something very special to have a reason to exist right now."
They're not afraid of retiring if they can't find something meaningful to say anymore.
PS They praised Foster The People this year, maybe they'll be inspired by them a bit?
U2 guitarist The Edge singled Torches out as one of his favorite records, calling it "a very interesting new album. Very 21st century pop, but it's beautifully made and thrilling. You see, we're always interested in the new thing..."
Prospector
23-12-2012, 03:46 PM
^ Foster The People :D, that would be an interesting direction, though I don't think they will go for a totally new direction at this point of their careers, they seem pretty confortable as the biggest band in the world. And the Rolling Stones were still making albums 20 years ago, so in the late 80s and early 90s they were pretty much where U2 are right now.
Nikola

^ (about the RS)
Who knows. Their albums of the same decade are similar but they tend to change their sound at the turn of a decade.
(This doesn't have to be a conscious decision, technology changes and that has an impact especially on pop music.)
They're working with Danger Mouse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danger_Mouse#Danger_Mouse_albums) so their new sound might be like some of the stuff he did with Gnarls Barkley, The Black Keys etc.

^ Interesting point (about the tech), also it's good that they are trying different people, we all know they aren't going anywhere if the keep coming back to Brian Eno, I love his work but I guess this team has alredy given what it could.

Yeah...not sure if it's true either. Bono could have been half kidding around during the interview...that's what I heard.
Don't believe anything until we officially see it.

One of my all time favourite U2 songs. U2 should dip back into their back catalogue more. Songs like that and The Unforgettable Fire really did suit the setup of 360 less so songs like that gash remix of Even Better Than The Real Thing (why did they need to change from the original?). Definitely there Glastonbury show from two years back could have benefited from songs like The Unforgettable Fire A Sort of Homecoming and New Years Day. Could have added a couple more acoustics in there like Wake Up Dead Man. It's absolutely criminal that they never play A Sort of Homecoming though. That is one of the most magical and spiritual songs I have ever heard. For me, that song defines U2 perfectly in my ears.
James.

I've been struggling to make a perfect U2 setlist for a while now, as their back catalogue is so full of classic songs it's just impossible to fit them all into a reasonable length setlist. So I came up with the idea to make two setlists for the two different 'eras' of U2's career. I'd like to know what people think of these?
1980-1990 U2:
I Will Follow
Gloria
A Sort of Homecoming
Pride (In the Name of Love)
New Year's Day
I Threw a Brick Through a Window
The Unforgettable Fire
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
One Tree Hill
Van Diemen's Land
Desire
Angel of Harlem
Bad
Sunday Bloody Sunday
Bullet the Blue Sky
Running to Stand Still
MLK
Where the Streets Have No Name
Drowning Man
All I Want Is You
The Electric Co.
With or Without You
Out of Control
40
1991-2009 U2:
Zoo Station
The Fly
Until the End of the World
Mysterious Ways
Beautiful Day
Elevation
Magnificent
Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own
Kite
Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
Staring at the Sun
Original of the Species
Zooropa
No Line on the Horizon
Unknown Caller
One
Walk On
Discotheque
City of Blinding Lights
Vertigo
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Lemon
Moment of Surrender
Love Is Blindness
