I'm just trying to imagine dropping $750,000 a day..:toff: Well, that's only $520.83 a minute, about what it costs to call Ireland from here.:laugh3: Or, only $8.68 a second. Every second, another $8.68. Someone's managing this pretty well, I would imagine?

You can't please everyone.

And the moral of the story is: if you try to please everyone, you only end up pleasing the horned toads. (they make it across the road with fewer flats, because they're sharp.)
Just enjoy the music Malcolm - pretty good stuff, if you ask me. If you ask Bono, well, to paraphrase, "We're the best band in the world. The Best, Bar None." Of course, that means they have to live up to those standards, so perhaps it's a good reinforcement tool!

Paul is one of the best in the business.

I don't like 360 based on it being big for the sake of being big. ZooTv was big to make fun of themselves.

Popmart was big to make fun of media and the world.

It seems to me 360 is just to cram more people into the stadium, its cool granted. Just not my thing.

By the way, Im critical because I expected better. One day I will see them again when they get over this spending money for the sake of it.

U2 will profit because those numbers dont include merchandise. Which saved their asses with PopMart.

Now, Now - it's big because the stage backdrop was unsightly and blocked the view for the fans in the other seats. Tall enough now to be "unseen" because it's so large - only Goodyear and space satellites can get the whole thing into focus.:P (and I like it - it's cool.)
Bono liked Mr. Macphisto, but it was time to move on..
& cramming people into a stadium is what it's all about. Otherwise, playing to the crickets isn't quite as much fun (unless we're all crickets..).

If you expect better, then compete with them! Nothing spurs a band like competition.;)

Pop mart came after Pop Tart, so naturally it was to make fun of media and all that jazz! Overproduced media hype is what we're good at in the modern world, and the media could use a few more satires these days as well..

Merchandise. Action figures sold separately. Some restrictions apply. See package label for instructions and details.:P (;)shhh! I want my Bono, Edge, Larry, and Adam bobble heads! Actually, hmm.. there's a marketable idea!:idea2::shifty::laugh3:) I must do a search..:escaping::escaping3:

chuck kottke

chuck kottke
01-11-2009, 03:44 AM
:laugh3: Hmm.. I can only imagine - let's see, there's the royalty set, with Queen Elizabeth (Buckingham palace in the background), for 60 pounds sterling each, or the U2 set, for 77 pounds sterling each, complete with a matching set of tea cups and saucers.. So where do I look for something like that Malcolm?

Anyhow, I found it interesting and coincidental, that wandering the net, I discovered that Bono was in Dallas in 1983. A security guard who recognized him asked him for an autograph, and where he was headed. Bono said something about seeing a movie - Trading Places. I was just thinking about that movie the other day actually, after watching a show on some of the Wall-Street insider moves affecting us, and thinking how cathartic it would be if those big shots were suddenly put in the shoes of those people they bilked. Anyhow, just a daydream..

The Spoons? Well, now I'm not sure - didn't check yet. So, it was just a comic spoof - alright then.;) Bobble heads - custom ones, but no line of them yet. Perhaps a lucrative item!

Also, my disappointment has been filled with excitement for John Mayer. I know rag on me all you want.

I've got nothing against John Mayer. In fact, I've seen him a few times myself. However, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting over the disappointment of a U2 show with a John Mayer concert. That idea is just incomprehensible.

Hello, U2 lovers of Coldplaying!!

I just saw that U2 is coming to Philadelphia in July, and I'm like, FREAKING. :freak:

But I have a question. If I'm subscribed to U2.com for free, just the simple subscription, do I still get in on the presale?

I'm so excited. :wacky:

bjaiken
01-11-2009, 07:58 PM
^ I don't believe so. I think you have to pay the $50 subscription, and then you are assigned a pre-sale tier. I believe there are currently 4 different tiers (obviously, the newer the member, the higher your tier number). I never subscribe, which is probably why I always end up with crummy seats to U2. It's a great deal for the years that they tour, but when they are not touring, $50 is a lot of money to me. Plus, I am a fan of too many bands, and they all offer some type of similar scam, errrrrr, deal.

coldplay_is_louve.

Oh yeah, it's a scam, but at least it's only a one-off payment (is it?) as opposed to some bands fan-clubs where it's $20 a year.

coldplay_is_louve.
01-11-2009, 08:58 PM
That's true.

But $50 is still a little too expensive for me. :D

I can't wait! And I have no idea what to expect since this is my first U2 concert, and that makes it all more exciting.:P

If you're going to the show I don't think its that bad a deal. You can buy 4 tickets with the pre-sale. And you also get an exclusive CD or something like that. So I like to think of it as being an extra $10 per ticket, and then $10 for an exclusive CD....thats how I justify it :P

Black Rose
01-11-2009, 09:10 PM
I found the more expensive tickets were right at the back of the stage (at Wembley) (so what if I was looking at other people's tickets when lining up to go in :P)

I just thought I would add that the major benefit of the pre-sale is securing GA tickets, which are the best and practically cheapest tickets in the house. However, if you miss out on GA, you will still get the next best available, which hover around the $250 range. For me, it's GA or bust because I am not dropping $250 to sit in the bleachers of a stadium show.

Also, even if you get GA, you are stuck spending the entire day in line. In Los Angeles, fans were lining up in great numbers the night before.

I love U2 but going to their shows is the biggest headache for me.

I love reserved seating because you don't have to get there for silly-o-clock to get a decent spot.

Like for Snow Patrol on their reworked all seated tour, I'm 2nd row but me and my brother ain't planing to get there until after 6pm (cos it's cheaper parking)

^ I agree. I prefer reserved seating as well. But for u2, decent reserved seating costs a fortune. And with it being a stadium tour, they look like ants unless you drop the big bucks and get the prime reserved seats. On the vertigo tour, I bought cheap uppers and was completely happy. But that was an arena, not a stadium.

kinda makes me wish at times that either i was born a decade or so earlier so i'd have gotten to see U2 before they got as big as they are now or just wishing that they weren't (arguably?) the biggest bands in the world. :P

actually, in my case, wanting to go to a U2 show is already a headache. i've heard that the reason they don't ever tour in Asia besides Japan (i can't really recall if they've ever done a show in Taiwan or Hong Kong...the only other possible Asian countries western artistes regularly tour) is because most Asian promoters can afford the cost of bringing U2 to their country. of course, this is just what i've heard...but i think there is some truth to it.

I would have loved to see Coldplay in Montreal. Coldplay absolutely love playing in Canada and it shows. As well as the land down under.

I can believe Japanese promoters cant afford U2. I would think that Hong Kong and Bejing could front the cash though. U2 in the Birdsnest would be kinda cool. I have to admit.

Yeah, I had a friend see them at Osheaga this year. She loved it. I would have loved to go, but working at camp the last few summers has limited my concert-ability.

I wish they would come to Halifax again and do more than one song at an awards show that features BEP and Nickelback :P

Hahaha one song defiantly sucks. Coldplay is only going to get bigger, but I have some of the same complaints about Viva La Vida Tour as I do 360. They both need to break these set-list constraints.

The only reason I dont hold it against Coldplay as much is they have 4 albums, not 14.

yeah, but the thing with China, they don't like artistes who have ever had any involvement with anything against the way they do things. they did ban Oasis cos Noel happened to have once taken part or performed at an event that had some anti-China tone to it. & Bono is quite the prominent campaigner of a few causes...i would not be surprised if he's stepped on their sensitive toes already at some point.

Yeah. That has been my biggest complaint about the Viva tour. Especially pretty much no Parachutes stuff? Come on!
With U2, its weird because previous tours they definitely shuffled things up more night to night, and they played alot more songs from their catalogue. I'm not sure why they're playing it so close to a standard setlist this tour. Now I enjoy the setlist because a good chunk of the songs I didn't see at the Vertigo show I went to in 2005. But I'm really hoping that for the 2010 leg they switch it up some.

read the most bizarre thing on the wembley stadium website. we all know that every show on this 360 tour has been sold out (or so they claim) but on this site it says that on the first night at wembley U2 had 86 000 in the crowd and then the next night it was only 77 000. how does that work? where did the 9000 places go?

also surprised that 86 000 is the biggest music crowd in the stadium's history. if wembley was in south america they could easily stuff in 100 000+ haha.

I was on VGANews.TV to find news about the Philippines and found this article there (under Entertainment):

MTV Europe Awards to celebrate fall of Berlin wall

11/02/2009 | 07:05 PM - GMAnews.TV (with mostly Philippine / Filipino news, but also some international news)

BERLIN – This time it's Berlin calling.

The MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) are coming to the German capital with an international cast, featuring performances by U2, the Foo Fighters, Shakira and Leona Lewis.

BERLIN is the only city to host the awards show TWICE, in 1994 and on Thursday — a decision MTV said it made to celebrate the 20th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL on NOV. 9.

"This year's EMAs is unique in having the THEME OF UNITY in addition to what we normally do — celebrating and playing the music," MTV International's CEO Bill Roedy told The Associated Press in an interview.

LEGENDARY IRISH BAND U2 WILL PLAY A SHORT SET IN FRONT OF THE BRANDENBURG GATE BEFORE THE AWARDS SHOW is held at the O2 World stadium. Tickets to U2's performance were given away free online and were snapped up within hours.

U2's CONCERT is not only A HISTORICAL NOD TO THE SIGNIFICANCE TO THE BRANDENBURG GATE — which lies on the line that formerly divided East and West Berlin — but ALSO A REFLECTION OF THE BAND's HISTORY. THEIR SEVENTH ALBUM, 'ACHTUNG BABY' WAS RECORDED IN BERLIN IN 1990 and their single 'ONE' WAS INSPIRED BY THE FALL OF THE WALL and WRITTEN ON THE EVE OF GERMAN REUNIFICATION.

The EMAs feature 13 award categories with nominees from Europe, North and South America. Traditionally, many awards go to American artists who are also popular in Europe.

Last year's EMAs were held in Liverpool, with Americans Britney Spears, Kanye West and Pink all taking home awards. There is also a Best European Band that went last year to Turkey's Emre Adym.

This year's nominees include newcomers like pop-act Lady Gaga and the English electro-pop duo La Roux, along with established acts like Green Day, Shakira and Jay-Z. Vying for Best European Act are Finnish rock group Deep Insight and Italy's Lost, who beat out the Jonas Brothers this year to win the 2009 TRL Best Band award.

Music from the Western world was embraced by youth in East Germany before and after the fall of the wall.

"Everything that looked like a lively and vivacious culture was loved by East German youth because they felt a great yearning," Frithjof Hager, a sociologist at the Free University in Berlin, told the AP. "They wanted to get out of the cruel, gray unhappiness of their country and experience the new and beautiful."

The fall of the wall had major impact on Berlin's creative scene, its mayor says.

"With the fall of the wall, Western energy and the creative and artistic impulses of the music scene in Berlin were set free," Klaus Wowereit told the AP. - AP

i think the re-mastered CDs are more for newer/younger fans to have a chance at getting hold of the older U2 albums, especially those from the 80s. ;)

They gave under a blood red sky a 9.0/10. which is a very good score. but then again thats the lowest mark they could of have given it without losing all integrity.

Boy - 8.3
October - 7.1
War - 8.9
Unforgettable Fire - 9.3
The Joshua Tree - 8.9

I am loving the new remix on the remaster, the Lanois one! For anyone saying that this wouldnt fit on 360 is insane! The only problem is Bono hitting th high notes, but he did Kite and Sometimes on the last tour, he can put passion into one song. I think he can do it, maybe not as good as the album but defiantly a good version. Plus he has Edge to help.

Ive been loving the reissue too. 360 did one thing for me, Ive been listening to a lot of old U2 and loving it! It kind of makes me grateful to be a Coldplay fan this early on, I wish I had seen Twisted Logic, but if Coldplay grow half as well as U2, we are in for a wild ride.

I've been listening to Zooropa, Popmart Live From Mexico City and UF Reissue nonstop! They just gelled so damn well. Larry and Adam really defanfited from Lanois and it angers me he doesnt get the mainstream appreciation Eno gets. If he worked with Coldplay I would go on record saying the album they would release would be their best ever!

Thats part of the disappointment I get from No Line and 360, they can do so much better! I think Eno needs to do what he did with Coldplay and kick Bono out for awhile. Tell him to be all touristy around Vancouver for a week and not come to the studio!

I got my tickets!!! :dance::dance::dance::dance: 101 7 row :D
I didn't get GA. The Sun in Miami in the middle of July is just too much for me. I don't think I can handle hours on line with that heat. Besides, they run all over the place and the stage it's just too big. I think if you are up in the reserve seats you can see the whole stage (a more general view).
But, I love the energy that you can feel when you are close to the band. what do you think?

I would love to be in the Red Zone. those tickets were not for sale.
Anyone knows how to get them?

As you probably know, U2 will perform in Berlin today - a free gig. And U2 will perform at today's MTV EMA show tonight.

PLEASE NOTE: MTV transmits EMA-related stuff from Berlin all afternoon and evening - Danish / German times):

15.30 - 16.30: 16 years of EMA
16.30 - 17: HOST CITY SPECIAL (maybe also U2).
17-18: Ten of the best EMA performances (in the past)
18: Greatest EMA moments
18.30: Sexiest moments
19 Spotlight 2
19.30 - 20.30: 16 years of EMA Highlights
20.30: Backstage Best Bits
21-23: LIVE from EMA 2009

I wish you A WONDERFUL U2-filled AFTERNOON and EVENING.

Both Saturday and Sunday, MTV re-transmits the entire MTV EMA show called MAIN SHOW a couple of times:

SATURDAY: From 10 to 12; AGAIN from 16 to 18.10 and again from 22.10 to 0.10. SUNDAY: MAIN SHOW at 21.40 to 23.40.
A program called "MTV Week-end Break: MTV EMA 2009" Sunday from 12 to 18.10.

(These hours I have from MTV, Denmark - I am sure that the main show will be re-transmitted many times over the week-end and very likely at the hours stated above as a MTV EUROPE production).

Times or hours of The Winners Are: Saturday from 18.40 to 19.40 and again early Sunday from 0.10 to 1.10 and 19.40.

PLEASE NOTE: MTV transmits EMA-related stuff from Berlin all afternoon and evening - Danish time = Belgium time, I think):

15.30 - 16.30: 16 years of EMA
16.30 - 17: HOST CITY SPECIAL (maybe also U2).17-18: Ten of the best EMA performances (in the past)
18: Greatest EMA moments
18.30: Sexiest moments
19 Spotlight 2
19.30 - 20.30: 16 years of EMA Highlights
20.30: Backstage Best Bits
21-23: LIVE from EMA 2009

I wish you A WONDERFUL U2-filled AFTERNOON and EVENING.

I wonder whether U2 will win for BEST ACT (I hope so, U2 truly deserve it - not least based on all these fine comments of PRAISE from those seeing them LIVE) and BEST ROCK (they definitely deserve to win).
U2 recorded "Achtung, Baby" in Berlin, and "ONE" was written on the eve of the REUNIFICATION. So most likely, ONE will be played tonight as well as the free U2 gig in Berlin this afternoon. (I think that it might be shown - or some parts of it - at 16.30 to 17 from MTV: Host CITY SPECIAL). Watch if if you can - and then tell me ALL about it.

COLDPLAY was nominated for BEST WORLDSTAGE. They deserve to win too. VH1, Denmark re-transmits COLDPLAY Worldstage on Sunday from 20 or was it 21 o'clock. Be sure that I will be watching if I possibly can.

MTV European Music Awards 2009 in Berlin on 5 November 2009:

(21 - 23.20 o'clock incl. commercial breaks).

U2 performed in front of the Brandenburger Gate and played several songs: ONE, MAGNIFICENT and SUNDAY, BLOODY SUNDAY - Jay-Z entered the stage and provided some rapping to Sunday, Bloody Sunday - all very beautiful.

Larry added this (on the thread about Coldplay nominated for Best World Stage for the MTV EMA show on 5 Nov. 2009): "U2's performance in front of the Brandenburg Gate was superb! It started to snow a few minutes before they came on stage. I watched and listened to it via internet. - There was an audio live stream of the U2 concert and people on a fan-site uploaded all their pics and video clips. The lightshow was pretty amazing! Hope MTV will show some parts of it during the EMA broadcast, too."

Larry: "They just showed "One" and "Magnificent"! They played a few more songs (probably shown later on) including one song with a special guest! I won't tell you who it was...but a bit related to Coldplay's Wembley gigs." (Larry was of course referring to Lost feat. Jay-Z). U2 played "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" and Jay-Z joined for some rap verses.

Larry: "U2 and Jay-Z were fantastic! But I'm pissed that they didn't show U2 performing "Beautiful Day / Blackbird (Snipped)", "Vertigo" and "Moment Of Surrender" which they played as well.

U2 was nominated for BEST ROCK and BEST LIVE ACT and won the AWARD for BEST LIVE ACT.

^ Yeah, U2 is my favorite band. Have fun delving into their catalogue.

Hey, I don't know if everyone has been doing this and I'm the last to know (wouldn't be the first time), but if you go to U2's YouTube page and click on the individual songs from the Rose Bowl (not the entire concert), they are all in incredible HD (make sure to click the HD button).

When you blow it up to full screen, it is crystal clear and without a million pixels. In fact, I can't imagine the DVD being more impressive. Here is Ultraviolet (remember to click HD and go full screen):

just heard from a person who was at the MTV performance and he said that the place looked a little empty with only the 10 000 ticket holders inside so before the show started they opened up part of "The Wall" and let in the people who were watching from the outside. Live8 was held at the same venue and they had no restrictions in place and it went very smoothly.

Who cares? U2, MTV, or whoever was planning/promoting the event felt the need to take security precautions. It's a situation where you can't win. If there is no perimeter and people end up getting trampled, then U2 are a bunch of assholes for not taking proper precautions when they knew there was going to be a crowd. You do what you think is right and then take the heat. Someone is always going to disagree.

By the way, I love how Bono dances toward the end of the song. It makes me happy :)

Also, I love how it shows Edge hitting his petals after the line "you're love is like a secret that gets passed around."

I love Coldplay shows for the same reason that I love U2 shows...they are just uplifting. But U2 absolutely created the blue print. Like when Chris Martin used to swing the light bulb during Fix You...that was amazing, but it was right out of the U2 play book. U2 not only has the songs, but they have the complete vibe to go along with it.

It feels good to have a ticket in hand for a U2 show. I've seen them 3X, and on every occassion, I picked up my ticket the day of the show. I am still trying to upgrade, but at least I know I'm in (and I have been known to move away from my assigned seat).

I think they are going to add a 2nd night in Anaheim, which should lesson some of the demand. However, ticket scalping is very bad in Los Angeles. Those vultures always make a ton off U2 tickets, so I don't suspect they will stop anytime soon.

any noticeable differences?

Just that there seems to be more energy and it's much more alive than the older cd I had. Plus the deluxe edition with the extra unreleased materials and bsides as well as live songs is fantastic.

Interesting! I think I'll have to pick one up. TUF is my favourite U2 album.

I started to become hesitant about the remasters after the only noticeable difference (to me) re: The Joshua Tree was it was a bit louder and slightly more crisp (although I love the deluxe set of it. The book is very lovely and I adore the live DVD too.). The deluxe box I got with the first three albums is one I really wish I hadn't bought. I like the extras but the remastering doesn't really seem all that great and I think I could have put my money to better use.

They don't have to move the claw. They have 3 of them, so one can be used for the current concert and another can be set up in the next city. You may, in fact, get a 2nd show. Who knows?

I didn't know that. Thanks! I will keep my fingers crossed :D
But I remember I read (a while ago) something about a cancellation in NJ or NY for that reason. I might be wrong.

The NJ show was moved b/c a football game got moved up in time and they wouldn't have had enough time to dismantle the stage.

I don't know if I want to go see them again on this tour, not a big fan of the stage and Bono sounded rough.

Got tickets for the second night in Anaheim. I'm taking my step-mom to this one and I don't think she'd fare well in a GA Floor, so I settled for some higher seats. Should still be fun, though.

Lately I've gotten really addicted to "Even Better than the Real Thing". One of U2's catchiest songs.

We're very pleased to confirm that U2 will headline the Pyramid Stage on Friday night at Glastonbury 2010.

Said Michael Eavis: "The 26-year-old rumour has finally come true. At last, the biggest band in the world are going to play the best festival in the world! Nothing could be better for our 40th anniversary party. And there are even more surprises in the pipeline..."

Hey guys I haven't listened to anything after Achtung Baby. Which album would you recommend I check out from the newish U2 stuff?

Difficult question! No Line On The Horizon took me a few listens though to realise how brilliant it is. Probably the best album since Achtung Baby. Pop I feel is a little gem, and All That You Can't Leave Behind and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb are quite mainstream. However have you listened to Zooropa? It's like Achtung Baby - but sober.

What I'm saying is listen to them all!

Anyhow, does anyone have a favourite U2 performance they'd like to share? For me it's this one. Running To Stand Still (strangely the guy cut out Bono's harmonica piece?) and Where The Streets Have No Name from Zoo TV live in Sydney. Awesome, and the bridge between the two songs is fucking spine tingling! Particularly the moment Edge's guitar kicks in at the beginning of Streets!

U2's Pop has been included amongst 12 biggest album flops. Bit harsh considering they forgot the obvious ones like Robbie Williams's Rudebox. MSN comment that after Pop U2 went back into duller, more mainstream territory which if they knew anything cannot be applied to No Line On The Horizon. I think if U2 made another album like Pop, they would have been in serious danger of slipping outside the public eye altogether as Zooropa and Pop were by no means mainstream albums, albeit very good ones, especially Zooropa. I think a lot of people were pleanantly surprised when they heard Beautiful Day for the first time and thought 'wow, U2 are back!'

Absolutely LOVE that rendition of the song. Sung with such passion and very touching. Better than any other version of the song including Elvis's!

Yeah, if you don't have it already by the whole concert Zoo TV Live From Sydney on DVD. It is a quite simply stunning live show that gave me shivers down my spine most times! It's really amazing so you HAVE to buy it! :D

Sometimes people overreact when they say 'YOU HAVE TO BUY THIS!!' but definitely not on this occasion. Amazingly before I bought the DVD I wasn't the biggest fan of Achtung Baby but the dvd converted me into thinking it was their best album by far! It's kinda sad really but I'm gagging to put the DVD on the instance I get back from university in a couple of weeks just to watch it rather than watching Youtube videos of it! I guess it's allowed considering I've been away from home for 3 months now! :laugh3:

As of right now I can't believe they're ending the tour in Rome.

There have been some rumours about shows in Latin America before June.

Just saw the movie Brothers, and as you probably know, "White as Snow" is in it.

Man, it just fit so well.

U2 could possibly road test some new songs in some of next years 360 concerts, whether a new album is released or not. Look out for them if they do.

In a way I hope they don't road test new stuff unless it has a proper release. Judging from the 360 tour thus far the new songs didn't get the greatest response.

It's strange because I feel part of that is down to the reason that their new songs probably don't fit into that massive spaceship stage of theirs. That stage comes into it's own for songs like Unforgettable Fire and other greatest hits though. Don't get me wrong the new album is wonderful, but people probably expected more epicness to flow from their songs, which not many do.

Great band! Can't wait to see them again next summer, I saw few international bands and only U2 blown me away!

Rome is the last, right? I'm still hoping for some concert in Sarajevo :)

If they try to do too many new songs, they won't get a good response. Any band wouldn't get a good response that way.

Particularly with U2 whose back catalogue has probably more famous songs than most of all the biggest bands in the world today put together. Plus these new songs are difficult to do live, unlike say with Coldplay's Viva La Vida album where they played almost all the songs on that album in one gig, because those songs transmitted brilliantly live.

They did die. But somehow on the way to the afterlife they were intercepted by aliens. However there wasn't enough room for Bono's ego on this alien planet so they sent him back to earth. Vola! The 360 Tour.

U2 can never get enough critical acclaim. Achtung Baby is clearly the best album of the past 25 years!

Christina? That is your name? Strangely No Line On The Horizon is one of my least favourite from the album. Fez - Being Born is one I am loving a lot at the moment.

I see Rolling Stone have awards U2 with top album of 2009. Not bad, but as I've said before, they are merely polls. Having said that I haven't bought an album this year which I like more.

They do and very passionately.

When they finished their gig at Houston this past October, all of them went to Cancun for an overindulgence in the Mexican sun for three days before their next show in Oklahoma City.

This is where Bono told a Mexican fan that they will be there this upcoming 2010 before June.

I would have thought so. U2 not doing Latin America would be very strange. But i don't know why some of these major bands leave it till the last legs of their tours or roughly about to play in Latin America?
