Cool, and then you will have heard / read about the first U2-concert there. Those going to both U2 concerts always have something to look forward to as U2 change their setlist with a couple of songs. That is so good.

How early you planning to line up? I imagine it's going to be the same at Etihad Stadium in Melb... good thing about going 2 nights is I will get it right the 2nd!
etihad is only 60 000 :P which why im surprised they didnt have it at the mcg.
i was thinking about going the 2nd night for the cheap seats but so many other shows have come up i opted against it.
i'll get there around 4pm-ish which might mean i wont get under the Claw but most certainly a good spot outside of that circle. sydney 2nd show only has the $300 and $250 seats remaining so you can almost call that one a sell out too.

I saw Bono before the Paris gig, a few weeks ago. The previous day he had an appointment with President Sarkozy. I've waited before the Elysée to try to take pictures. After waiting over 2 hours I took 2 pictures i've already put on here. This is the third pic that was taken by a guy standing next to me. Actually we swap pictures by email. As a result he's got 3 pictures, so have I. :)

I heard the new song Mercy for the first time. Hopefully, it will be on their next album, which is rumoured to came out next year!:)

I was in Rome too, after seeing them on the first European date it was awesome to be on the very last as well.
I freaked out when they played Mercy, I loved that song since it first leaked, and even tough I knew they had played it in the previous gigs, I still hadn't heard the "new" revisited version, which I really like (but I like the original more).
It was a very emotional gig for us italian fans, they really have a special place here and we wanted them to know :nice:

U2 are set to release a new album in "early 2011", according to their manager Paul McGuinness.
McGuinness revealed that the follow-up to 2009's 'No Line On The Horizon', which is provisionally titled 'Songs Of Ascent', would arrive before the band's North American tour in May.
"I would expect a new U2 album sooner than anybody thinks," he told the Irish Times. "I would guess early 2011 before the next leg of the American tour, which starts in May."
hope this is true.

U2 recruit Danger Mouse to produce new album
Band also reveal plans to record a 'club' LP and concept album based on their 'Spider-Man' musical
U2 frontman Bono has revealed that Danger Mouse is working on their forthcoming album.
The record, which is tentatively titled 'Songs Of Ascent' and is due out next year according to the band's manager Paul McGuinness , has been produced by the Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells man, otherwise known as Brian Burton.
"We have about 12 songs with him," Bono told Theage.com. "At the moment that looks like the album we will put out next, because it's just happening so easily."
The singer also revealed that the band are currently working on two other albums, the first of which is a "club" record featuring Lady Gaga collaborator RedOne, Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am and David Guetta.
"U2's remixes in the 1990s were a real treasure," he said. "So we wanted to make a club sounding record. We have a pile of songs."
The band are also hoping to make a concept album based on songs Bono and guitarist The Edge have written for their Spider-Man musical, which opens on Broadway next month.
"We haven't convinced the rest of the band to do that yet," added the singer. "[Drummer] Larry [Mullen Jr] definitely has a raised eyebrow."

Working with Danger Mouse and on a club record. Hard for me to say anything because I haven't heard it yet, but I can't say I'm crazy about the idea.
I may be in the minority, but I wouldn't mind if U2 made albums like ATYCLB and HTDAAB for the rest of their career. They really have nothing left to prove. If they were to go in any direction, I would prefer it to be a more somber or dark album. Working with flashy producers and pop stars doesn't sound right for a group of aging rock stars.
I love Larry. He always tries to put the brakes on Bono's crazy ideas. I always get the feeling that Larry is telling Bono, "Can't we just be a rock band."

I am crazy about the idea. Well the only reason I am okay with it is because they'll be coming out with Songs of Ascent first.
But it is true, in the 90s U2 had some really great dance remix tracks. Solome, Even Better The The Real Thing, Discotheque, Lemon, Lady With the Spinning Head all had some of the best remix treatments of songs I have ever listened too. So if they could tap into that feeling and vibe I would be okay with it.
Also If I Don't Go Crazy I'll Go Crazy Tonight was 100000 times better with the remix version they performed live than the studio version.
So I have hope.

Bono was in Sydney on the weekend. he met with ex-PM of aus on saturday to talk aid and then spent most of his saturday night waiting in line to get a table at one of our more exclusive restaurants. then on sunday he had a seafood lunch with The Edge then in the evening he turned the Sydney Opera House red. pretty surprising he has spent so much time on the move while he has been here cos the weather has been horrible over the weekend.

I'm really digging this clip of Ultraviolet. Specifically, I think Bono sounds great. He sometimes has a tendency to "talk" the lyrics. However, when he's on, he can still belt it out. If Bono's going good, he sings with so much passion - I love it.

Wow. What an unbelievable couple of nights this week have offered. Firstly, U2's show on Wednesday night and their subsequent first show in Australia since 2007 was brilliant. We got there at 6:30pm and it was quite full already so we stood just outside of the claw. Decent enough to catch a glimpse of the band on the stage, plus the full cinematics of the big 360-degree screen (which in itself is spectacular).
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs564.ash2/148654_476477562384_586672384_6163055_7575582_n.jp g
What performers. It poured the entire day in Melbourne on Wednesday but it cleared just as the gates opened, and stayed fine the whole night. More proof that Bono IS god, or at least one of his disciples! The setlist was spot on, except for a number of exceptions. Crowd was responsive, but not fantastic which I could see Bono getting a little upset with. But boy were things different the second night...
On Friday for the second show we decided to go for it, and get there early. We lined up outside at 3pm, and gates opened at 5:30pm. It was totally worth it even though we got burnt in the process - but the atmosphere lining up was great, we chatted with the people around us. Big cheers as the gates opened and we went in. To our amazement, there were quite a few people already in front of us in line but we managed to get into the inner circle and snatch a spot third row right in front of the stage where I knew The Edge was going to spend the entire night! So glad I went the first night to sus things out. The waiting went quickly, and Jay-Z was on soon enough.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs781.snc4/66147_477564222384_586672384_6179739_3164176_n.jpg
What a born performer. An odd choice for support, but fantastic in my mind. Really got the crowd in an excited and positive mood. Played a few songs I recognised, and pretty much went through his greatest hits. Empire State Of Mind got as good a reaction as U2's songs later in the night. It really is a monster track.
As night fell and darkness surrounded the stadium, U2 came out. All class with the entrance, of course, to Return of the Stingray Guitar. There were a few changes to the setlist from Wednesday, they played New Year's Day instead of I Will Follow, Ultra violet instead of Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me in the encore but also PRIDE WAS PLAYED!!! So happy about that, they played a brand new unreleased song on Wednesday night which wasn't as good as Pride, obviously. The acoustic of Stuck In a Moment was magical, as well as when Bono played One on guitar. Songs that went absolutely OFF (it was insane how mental the crowd went) included Elevation, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Vertigo and Streets. Seriously, I will never forget Vertigo. One word = EPIC.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1231.snc4/156361_477566137384_586672384_6179785_1175098_n.jp g
Overall the night was so memorable. These shows were my first stadium experiences, and I was impressed. The crowd was way more receptive on the second night, probably because it was a Friday night and they were well up for it. I went with my Irish flag (being 1/4 Irish) and got looks and points from Bono and The Edge! Totally worth it! Pretty much ruined my body and couldn't get out of bed the next morning I was that sore. But unforgettable. Going to have to get the Live at the Rose Bowl DVD just to relive the moments. I came out of the concerts saying "This is one of the things people MUST do in their lives".

+1 I've watched that thing countless times.
I would say the performance of With or Without You from that night is probably my favorite music clip of all time. To me, it's everything music is supposed to be. I could list several moments during that performance that give me goosebumps. The connection with the girl as she mouths the lyrics, the thumping baseline, the celestial lighting, the Edge's infinity guitar and delays, the heart stage glow during the "Ooohhh," Bono's unmatched confidence, the hands going up in the air as Bono swings the mic toward the sky during the second "Ooohhh" - it's just perfect to me.

I wish Hamish Hamilton was still doing their DVDs. He perfectly captured how emotionally and physically involved the crowd is during a U2 show. I'm from Southern California, and I'm used to people watching concerts with their hands in their pockets (slight exaggeration). When I saw U2 for the first time, I couldn't believe how much the fans were into it. I've never seen anything like it before or since.

Man both of those are great.
The album version of New York does not do it justice at all. My favourite is to just turn out the lights in the basement and watch the walls flash during New York.
And the whole Stay to Bad to 40 to Streets. Just wow. I can't even put into words how much that string of songs moves me.
And totally agree about Hamilton, he definitely did a much better job than the directors of the last few dvds. I think U2 still puts out the best live DVDs consistently. They are definitely worth the money and make most DVDs kind of pale in comparison.

^ I prefer the Boston Elevation DVD, but the Chicago Vertigo DVD is a close second. The stage setup and lighting for both of those show, coupled with the fact that it was in an arena setting, were just perfect. Hamish Hamilton does an excellent job of filming in a way that makes you feel as if you were at the concert. I don't know enough about film to specify why; all I know is how I feel when I watch it. Rose Bowl DVD had too many goofy special effects.

no offense mate but american crowds have nothing on south american crowds and a big part of the appeal of that film was the incredible energy that the argentinian crowd had and worked really really well in 3D.

ok as U2's australian tour comes to an end tonight in Perth i think ive delayed this for too long. so heres my review of their 2 night stay in sydney last week.
Night 1
well i rocked up at about 6-30pm met up with friends and headed straight into the stadium. i had a pretty good idea of what to expect when i walked in but the first time i saw the Claw i was blown away, it was much much bigger than i expected and possessed an incredible presence in an otherwise massive stadium. Jay-z strolled on stage to a fairly noisy reception after 7pm and tore into his set straight away. he gave us most of his big songs like Run this town. Big Pimpin, encore and so on but his great performance wasnt what i took away from the set. i now have a new found respect for the man. he sells out stadiums in the US, headlined glasto but he still has the humility to come down to australia (a market he has never truly broken) and play to a near empty stadium to people who dont enjoy that brand of music let alone his music during broad daylight and he did it all with a great big smile on his face. with that sort of attitude towards performing im not at all surprised he has been so incredibly successful.
now moving on to U2. i really enjoyed how they sort of strutted around the stage for a few minutes and got the crowd pumped before launching into the first song which just happened to be Beautiful Day. they then did I Will Follow to perfection. by the time they go to Elevation about 30mins into the show Bono's body language was starting to show that he was a little disappointed at the lack of crowd participation, at one point commenting "does this feel like a Monday night?" and he was completely right. i couldnt believe that the opening riffs to beautiful day and mysterious ways were met with muted responses, nobody chanted the opening bits of Elevation and basically every new song just fell flat.
the setlist was brilliant in my opinion with a healthy chunk of All That You Cant.... played and Bad mixed in with a few INXS classics. on the other hand the sound was atrocious but to no fault of the band, the stadium just isnt made for live music. like i said before the crowd was shit making it really hard for the band. but Bono and The Edge gave us everything they had and i really appreciated that. im not sure if i can say it is easily the best show ive ever seen but it was bloody good.
Night 2
i worked the merch and program stands from 4 to 9 at this show. after cashing up and getting my all access wristband i went and found the best seat i possibly could. at that point they had already played New Years Day and Beautiful Day with Sgt Peppers outro. the setlist was fairly predictable until Bono launched into a monologue about their Lovetown tour and then got into All I Want Is You which made my jaw drop, it is easily one of my all time favourite songs and i never expected them to play it in sydney, i later found out that was the first time they had played it on this tour. they went onto play Pride and Love Rescue Me from the rattle & hum album. the rest of the set was quite predictable aside from Ultra Violet. sitting in my $200 dollar seat i realised why the seated tickets were so much more expensive than the pit tickets, the experience was far more enjoyable from the stands than in the pit. standing on the floor i felt some what distant from the spaceship/stage but in my seat i could appreciate everything that was happening in front of me.
sadly, ticket sales for the 2nd night were extremely poor, my supervisor told me in the morning that they were expecting less than 40 000 down from close to 80 000 the night before. but through the day i heard a lot of talk about people having the promoters coming in to their workplace and handing out 50 -100 free tickets at a time. so by the time U2 started the stadium was near capacity.
overall it was a wonderful experience and i feel as though i was a part of this 360 tour in some way through working the merch stands. at the end of the 2nd night i really did not want to leave my seat and felt a sense of sadness go through me knowing that it will be a long time before i see another show this huge.

U2 manager Paul McGuinness has confirmed that the new U2 record, their 13th studio album, will be released in May of 2011. Speaking at the Midem music conference in Cannes, France on February 1st 2011, McGuinness spoke about the release date and hinted at how recording sessions have gone. Paul McGuinness is often seen as the fifth member of the Irish rock band, having been teir manager since the band formed more than twenty years ago.
The exact release date of the album has not been confirmed, at the time of writing, with McGuinness only stating that it would be during the month of May. Curiously though, Amazon.com have the new album listed for release on the 27th of May 2011. The working title for the album is Songs of Ascent, a title that was thought to be the name of the album on release. However, McGuinness stated in Cannes that this is unlikely to be the final name for the record, according to AtU2.com.
The record will is being produced by Dangermouse. McGuinness also stated that the songs have nearly all been completed. Now Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr and Adam Clayton are applying the final touches to the tracks in their studio in Southern France. By U2 standards, the previous album, No Line on the Horizon achieved low sales figures. According to United World Chart, the 2004 release, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb more than doubled the sales figures of the last album.
The tour, huge in scope and the number of people that the Irish rockers will have played to, began in Barcelona in 2009 with two dates at Camp Nou. By the tour´s end, the group will have played in dozens of cities all over the world, in Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and North America. According to the Billboard Touring Award, 360 was the highest grossing tour worldwide in 2009 and in 2010. The remaining dates of the tour will see U2 play in cities including Johannesburg, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and cities in the United States and Canada. Over the course of the tour global acts such as Jay-Z, Snow Patrol, Kasabian, the Fray and One Republic have played as guests of the band. The band will close the tour on 30 July in Canada, playing at Moncton with The Arcade Fire providing support.
The band will undoubtedly play the new album on the rest of the tour. It is one of the most anticipated music releases of the year.

This is great news. I actually liked NLOTH, but it never rose to the level of many of my other favorite U2 albums. I still think the title track is fantastic.

I really liked it as well and prefer it to their previous two albums. But unlike you I thought the title track was one of the weaker songs on the album. The likes of Unknown Caller , Breathe and Fez - Being Born I loved.

I'd like U2 to return to the Joshua Tree "soul" they had - songs like Running To Stand Still / Red Hill Mining Town - I want them to write songs from their hearts, rather than throw away pop songs to get on Radio One (Elevation / Get On Yer Boots) - think they need to aim for the mass appeal of the Radio Two crowd now, rather than trying to be relevant to under 24s like they've consistently done until NLOTH.. Think Coldplay proved this with Viva La Vida.

I loved NLOTH, but it really wasn't anything like the old sound. I'd love if they could get back to that.

Did you listen to Cedars of Lebanon? Or Breathe? Moment of Surrender? Lots of soul on those tracks.
People need to shut up about their Joshua Tree nostalgia. That was over 20 years ago, ain't gonna happen again.

Yes of course, but it was all a bit like they were trying too hard. I don't know. I can't put my finger on it. Moment Of Surrender is good / great admittedly, as is Magnificent. Oh and I now like the title track No Line On The Horizon. But that's about it.

BONO / BOER SONG
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12444061
13 February 2011 Last updated at 15:59 GMT
U2's BONO CRITICISED FOR ENDORSING SHOOT THE BOER SONG
The Irish pop star Bono has been criticised for apparently endorsing a song which includes the lyric: "Shoot the Boer".
The U2 frontman said the song, which was sung during the fight against apartheid, had its place, like music supporting the Irish Republican Army.
His comments came at the start of U2's tour of South Africa.
But callers to local radio stations said the song was designed to stir up racial hatred.
"That's hate speech. They don't know our history at all," said one caller to a South African radio talk show.
The song has been at the centre of a political storm in South Africa, with the controversial leader of South Africa's youth league, Julius Malema, locked in a legal battle with a white lobby group over whether it should be banned as hate speech.
Sometimes used as a derogatory term for white people, Boer is an Afrikaans word for farmer.
'Folk music'
In an interview with the South African Sunday Times, Bono said: "When I was a kid and I'd sing songs I remember my uncles singing... rebel songs about the early days of the Irish Republican Army."
He went on to sing a song whose lyrics spoke of carrying guns and readying them for action.
"We sang this and it's fair to say it's folk music," he told the newspaper.
But he said such songs should not be sung in the wrong context.
"Would you want to sing that in a certain community? It's pretty dumb," he said.
"It's about where and when you sing those songs. There's a rule for that kind of music."
Callers to local radio stations described the song as an example of hate speech.
South Africa's highest court is currently considering whether the song violates the rights of Afrikaners.
Since apartheid was banned in 1994, more than 3,000 white farmers have been murdered.
A committee of inquiry in 2003 found that only 2% of farm attacks had a political or racial motive, although critics said this figure was far too low.
It was into this political minefield that Bono has wandered, says BBC Africa analyst Martin Plaut, apparently unaware of the depth of feeling his remarks would stir up.
BBC News website readers from around the world have been sharing their thoughts on Bono's remarks:
I think Bono is right when he says about when and why and what context the song was written. It is very ignorant to say that it was made intentionally with hate in mind considering the history and background of U2. It is mentioned above that Bono and U2 do not know about South Africa history but I don't think the people that complain know where U2 come from either. David E, Salt Lake City, Utah, US
Bono instead of talking rubbish check your facts - I ashamed of you as an Irishman. I, along with thousands of true fans who started a call to bring you to Durban, will never support you or any of your music again. A bad move on your part. Avril Kotze, Durban, South Africa
This is the same as endorsing any other derogatory racist name that has been used in the past. Is this what U2 support, just because it is historical? What other racist names do they endorse and support? Is this a publicity stunt? If so, it is in its lowest form. Colin Money, Basingstoke, UK
We've heard quite enough from pretentious pop stars and this dangerous indiscretion illustrates how pathetically clueless these people are. Jack Gunter, La Manga, Spain
If his endorsement of this song leads to one more farmer's death, it would have undone all the good he has done over the years. Bono, you should come and live in the real South Africa, and not in your ivory towers and learn what life is like for ordinary South Africans, before you make comments like that. Shame on you Bono. Steve Newby, Cape Town, South Africa
It's fair to say Bono has stepped into a mess here and would have been better served by hiring some PR people who should have told him what to steer clear of during their tour in South Africa. Although Bono likes to think of himself as liberal-minded and politically conscious, he will make no friends and quite a few enemies trying to court favour with certain sections of the community. South African politics and society are still pretty polarised and it's fair to say in-depth reporting on issues does not often make its way to Europe. Simon O, Napier, South Africa
He is known for his self-righteous help to Africa which has often done more harm than good. He is talking about something of which he knows nothing at all, which is not at all unusual for him. It is amazing how drugs, sex and rock and roll make you a guru worth listening to. Jan du Plessis, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
This is a sheer idiocy on the part of a man who should know better. His attitude in the context of the difficulties faced by the Irish displays a sorry intellect. Ian King, Pretoria, South Africa
Really fed up with those singers who think of themselves as politicians. First, it's a depravation of music, second they don't know a thing about the situations they sing about. Chris, Paris, France
Having grown up on a cattle ranch in South Africa, I am aware of the atrocious behaviour of many Boer farmers towards their black farm workers. With that said, for Bono to include a song such as Shoot The Boer during his tour in Africa, it can only inflame the tenuous attitude between white and black citizens, that prevails to this day. Bono and U2 have helped ameliorate situations all over the world but this is a poor decision on his behalf. Michael Lamb, Warwick, US

While that's where the Gaga talk began and ended, the super-producer was more forthcoming with details about working with rock icons U2 on their next album. "I'm working with U2 and Bono and them. I'm a guitar player. I'm a musician," he explained. "A lot of people think RedOne is a synth guy, but I'm a guitar player, I'm a singer and all of that."
RedOne said that while the band's next album will sound distinctly U2, he revealed that he and the guys are also putting a new-millennium spin on the age-old formula. "I love producing. I love doing different styles, and with U2, it was like going back to when I was in a band, a rock band. The process is very special," he said. "It's a very unique process. It's futuristic, but it's still U2. U2 is U2."
Interview producer redone had a few days ago. He talked about new gagas single and working with U2
DEAD at people believing or thinking u2 might go back to Joshua days. They are working with jennifer Lopez , lady gagas producer LOL

I stuck on the remastered Unforgettable Fire again recently. What an absolutely beautiful creation and U2s most important album I feel which spurned The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. The Joshua Tree is like the clean cut, incredibly successful daughter of The Unforgettable Fire. Achtung Baby meanwhile is the bastard lovechild of The Unforgettable Fire!

could you explain that? i would've thought Achtung baby would be the rebel in the family. the child you want to go to law school or med school but they end up becoming a graffiti artist instead.

I can't remember who it was but some band tweeted last year that they were recording next door to where people were remastering the album. I think we could expect one in November this year to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the release. I bought The Unforgettable Fire remastered and it was just an incredible remastering of an incredible album. If Achtung Baby is done like that then it is going to be incredible. Hopefully get a deluxe edition as well. A new album and a remastered of probably their greatest would make a fine year for U2 fans!

I've got the remasters for both Joshua and Unforgettable - worth every penny. Keep in mind though that with those two records, that's the first time i've ever actually owned a copy and listened to them from start to finish, so the whole package (not just the b-sides) was a whole new experience for me. I've owned Acthung for a while so I hope the remaster gets the same treatment in terms of the added content (live, b-sides, demos, out takes etc...).

I'd expect a few good live tracks from ZooTV could be used

I can't remember who it was but some band tweeted last year that they were recording next door to where people were remastering the album. I think we could expect one in November this year to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the release. I bought The Unforgettable Fire remastered and it was just an incredible remastering of an incredible album. If Achtung Baby is done like that then it is going to be incredible. Hopefully get a deluxe edition as well. A new album and a remastered of probably their greatest would make a fine year for U2 fans!
Amen to that!!

So U2 is playing in a city near me in May, and I don't have tickets.
The Fray is opening so I realllly want to go!
My aunt and uncle had tickets but recently separated...so I'm kind of wondering who is taking the tickets, and who will get the extra.....
That sounds really selfish of me though. :shame:

don't quite agree with you on the intimate feeling. it was after all in front of 80 000 people. i think the Boston dvd is the closest they've gotten to that on recent dvds. but theres nothing like a home turf gig.
really hope they one day release U2 3D on dvd with 3D capabilities.

Not in terms of size of crowd but in terms of it being a very personal experience for the band having recorded The Unforgettable Fire in Slane and with Bono's dad's funeral being on the same day as well as Ireland reaching the 2002 World Cup on that day. There seemed to be a real close "bond" between Bono and the audience that night. That's how I feel it's intimate.

its a real tragedy what has become of the slane castle concert. since 2004 there has only been 2 real slane concerts, oasis and rolling stones. it will be good to see elbow and kings of leon play the venue this year and hopefully start a run of consistent events at the legendary site.

Rockers U2 have promised they will pull out all the stops when they take to the stage at Glastonbury this summer.
Bass guitar player Adam Clayton told Q magazine that the group's headline performance will be show stopping
He said: "It's very un-Glastonbury to have a big production, but we will be sneaking a few things in through the back gate which will hopefully make the experience a little more like Glastonbury on steroids.
"We're stretching the levels of what can be done. We hope to create a mind blowing experience that reacts well with all the other substances involved."
The rocker also hinted the group's set for the British festival will include hits from their celebrated 1991 album 'Achtung Baby' album, in honour of its 20th anniversary.
He added: "We want to go back to our 90s work that plays into a certain kind of psychedelia and do something tailored around that, from the Zoo TV to PopMart. This is the 20th anniversary of 'Achtung Baby' so there's a nice connection there and we thought we should mark that."
U2 headline Glastonbury's Pyramid stage on Friday June 24. The festival, which runs until June 26, will also see headline sets from Coldplay and Beyonce Knowles.

If Bono needed a ride, would you give him one?
Edmonton Oilers Gilbert Brule did, during a rainstorm (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/nhl/2011-06-02-gilbert-brule-bono_N.htm) Tuesday in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The U2 frontman and his assistant were walking in West Vancouver on Tuesday when they got caught in the rain. Brule and his girlfriend, Kelsey Nichols, were driving to a park to walk Bella, their German shepherd.
Nichols, who was driving, didn't believe Brule at first when he spotted Bono by the side of the road, so she kept driving. The couple went a short distance until Brule convinced Nichols to turn around. Eventually, she agreed.
They gave Bono a lift. And Bono gave them tickets and backstage passes to his show Wednesday night in Edmonton, which they then flew to see.
"We go to walk our dog and Bono ends up in our car," Brule told the Edmonton Journal. (http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/Oiler+Brule+gave+lift+hitchhiking+Bono/4877705/story.html)

Bono facing protest at Glastonbury for avoiding tax
He is the rock legend dubbed 'Saint Bono' for his long-running campaign against global poverty.
But when Bono's band U2 perform at Glastonbury later this month, protesters are planning to accuse them of avoiding taxes which could have helped exactly the sort of people the singer cares about so dearly.
Members of activist group Art Uncut will hoist a massive inflatable sign with the message 'Bono Pay Up' spelt out in lights during the Irish band's headline performance.
They will also parade bundles of oversized fake cash in front of the singer.
The protest has been provoked by U2's decision to move their multi-million-pound music and publishing business away from Ireland - thus allegedly avoiding taxes on record sales.
A spokesman for Art Uncut, an off-shoot of controversial group UK Uncut, said the protest would not be violent or disrupt U2's set - but would be 'highly visible'.
He said: 'Bono claims to care about the developing world, but U2 greedily indulges in the very kind of tax avoidance that is crippling poor nations.
'We will be showing the very real impact of U2's tax avoidance on hospitals and schools in Ireland. Anyone watching will be made very aware that Bono needs to pay up.' Bono has previously been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and granted an honorary knighthood by the Queen in recognition of his charity work and activism.
The U2 frontman regularly meets political leaders to lobby on behalf of developing nations and has visited countries including Ethiopia and Mexico to try to improve the lives of the world's poor.
But U2 sparked criticism in 2006 by shifting part of their business affairs from Ireland to the Netherlands after a cap on generous tax breaks for artists in their home country.
At the time, Irish politicians branded U2's move a cynical ploy, leading to accusations that, while the band were urging the Government to give more money to relieve poverty, they were denying it the funds to do so.
Last year, U2 members were the highest-earning musicians in the world, raking in approximately £80m.
Protesters also aim to draw attention to what they say is the 'bigger picture' of the impact of tax avoidance on Ireland's economy. They plan to float an oversized bundle of fake cash across the crowd, from an Irish tricolour on one side of the spectators to a Dutch flag on the other, during the band's set at the rock festival in Somerset on June 24.
Tax expert and anti-poverty campaigner Richard Murphy said: 'If Bono thinks he is just like any other Irishman, he should pay his taxes like everyone else. That is the only way for Ireland to break out of the mess it is in.' A spokesman for U2, who are on tour in Vancouver, was unavailable for comment yesterday and Glastonbury organisers also declined to comment.
The band's manager, Paul McGuinness, has previously claimed: 'U2 is a global business and pays taxes globally...at least 95% of U2's business takes place outside of Ireland and as a result the band pays many different kinds of taxes all over the world.' Bono has been reluctant to explain the tax strategy, but the band's guitarist The Edge has admitted: 'Of course we want to be taxefficient - who doesn't?' Art Uncut's plans follow a wave of protests against wealthy Britons who are believed to be using tax-avoidance strategies as Britain struggles to pay off its huge budget deficit.
Philip Green's Topshop, Boots and Fortnum and Mason have all been targeted by campaigners recently. U2 pulled out of last year's Glastonbury Festival after Bono hurt his back. This year they will join billtoppers Beyonce and Coldplay.

This is a mixed bag. Anyone with common sense tries to do business in a way that keeps them from paying more taxes than is necessary. Anyone who says otherwise is not being realistic. However, with that said, Bono is not just "anyone". Is it a double standard - yes. Is it fair - I don't know.

Another band I'm a fan of, despite not being all that great since the ZooTV Tour had finished... They had too much to live up to I think and just couldn't hack it. No band really could live up to that though I reckon. They still have it as a live act and have made the odd really good song, but in my eyes their only good album since Zooropa was ATYCLB

A lot think that way but I'm not a massive fan of ATYCLB. I actually prefer How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb but I think No Line On The Horizon is better than both. That was their best since Zooropa in my opinion.

I'm doubting whether we'll see any release from U2 this year. They've been working on a few records apparently. A dance/club sounding record (!) as well as Songs of Ascent and possibly a rockier sounding one. I'm thinking they've just lumped it all together. And I don't know what has come from the Dangermouse sessions either.

Here you go:
U2 have delayed plans to release a new album in 2011, and tell Rolling Stone their next studio album probably won't be released until 2012. The band has been working regularly on new material during their extensive U2 360 tour but Adam Clayton says, "We had to have a meeting and look at the schedule to see if we could pick up any extra time to work on it and we just realized that we couldn't. To be honest, everyone was a bit gutted. But it was the only sensible decision." U2 will return to the studio later this year and revisit material recorded with producer Danger Mouse, while scrapping their work with Lady Gaga's producer RedOne. Manager Paul McGuinness also revealed that U2 plan to "recycle" the pieces of their giant "claw" stage as permanent event spaces.
