when they did this one in Dallas, Bono pulled a kid out of the audience and walked with him around the whole stage! It was pretty cool.

yeah, does look a bit britney-esque, but with a stage that huge, it's the only way he'd not be stuck in one place!

I reckon it's due to the size of the stage & the setup…considering he does travel around the stage & the outer ring. I think he's also using a wireless guitar amp for a couple of his guitars.

Wow. ! I have to admit, I have NEVER been a U2 fan at any level, and have resisted even sitting through all their stuff and giving them half a chance. Besides the odd song forced on me via the radio or something.

But watching the concert (amazing stage set up) I now have to admit- ok I might now consider seeing them live. (Funny that, cuz they just played our city this week, I didn`t even think of going)

A show like this could indeed make me a fan....hey/ its a starting point.:P

yeah, definitely not so soon. they'd need to keep going & be as successful as U2 for a while longer still.

tho there already is a generation of younger music fans who are probably more familiar with Coldplay than U2 & think Coldplay are a bigger act. tho that's more of a generation thing.

But Bono just does not grab me in stage presence...great music to listen to for me, just wont need the visuals to enjoy it. I doubt most normal gigs are as done out as this one in LA though:\ Oh well, just popped in to wave the "Newest Fan" banner, sooo...goodnight all !

This Sunday, October 25th @ 8:30 p.m. (PT) tune into the world's biggest band performing on the world's largest stage. YouTube and U2 have joined forces to live stream U2's performance this Sunday at The Rose Bowl Stadium.

well...that was absolutely amazing. I assume the whole concert wil be available later in HD, but I don't have any adjectives left to apply to that. Overall it ran pretty smoothly save for a freeze-up 1 minute in streets, causing me to miss the rest of the song before I got back on for ultraviolet.

well, Chris is a pretty energetic lead singer...if that's who you're comparing Bono to. & you should see Liam of Oasis perform then...even less stage presence, in that sense. all he really does is walk up to the mic with his hands clasped behind him & sing with his lips pressed up against the mic. ;)

2010 North America dates announced! :D
http://www.atu2.com/news/u2-announces-2010-north-american-concert-dates.html
U2 has announced an initial set of North American concert dates in 2010, bringing the U2 360 tour back for visits to several cities that were passed over on the current leg of the tour. For now, here are the dates, cities, and venues that have been announced:

6 June, 2010 Anaheim CA US Angel Stadium
12 June, 2010 Denver CO US Invesco Field
16 June, 2010 Oakland CA US Oakland Coliseum
20 June, 2010 Seattle WA US Qwest Field
23 June, 2010 Edmonton CA Commonwealth Stadium
30 June, 2010 East Lansing MI Spartan Stadium
3 July, 2010 Toronto ON CA Rogers Centre
6 July, 2010 Chicago IL US Soldier Field
9 July, 2010 Miami FL US Land Shark Stadium
12 July, 2010 Philadelphia PA Lincoln Financial Field
16 July, 2010 Montreal QC Venue TBA
19 July, 2010 New York NY New Meadowlands Stadium

We do expect additional concerts to be announced, particularly where there are lengthy periods of time between dates listed above. (Between June 6 and 12, for example, another show at Angel Stadium seems likely.) However, a Live Nation news release specifically says that Chicago and Toronto will be "one night only."

Look for U2.com presales to begin this coming week. The public on-sale date for Oakland, Edmonton, and Toronto is November 2, and for Denver it's November 6.

The show last night was AWESOME! I loved it. U2 performed incredibly The Black Eyed Peas were good too. It was so cool when Slash came out and performed with them. It was so unexpected. Leaving the venue was horrible but I guess that's expected in a 95,000+ crowd.

I will say that the show was good but, as I feared, the stadium environment was too much. I was amazed at how hot a ticket it was for a venue that holds 95,000. I usually scalp tickets, and there were none to be had. I gave some guy $40 bucks just so I could get in.

I don't regret going though. I had to see the stage for myself, and it is amazing. Plus, I got to listen to some great tunes even if I couldn't see the people who were playing them :D Ticketmaster released some seats for $275, and I would have spent that if I thought it would have been an amazing experience, but somehow I think I would still not get a fantastic view. I just hate the Rose Bowl. I am so happy they are playing Angels Stadium the next time around.

Question: Why is Ultraviolet such a bad ass song? I freaking love that song, and it seems to be a favorite of many U2 fans despite is relative obscurity. I loved Bono's lit jacket and the glowing circle mic. So cool. As for the new album, I got what I expected: Breathe and No Line On The Horizon I thought were the best songs. I even liked Get On Your Boots.

I just love this band. So good live.

If you receive some German tv channels, don't miss a new music program called "Number One!" tomorrow evening. It will be aired at 10.15pm on Kabel1 and Markus Kavka's first show deals with U2. He did an exclusive interview with Bono back in July.

Some parts of it are able to watch here (in English)...

U2 will perform in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate next Thursday, November 5, as part of the 16th MTV Europe Music Awards. And you can register now for a chance to get a pair of free tickets.

As a prelude to the Fall of The Wall celebrations in Berlin, the band return to the city for a free ticketed performance which will be beamed into the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards.

'It'll be an exciting spot to be in, 20 years almost to the day since the wall came down.' said Paul McGuinness, U2's manager. 'Should be fun.'

Tickets to attend 'MTV EMAs present U2 at the Brandenburg Gate' will be free of charge and available by registering HERE (English Language) or HERE (German language) from 0900 (CET) on Wednesday 28 October 2009.

Tickets, which will take the form of a bar-coded e-ticket, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and will be restricted to a maximum of 2 per applicant. Access to the performance will be strictly via one advance, scanned e-ticket per person. Tickets will not be available on the night.

'The exceptional musical heritage of this year's EMAs spans genres and generations and we are extremely proud to be bringing U2 to Berlin for this extraordinary performance,' said Antonio Campo Dall'Orto, EVP, Music Brands, MTV Networks International and Executive Producer for the MTV Europe Music Awards. 'This year's Awards will be remembered as the night when the world's major music players came together against the backdrop of the fall of the Berlin Wall to celebrate music, freedom and the birth of a new age in Europe.'

The MTV Europe Music Awards will take place at the 02 World, Berlin on Thursday 5 November 2009 and will be broadcast live on MTV at 9pm CET. The MTV Europe Music Awards are sponsored by Sony Ericsson, MTV Games/Harmonic's The Beatles' Rock Band and Dell. For more information - and to vote - please go to www.mtvema.com

U2 just have an aura about them live which no other band has. I believe that bands like Coldplay and Muse are just as good performance wise during gigs, but in terms of an aura U2 have IT! They are the most extraordinary band I've ever come across. More so than the Beatles for me. Their live shows make me think... 'how is that physically possible??' The huge towers and tv screens of the Zoo TV tour is unbelievable! The masive arch - FUCKING HUGE screen and of course the lemon during Popmart was fantastic!!! And this huge 360 stage with an incredible tv screen... unbelievable! Only U2 could come up with such things!

p.s - the popmart set - my favourite!

MrMagpie
29-10-2009, 12:48 AM
Yeah, I don't know which one is my favourite. But I think it might be Popmart. I loved the whole look of the tour, the muscle shirts, the lemon, the screen, the songs, everything about it was awesome.
I love the Popmart versions of Until the End of the World and Last Night On Earth.

i've been trying to convince a friend of mine that U2 is the last of the true "megabands". but he remains adamant that bands like coldplay and muse will one day reach the heights of U2 but i just dont see that happening. yes maybe in some parts of the world they will become huge but i just cant imagine either of them doing stadium tours for the next 20years the current music climate just doesnt allow for it. and last time i checked neither Muse nor Coldplay wrote The Joshua Tree.

other megabands = pink floyd, rolling stones, the beatles, ac/dc, led zeppelin and queen.

chuck kottke
29-10-2009, 01:05 AM
But life is growth, change, and improvement! U2 started out, as anyone band does, sounding like a so-so cover band, and weren't even certain if they would continue. But they grew, and improved quite dramatically! So Coldplay has very much so as well - it's a matter of natural development. Ever listen to some of the very early Beatles works? Sounds more like howling, than like the grand songs they later came to master!

deaths_friend
29-10-2009, 02:07 AM
ok both coldplay and muse are about a decade into their careers (going by release of debut album) compare that to where U2 were in 1989-90. they had already released 5 massive albums and brought out Rattle + Hum, around most of europe and australia they were almost exclusively playing stadiums. now i can only provide an australian perspective. and in 1989 australia was where U2 chose to start their comeback tour (aka Lovetown) they did an 8 night stay in sydney and 7 nights in melbourne. coldplay are no where near that.

i'm not saying that coldplay and muse are inferior bands to U2. that would be very hypocritical cos i like cp and muse much more than i like U2. what im saying is that i cant imagine either band reaching the same levels of popularity of U2.

^ His voice has been decaying for the past ten or so years, and although its most noticeable on their new material (like magnificent and no line) he can still surprise by hitting a few old high notes. The highlight of the you-tube rose bowl show for me was actually the way he sang the first half of with or without you. He fell back into a deeper voice that sounded almost as great as it did in the 80s.

I agree strongly with a couple statements here:

1) Clearly, his voice is not what it once was.

2) He can still surprise you.

I thought that during the Rose Bowl show, his voice was patchy at times. I don't like it how he sometimes "talks" some of the lyrics instead of signing them. But the man has been signing for almost 30 years, and it is unrealistic to expect his voice not to decline somewhat. Overall, I will still take live U2 any day of the week. Bono at 80 to 90% of his vocal peak is better than almost anyone else at 100%, and sometimes he still reaches back and blows you away. There are plenty of recent examples to prove it.

Except the show last night sucked. I was unsatisfied with them largely, it became a formulated piece of shit to me. The only good part was Edge. Bono couldn't sing, and Edge showed him up multiple times. Bono didnt play to the crowd at all. Way to show us you love us, his proclaimed favorite city in Canada.

Larry was tired and didnt care. Adam was Adam. I was mad, I could have watched Rose Bowl as it was the EXACT SAME.

I will never spend money on this band again. I now feel happy pirating their music.

Best part of the concert, leaving after Streets and getting home before the concert was over.

Being a bit harsh on Bono. He's still a better singer than most if not all singers in rock music today.

alot of people who went to wembley to see coldplay and U2 said the coldplay show was better for one very simple reason, you could tell it means so much more to them to play in front of 80 000 of their own fans. for U2 selling out a massive football stadium is just another day at the office. yes, im sure they appreciate every moment of it, but the fact that this has become the norm for them is reflected in their performances. i guess at the same time we shouldn't forget that this band has been touring for almost 30 years. they're bound have an off night sometimes.

I don't know what you expected. Most bands work out a core set list and switch up a few songs each night. That's how they do it. I can only think of a few bands that drastically alter their set list night to night. Coldplay are no different.

As for the band, Larry is always aloof while Adam always maintains an even tempered personality. Bono's voice may have been off, but it couldn't have been that bad.

I have heard complaints that the show may be too big and it is hard for the band to connect with the fans. I felt a bit that way myself. But it's the greatest fucking rock band in the last 30 years. You were lucky to even be in the stadium. If you can't at least appreciate that, it is all on you.

Good points.

I know leading up to the show I avoided this thread, atu2.com and u2.com because I wanted the show to be a surprise. I mean it really is kind of your own fault if you follow setlists nightly and come to know what they'll play.

I could see if you went to every second show on the tour how it could have been repetitive. But if it was the only show you saw on the tour, I don't see how you can complain about it being predictable.

And the sound must have been reallllly bad if the youtube broadcast was as good as going :P

Plus you were that guy who leaves sports games and concerts early! haha

I didnt follow the set list. I watched a world first, the greatest band on earth play on YouTube for free. The sound was good, thats the one thing I disagree with people on, where I was at least. I expect a core, I saw Coldplay who didn't mess things up. U2 are above using comfort and lighting cue to not jumble it up a bit. They only have 14 albums to work with opposed to 4.5.

Adam has the flu apparently. Larry was normal to me, from the DVDs I've seen. Bono was off and Edge doesn't have the head mic to be on the ramp more, its so he can save Bono's ass and harmonize with a real voice.

I expected more from them. I enjoyed The Edge. I only leave concerts that I know how are ending and want to beat the rush out. I left night one of Coldplay 30 seconds early, night two I was on the floor for 30 more minutes after the show.

Sporting games, sometimes.

I've seen both U2 and Coldplay in Wembley, both shows as well and I don't really agree about U2 playing a stadium like normal work. You can't compare what meant for Coldplay to play in Wembley to want meant for U2. Wembley is London and Coldplay's home, you should compare how it is for U2 to play at Croke Park, as far as I know from a lot of people who went to see them in Dublin any concert there is uncomparable with any other show of the tour because it's their home :)

I fully intend to with this band from now on. I have been spoiled by Pearl Jam, Rob Thomas and Bryan Adams. A show not coregraphed to the second. A Jeans, T-shirt, go out play on a simple stage, no major lighting and visual effects. One where they can play music they want and aren't tied to their fucking lights.

Yes Coldplay is just as guilty, but they also didnt spend $110 million on a stage and lights. The claw was cool for the BEP and thats about it. U2 need to go back to the music and not lighting cues. If I wanted a show I'd go to Broadway.

I want to see 4 guys play from their hearts, not to generate profit. Coldplay played Wembley with their hearts, U2 did not. U2 played Barcelona with their hearts, U2 did, only because it was a monday for them.

^I feel the exact same way. I thought NLOTH was just ok on the album... LOVED it live. Vertigo and Get On Your Boots are far from my favorite songs, but are reaallllly good live. I do like Elevation, though, live or not. :P

i actually loved NLOTH on 1st listen!

...or maybe it was cos i had the volume up high when it came on, but it definitely left an impact...tho i think as of today, it still has not been released as a single (tho i don't really follow what singles U2 have out, so not very sure on this).

Get On Your Boots i didn't like on 1st listen. still doesn't really get to me as much as the other tracks on the new album. i thought that Magnificent is the more superior track. & i do also like the music video made for I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight. :D

This is getting to be silly. You had a bad experience...I get it already. But to say that they have no heart, and imply that they are hiding behind a stage show, is a joke. Why do you think 90,000 people in every city cram into a stadium to see this band? It's because they are one of the greatest live bands of all time.

I would have phrased it nicer than Dejan, but I agree with his sentiments. If you don't want to go see the band the next time they come around, then don't go. I am positive your seat will be filled by someone else.

Please remove the U2 concert from your "Concerts" list, you don't deserve that honor up in that cheesy list you got there.

People out of Canada and US would give anything to see U2 at a concert in the 360 Tour, so be a little bit appreciated and stop complaining, you lazy ass.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but I love this article. I remember Bono talking about the enormous cost of the PopMart tour, as well. Granted, they will probably reap great profits down the road, but with an overhead like this, it is still taking a huge risk.

U2 has yet to make profit from 360 tour
By Alex Young on September 28th, 2009

Due to a reported $750,000 daily overhead and three $30 million claws, U2 has yet to make a profit on its currently ongoing 360 world tour, despite having already played 32 stadium shows across the U.S. and Europe.

Speaking to Reuters (via Gigwise), the band’s manager Paul McGuinness explained that it wouldn’t be later this year before Bono and Co. begin to see a profit.

The engineering problems are enormous and costly. We had to find a way for it to be aesthetic and figure out a way of doing video,” McGuiness explained. “That cylindrical screen we have — that didn’t exist, we had to get somebody to invent that. We had to design this four-legged thing (the claw) — and build three of them.

He went on to note that even after all debts are paid off, major profits aren’t necessarily a sure thing. “(It won’t) exactly (be) gravy, because whether we’re playing or not, the overhead is about $750,000 daily. That’s just to have the crew on payroll, to rent the trucks, all that. There’s about 200 trucks.. Each stage is 37 trucks, so you’re up to nearly 120 there. And then the universal production is another 50-odd trucks, and there are merchandise trucks and catering trucks.”

Probably, but there is not a whole lot of room for things to go wrong when you are dropping $750,000 per day. Keep in mind, that is NOT just on concert days; it is at all times.
