That's good to hear. Me and about 6 other people from work have tickets to the Anaheim show. We can deal with it either way, but we need to plan.

It's amazing how many people have a stake in one man's back - fans, crew, arena workers, etc. Also, it's crazy how much money is riding on the health of bono's back. If my back gets hurt, no one really gives a shit, and it doesn't really cost anyone money.

Rumours that Dizzee Rascasl is being lined up to replace U2 if Bono doesn't recover in time..... please Bono get that back working again. Heck I'd rather see you in a wheelchair performing at Glastonbury - just anything to stop that talentless **** from getting the headline spot.

They better get to releasing some type of news ASAP. As far as I can tell, no one even knows the exact nature of the injury other than its his back. What the hell does that mean? Some people in the U2 camp better start talking.

Speaking at the LMU University Hospital in Munich, Paul McGuinness has confirmed the postponement of 16 shows on the U2360° Tour from Salt Lake City on June 3rd, through to New Jersey's Meadowlands Stadium on July 19th. Tour Promoters Live Nation are now rescheduling those dates.

Denise

Ouch, i'm really sorry for everyone who was planning to go see them in their US leg, I know what it means to get your show postponed (I'm a "victim" of Coldplay's Tampa cancellation, just few hours before boarding the plane to Tampa, and at the other side of the world from home), hope everyone will make the rescheduled shows.

They added this news as well on u2.com
"Tour promoters Live Nation have confirmed that the 16 U2360° shows from Salt Lake City on June 3rd, through to New Jersey's Meadowlands Stadium on July 19th, will be rescheduled for 2011.
U2 tour producer/promoter Arthur Fogel, CEO of Live Nation Global Touring, said, 'Although we understand the disappointment to U2 fans, first and foremost comes the recovery of Bono.'
Additional details on rescheduled dates will follow shortly and fans are encouraged to hold on to their tickets. We'll have all the information on U2.com as soon as it's confirmed."

So this means right now Turin is the first show...hopefully, haven't booked the hotel yet, guess I will wait a little bit more :\

Damn...cancellation of the first few dates wasn't surprising, but everything NA plus Glasto? I really hope that means an effective recovery for Bono, at any rate. A delay until 2011 unfortunately makes sense thanks to sports schedules at each of the venues, meaning that I'll have had my tickets for well over a year by that point. :laugh3:

I'm over my disappointment now, but I'm sure my parents will be pretty upset, seeing as how they scheduled their three-week vacation around this (since I was to go to the concert with my family).

Guess I should find a new concert to go to in the meantime...

Gutted. The only thing that will salvage this is if Coldplay get headline and I'm not even sure if I or any other Coldplay fan really need that that as it'd be better for them to appear next year what with a new album.

U2 CANCEL GLASTONBURY AND US TOUR AFTER BONO's INJURY

U2 have pulled out of the Glastonbury Festival and postponed their US tour after Bono had emergency surgery to save him from possible paralysis.

The singer, 50, had a back operation on Friday after suffering an injury while training in preparation for the tour.

Neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn said: "The surgery was the only course of treatment for full recovery and to avoid further paralysis."

Bono, who must recuperate for the next two months, said he was "heartbroken".

They were due to headline Glastonbury on 25 June, in the middle of their 16-date North American tour, which was booked for June and July.

Prof Tonn told the Reuters news agency Bono had been "in severe pain with partial paralysis of the lower leg".

The frontman is "now much better with complete recovery of his motor-deficit", he continued.

"His prognosis is excellent but to obtain a sustainable result he must now enter a period of rehabilitation."

Dr Muller Wohlfahrt, who also treated the star in Munich, Germany, explained: "Bono suffered severe compression of the sciatic nerve.

"On review of his MRI scan, I realised there was a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc, and that conservative treatment would not suffice.

"We are treating Bono as we would treat any of our athletes and, while the surgery has gone very well, the coming weeks are crucial for a return to full health."

His rehabilitation will begin in the next few days, with the intensity increasing over the next eight weeks.

The band's manager Paul McGuinness said the group were "devastated" at postponing the concerts.

"For a performer who lives to be on stage, this is more than a blow," he said.
"His concerns about more than a million ticket buyers whose plans have been turned upside down, we all share, but the most important thing right now is that Bono makes a full recovery."

Glastonbury had been attempting to book U2 for many years and their appearance was expected to be a highlight of the event's 40th anniversary.
The band said they had written a new song for the occasion.

"I'm heartbroken," he said. "We really wanted to be there to do something really special."

Bono phoned festival organiser Michael Eavis on Tuesday morning to break the news.

Mr Eavis said: "It was obvious from our telephone conversation that U2 are hugely disappointed. Clearly they were looking forward to playing the Pyramid Stage as much as we were looking forward to watching them."

'Best wishes'

He declined to comment on a possible replacement. "Instead, we would simply like to send Bono our very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery," Mr Eavis added.

Dizzee Rascal, who is below U2 on the Pyramid Stage bill on Friday 25 June, could now take the headline slot. Festival favourites Coldplay have also been mentioned as possible replacements.

The festival has had to cope with headliners pulling out in the past.
In 1995, The Stone Roses cancelled when guitarist John Squire broke his collarbone in a cycling accident. Pulp were brought in as last-minute replacements.

In 2005, Kylie Minogue withdrew following her diagnosis with breast cancer. Basement Jaxx were promoted to fill in.

U2's North American dates will be rescheduled.

Their 360 Degree tour earned the band about $109m (£75.3m) in 2009, making it the most profitable tour of the year, according to Billboard magazine.
-----------------

I WISH BONO A FULL AND SPEEDY RECOVERY! :fingers crossed:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT from THE CHURCH OF CHRIS MARTIN:

"We decry the fact that Coldplay has not taken the opportunity to return the favor U2 had shown them last summer when the Irish group lent Coldplay the 360 Tour Jet when C/P's own wheels conked out on them in Scandinavia.

Glasto's organzier got everyone in a tizzy when he proclaimed that "an English band" would be signed to pick up U2's slack on the Pyramid Stage. Everyone just-hopefully-assumed it would be our Marvelous 4! Not so!

I am of the understanding that C/P has already committed to Glasto 2011 and will be needing to promote their new "striped-down music that may suck," which will be out then, but this Glasto teasing has left The Church of Chris Martin heart-broken and annoyed.

I hereby pronounce a WRIT of DISPLEASURE with Coldplay's decision to pass on Glasto this year! They have sent our hearts souring on numerous occasions and one can only dream and hope that they would SAVE THE DAY at Glasto! The Church of Chris Martin would like to add that any appearance by Coldplay ANYWHERE is a divine thing and to thank C/P for the joy and solace they bring to a sinful world!" Greetings to our coldplaying.com brethren in Chris! Amen.

i loved his facial expression there when i first saw that bit on 'It Might Get Loud'...still do! haha

not sure what Braddock's point is by posting that, but i happened to have watched that movie recently. if you haven't seen it, that's from the bit/"chapter" where he, Jimmy Page & Jack White were discussiong their signature techniques. for The Edge's case, i felt that particular scene showed why he uses effects pedal on the U2 albums very well. i definitely would have the same expression as him playing that Elevation riff sounding the way it did without effects. :dozey:

^ He's created the musical backdrop for the biggest band over the last 25 years. Not only that, but his guitar playing is recognized instantly as being uniquely his own. I don't care if he's a virtuoso or not.

PolarMonkey

indeed! his sound is definitely distinctly his, especially what he does with the delay effect, & imo that movie did a good job of telling the story of how he came to develop the sound of U2.

I followed the link posted here: "The fan who posted the photo said that Bono "could not get out of the car" to have his photo taken and "gave the impression of being in some pain," but happily agreed to the photos, anyway".

So BONO has made some progress, but according to "the fan mentioned" there is still some way to go before BONO can perform in the well-known BONO style.

I'll cross fingers for his full and speedy recovery, so he will soon be fit for performing at U2 concerts.

You're right, Breathe was the first song of this concert. U2 have a habit of not putting the full setlist on their DVD's. Usually the song or two that's omitted is on the bonus disc or an easter egg somewhere on the concert disc.

Interesting. I've been there a good 4 or 5 times, and I didn't recognize it from the aerial shot. Even as I look at it now, it doesn't remind me of the Rose Bowl. I guess it's because I've never been there without 100,000 people. I don't know.

Edit: Also, they must add a bunch of extra seats for football matches. Never seen it that grassy.

My latest news in relation to BONO is a little paragraph / note that

BONO praises the British government's report on the Bloody Sunday shootings in Northern Ireland on 30 January 1972 when British parachute troops (paratroops) killed 13 (unarmed) civilians.

"An 11-minute-long speech does not remove 38 years of pain. It is impossible, but Cameron's words changed the situation, and David Cameron nows appears as a leader. He changed from being a Prime Minister to being a statesman."

U2's £85m makes them world's biggest earning band of 2010

U2 have been named the highest-earning music act of 2010 by Forbes magazine. The band earned £84.9m in the last 12 months to take the title.

Heavy metal rockers AC/DC were second with earnings of £74.5m – the band’s Black Ice tour was the highest grossing tour in the world in the first six months of 2010. Beyonce was the highest paid female, though Forbes reports that more than half the Halo singer’s £56.8m earnings came from endorsement deals with companies such as L’Oreal and Nintendo. Beyonce’s husband Jay-Z ranked sixth with earnings of just over £41m.

Others in the Forbes’ Top Earning Musicians of 2010 list included Bruce Springsteen, Britney Spears and Madonna. Lady GaGa made her first appearance on the annual list, raking in over £40.5m for her 106-date Fame Ball and Monster Ball world tours, but on the whole the list was crammed with established artists who have been around for well over a decade.

The only Brits in the top 10 were Coldplay, at joint 10th place with Black Eyed Peas – both bands earned £31.3 million in the last year.

In other U2 news, the band have confirmed they will reschedule tour dates they cancelled when Bono hurt his back earlier this year, and are keen to have another crack at Glastonbury. "I'm going to be fighting fit next summer in the US (and) looking forward to this summer in Europe,” the frontman said.

“I'm ready, rebuilt by German engineering,” he told E Online. “Better design, I'm told. I'm very well. I can sit. I can stand. I can move around a bit. Feeling strong, feeling confident, know what I'm saying?"

Forbes’ Top Earning Musicians of 2010:

1. U2 - £84.9m
2. AC/DC - £74.5m
3. Beyonce - £56.8m
4. Bruce Springsteen - £45.7m
5. Britney Spears - £41.8m
6. Jay-Z - £41.1m
7. Lady GaGa - £40.5m
8. Madonna - £37.9m
9. Kenny Chesney - £32.6m
= 10. Black Eyed Peas - £31.3m
= 10. Coldplay - £31.3m
=10. Toby Keith - £31.3m

Today I received an e-mail from the head of the organization ONE who looks for Danish volunteers in connection with U2's concerts in Horsens on 15 and 16 August 2010.

The theme (mentioned in this ONE e-mail) is "Make Poverty History" which was also the great theme around the global concerts in July, 2005. It was around the G7 summit and the EU summit, and Tony Blair was charing both summits. The politicians made a lot of pledges, but they have not lived up to what they promised. And I guess that the ONE campaign is to persuade people to put pressure on the politicians to live up to their promises and pledges in 2005 by signing a paper when U2 are giving concert. A worthy cause in my opinion.

NEW U2 SONG SURFACES ONLINE - VIDEO

Footage of U2 rehearsing a new song has surfaced online.

The short film was captured by fans camping out near the gates of the Stadio Olimpico di Torino in Italy, where the group are rehearsing ahead of their first gig of 2010 on Friday (August 6).

The show will be the band's first since frontman Bono underwent back surgery, inadvertently forcing them to cancel a number of US shows as well as their headline slot at Glastonbury.

As U2Tours.com reports, Bono and co have also been heard playing a number of other songs including 'Get On Your Boots', 'Magnificent' and 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me' during soundchecks. The latter song did not appear on any of the band's setlists during the first part of the tour last year.

Watch footage of the new song below.

Nancy you're gonna have a really great time, I couldn't stop jumping and singing the whole concert, I can't say I'm completely happy with the setlist since they didn't play my two favourite songs from the last album, but they played Until the End of the World and Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me which was missing live since 1998, and three new songs, we got to sing happy birthday to The Edge, plus I still have the gig in Rome for a different setlist :awesome:

Bono is back in full form

And I was among the lucky fans who waited for them the night before the show and got to see them coming out to give us pizzas, I didn't get one because of all the police in the middle, but I shook Edge's hand, and that was enough for me to make the six hours waiting worthwhile

THANKS Denise for the little review and the beautiful pictures. I am so relieved / glad to hear that BONO is back in full form.

I am glad that you managed to shake Edge's hand (and wish him happy birthday). One of the new songs (from a rehearsal in Italy) was posted here. It was okay at the first listening.

What about the other two songs? Were they good IYO (in your opinion)?

Denise

The first new song is an instrumental song called Return of the Stingray Guitar, you can hear it in this video, I really like it, it was the intro song before Beautiful Day and it put me in the right mood for the gig

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q6V--xEHU0

The second is a sort of ballad, not sure about that one, I think I prefer the song for Glastonbury, it's more rock even tough I need to listen to both a few more times before getting a real idea of what I think of them.

At one point during the concert I was very close to BONO. He was walking over a movable / mobile bridge I was sitting under.

I was on stage with U2 on 15 August: We were 17 volunteers from the BONO-founded organisation ONE and 17 from AMNESTY International. Each of us volunteers were carrying a lit lantern that we put down on the stage. But even if we were on the same stage, there was quite a distance to where U2 were playing.

Both U2 concerts were great, and Bono and the boys were doing a great job, but Bono was not running as much around as I understand that he normally does.

I was active helping ONE when hearing - Monday from 17 to 17:30 - U2's sound-check.

The Danish press gave the U2 concerts between **** (4 x *) and ****** (6 x *), where 6 x * is maximum, so well done.

ABSOLUTE HIGHLIGHTS for me:

Being ON STAGE on 15 August during WALK ON

ONE (I love that song for eternity - just like VIVA LA VIDA)

SARAJEVO (I love that song - it is not so often played, so nice to hear it again)

MAGNIFICENT

WITH OR WITHOUT YOU - after the concerts I heard some concert-goers singing "Ooh - ooh ooh ooh". That reminded of the Coldplay concert one year ago (16.8) when leaving Herning stadium where the concert-goers were singing the "Oohs" of VIVA LA VIDA. Nice memories.

Mysterious Ways

When coming back again and checking my e-mail, I saw there there was also one from ONE and its co-founder BONO where he thanked for the support.

I was pleased that Snow Patrol was U2's warming up band. I really like the sound of "Just Say YES".

I cannot wait to see them again!

I just heard the Danish Development Minister, Soeren Pind, on Danish television. Soeren Pind met BONO before one of the two U2 concerts in Horsens. BONO's organization ONE had asked Soeren Pind to show up in Horsens to a talk with BONO - that talk lasted around 30 minutes. In beforehand he had been somehow sceptical, but BONO had been very nice. He knew that Denmark and another country (Venezuela?) are in charge of the UN conference on the 2015 goals in September. Bono offered Denmark his help asking if there was something he could do.

People people! Seeing as there is going to be a U2 week looking back at their albums and tours starting from Monday 6th September we would absolutely love contributors to write classic reviews for the albums October, War, Rattle and Hum and No Line On The Horizon. These are the only 4 albums left but we'd love your help! Notify your interest in the thread below!

^Yeah. Well they have the tour announced so far in advance because they had to reschedule all the North American dates. I originally was going to be going to see them July 16th 2010, but that was cancelled. And my friend got a refund on our tickets, so I wasn't going to see them. And then today noticed there are floor seats available, so scooped a few of those up.

Live debut of the discarded How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb tune Mercy.

YouTube - U2 Zurich 2010-09-12 Mercy (live debut) - u2gigs.com

Heard that it's one of possible the listed songs for their next album 'Songs of Ascent' which is rumoured to be released in March 2011. The theory here is that it may have found it's way into the album after the somewhat strange reactions to their last album which the band admitted to that it wasn't accessible enough to be popular. The proposed follow up to No Line On The Horizon, Songs of Ascent, therefore may have been slightly altered to allow the album to be more accessible to the wider audience so in many ways the band have probably dropped the idea that it's No Line On The Horizon's 'twin'. Rather than being an extension of their last album it could be seen that it is in fact completely separate from it's predecessor. That or they probably had an idea that NLOTH wouldn't be incredibly successful so they've got a mighty more 'classic' U2 album to follow it up.

Here's the studio version of Mercy. A fine fine song.

This is really exciting news for U2 fans, especially people who have been fans of the band for a long time. I remember when this track leaked post-HTDAAB how well received it was by fans. I think it has some of Bono's best songwriting and vocals since Achtung Baby.

Really excited about it being played live as chances are it will be on the next album. They don't usually play songs unless they will be on an album.

They did claim that Songs of Ascent was going to be 'biblican themed' and this is as Biblical as it gets. 'I was drinking some wine and it turned to blood'.

Also the song 'Glastonbury' may appear to be about the music festival but it's built on the myth that Jesus and Joseph of Arimathea came to England and Glastonbury where Jesus was taught by the Druids of Glastonbury.

"It's a pilgrimage. It also turns out there's a white flower that twice yearly blooms at Glastonbury. And the mythology of Glastonbury goes back to Joseph of Arimathea – he's the guy who helped take the body of Jesus down from the cross. He is also said to have gone to Britain, to Glastonbury, where he put his staff in the ground. This big tree at Glastonbury, with this white flower, is supposed to come from that. [Bono recites part of the lyrics to U2's song: "Came to find a flowering rose/The flowering rose of Glastonbury".] And he's supposed to have brought the cup from the Last Supper, the Holy Grail. "

Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil has said that Muse are a better stadium band than U2 these days! I am shocked to be honest! Muse are good but in reality half their songs sound the same (to me), They do not have the diversity in song to compete with U2. Muse maximise their full potential live but even at that it's nowhere compared to even an average U2!

p.s - must be notified that Biffy Clyro supported Muse at Wembley last week.

i havent seen U2 live so im not completely qualified to comment on this. but i would say the reputations of both bands' live shows have suffered a little due to lackluster releases last year. but i have seen muse live, in a stadium setting this year and the poor quality of their new album really hurt the quality of the show. because of U2's massive back catalogue i just dont see the their new music making much a difference.

but you take both band's at their respective peaks and theyre very much comparable.

mind you U2 have been genuine stadium trotters for over 20yrs now. muse less than 5yrs and seem to be on the decline already.

16-09-2010, 03:20 AM
The problem with Muse is that you're going to get people who don't like a singe song of theirs. That's rarely the case for U2. I'd certainly agree with you that Muse's latest stuff doesn't stand up that well. U2's last album didn't stand up too well I thought live because the fans weren't as into them as say the songs from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb or All That You Can't Leave Behind. But still even with the songs from NLOTH that weren't great live, U2 somehow still were able to pull of the most miraculous of shows when they promoted those songs last year during the 360 tour. They are still of a more heavenly level than Muse live and I don't really know where Simon Neil is coming from.

Simon Neil most probably feels indebted to Muse for allowing his band to support them at wembley stadium. so his judgment is a little clouded. nevertheless it will be interesting to see where Muse are in 15yrs time and if their status is anything like U2's.

i still think U2 are the last of the true megabands (beatles, stones, led zep, floyd and queen) i just dont see coldplay and muse ever reaching those levels.

it may also be that Simon personally is more a fan of Muse than U2. i'm not much of a Muse fan myself, though i do like a couple of their songs, but from the ones that i do like i'd say Muse has a harder/edgier sound than U2 in general?

i still think U2 are the last of the true megabands (beatles, stones, led zep, floyd and queen) i just dont see coldplay and muse ever reaching those levels.
+1 to that too!

though i'm guessing those of us who feel that way are generally of an older age group? late 20s or 30s & upwards? grew up in or lived through the 80s?
i know a few teens who think U2 are overrated and that they are old stuff. these are the ones who'd insist that a more recent band like Coldplay or Muse are much better than U2. it saddens me as a U2 fan that they'd think U2 are overrated old geezers, but then that's their own opinion as a non-U2 fan. so fair enough, imo.

anyway, what i'm trying to say is that it may have to do with which musical era we grow up in that shapes how we see a band that's been active & successful as long as U2 has. though, of course, there are exceptions to this theory of mine...like the youngsters who love The Beatles even though they're born way after the band called it quits.

wouldnt be surprised to see this.

U2 could be set to reissue their 1991 album 'Achtung Baby'.

According to singer-songwriter John Vanderslice, the Irish group's seventh studio effort was being remastered in the next room to his in a Los Angeles studio.

"They're remastering 'Achtung Baby' in next room," he said on his Twitter page - Twittter.com/JohnVanderslice, before later asking his followers. "Any suggestions for witty opening salvos to drop on U2 crew when I barge in on 'Achtung Baby' remastering session?"

Confirmation on the reissue has yet to be announced, but a 2011 remastered edition of the LP would coincide with the 20th anniversary of it's release in November 1991.

Their concert is tonight in Paris. i'm going to see them by a few hours. Yesterday, Bono was meeting Sarkozy and a crowd were waiting for him to arrive. I was there. I saw Bono opening his window. I shouted "see you tomorrow" together with a guy. Bono smiled at us and waived his hand to us. I took a first picture when he arrived, then a second one when he left. Just before leaving, he got out of the car a couple of minutes. The cops prevented us of approching him but only a few people succeeded in it and got an autograph. I didn't, to my dismay.

Surprised that nothing has happened on this U2 thread lately.

Funny how I could relate many U2 songs to the situation in CHILE where today the trapped Chilean miners were brought up in the Dayligth and reunited with family members.

VH1 Denmark had U2 as today's Superstar and played these U2 songs which I listened to with the events in Chile in mind:

Where the streets have got no name (thinking of the galleries / shafts down there in the mine)

Stuck in a moment you can't get out of (thinking of these miners stuck in the mine that they could not get out of).

Then my absolute favourite U2 song: ONE.
Wonderful song - and also a symbol of REUNIFICATION. Written on the eve of the reunificiation of Germany. And now I think of it as a symbol of the reunification of these miner families in Chile.

The Saints are coming (originally written about the rescue the people trapped by the Katrina hurricane - wrong spelling, I know. Now these men are being helped up in the DAYLIGHt)

Who's gonna ride your wild horses (here thinking: If the miners had not got up safe etc., who should take care of their families financially)

BEAUTIFUL DAY - it sure is.

With or without you (the thoughts revolving around - will they make it or not - With or Without You)

MAGNIFICENT

Elevation (them being lifted up in the Daylight in a sort of Elevator - being freed from their captivity under ground)

Sweetest Thing (being reunited with family and friends)

Get on your boots (back to normal life - at least very soon)

Also played: Sunday, Bloody Sunday, BECAUSE OF YOU, I still haven't found what I am looking for.
