That may be, but how many illegal downloads?
A-Bomb did leak but people still bought their music 5 years ago...well at least more than now.

and I don't know what the digital sales differences were.

but like Kite said, record sales are meaningless

Prospekt.
31-08-2009, 04:46 AM
They are pretty meaningless.

But I'm just saying No Line sold less.

There was a lot less hype around it for one. No big lead single like Vertigo or whatever. So it makes enough sense.

w1ll1am7
31-08-2009, 04:49 AM
well that's one of the things I like about it, there isn't the song that HAD to be a hit.
and yeah, less hype, but who cares, they are doing what they want.

now we need Songs of Ascent.

Prospekt.
31-08-2009, 04:52 AM
I don't really care how many copies it sold.

It wasn't as well received, but who cares... it's still good music. :)

w1ll1am7
31-08-2009, 04:55 AM
EXACTLY!

as long as the fans like it.

i don't care what a critic says

w1ll1am7
03-09-2009, 10:03 PM
Songs of Ascent is U2's next album according to Bono and it's to be recorded in Vancouver Canada at the end of their tour in October, says Larry's Drum technician.

It's to be a more meditative and spiritual album, says Bono and it's going to have a lead off single, Every Breaking Wave, which was a song they left out of No Line

"Exit" for me, I just love the build up to that frenetic rock storm that edge gets going toward the end of the song. I listened to No Line... again tonight, only 1 track I dislike - Fez. Everything else is brilliant. I especially love Cedars of Lebanon, for me, that's the best closing track they've ever had. Album rankings for now:

1. Joshua Tree
2. Pop
3. How to dismantle an atomic bomb
4. No line on the horizon
5. Achtung Baby
6. All that you can't leave behind
7. Zooropa
8. Passengers

I don't have any of the others yet.

As far as I know, they did not sell standing tickets. I *think* the roof will be open, but I'm not sure. I do know that they are pulling up (I think that's what they do) the hugemongous screen over the field because the claw would not fit with it in its standard place.

I went both nights last week at Giants Stadium. My first time seeing U2 (and Muse! <3) and I'm itching to go to another U2 concert. And Muse for that matter when they do their tour.

I can understand now why so many people spend so much dough on traveling and tickets for U2; once is not enough! It really is something else when you're there in person! Had a fabulous time (and a horrible tan lol)

Here are my pics (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cooldownmama/sets/72157622345639221/) and my videos (http://www.youtube.com/user/oscarhopes) from Giants Stadium.

As for SNL, I watch almost every week and I was really hoping it'd be funny, but it just wasn't. U2 was the saving grace. They played With or Without You also for the audience. I wish they would've shown that.

Fantastic pics and videos! Thanks for sharing. Where were your seats? it looked like you were up high for the pictures, but on the field for the videos. Just wondering because I'm going to be in the upper tier. ;)

and I completely agree about SNL. didn't know they also performed With or Without You... that would have been great to see.

The first night I had seats in the upper tier, first row, right in the middle. The band came in and out through the tunnel right under me. I don't think there's a bad seat in the house, and since you're in the upper tier, you'll be able to see and appreciate the fullness of the Claw and the light effects. It's a totally different, but awesome, view from being on the floor.

The second night I was on the floor. First row of the outer pit, towards Edge's side. Glad I was in that spot because the moving bridges stopped in front of us a few times (as shown by some of my pics :) )

Where are you seeing them? I'm sure you'll have an awesome time!

jenflor
30-09-2009, 06:04 AM
^Sounds awesome! I kinda wish I had gotten GA tickets, but from the looks of it, the claw and video screens should make being up high pretty entertaining anyway. :) I'll be seeing them in Dallas in a couple of weeks.

I'm going with some friends that'll be on the floor... how did that work? Is it just first come, first served in the inner pit, or are those special tickets?

heyyyohhh
01-10-2009, 12:28 AM
Nah, floor tickets aren't 'special tickets'. Yes it's basically a first come first serve deal in getting into the pit. I was one of many floor ticket holders who started lining up outside the stadium in the morning. Someone at the front of the line took down our names and wrote numbers on our wrists so that noone would cut us in line during the day. You wait for a few hours (and get a nasty sunburn, in my case) and when the stadium opens for the floor ticket holders (I think it was 4:30/5 for us at Giants), you RUN or speedwalk as fast as you can to the spot you want. I could've gone into the inner pit, but because I'm so short, I probably would've gotten a painful crick in my neck (the stage was high) by the end of the night if I had tried for front row(people ahead of me beat me to it). Front row of the outer pit was much better for me, I was able to see past the tall people in the inner pit and could see the huge screen better.

The first night of Giants Stadium there was a bit of rain which fortunately went away and didn't turn into a full blown thunderstorm. When it started raining these umbrella things sprouted over Larry's drum set and over Adam and Edge's stuff. So yeah, they'll play through the rain lol

It looks like there could be two new U2 albums coming soon: A follow-up to this year's No Line On The Horizon and another disc based on Bono and The Edge's Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark musical.

Bono and The Edge wrote the music for Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, which will be previewed on Feb. 25 at Los Angeles' Hilton Theatre. U2 told Rolling Stone they have a number of projects they could start working on soon, and The Edge mentioned the Spider-Man album in the conversation.

"It's hard to say [about a Spider-Man album]," he said. "There will be a Spider-Man album, but whether it's us or the cast, that's the sort of thing we're not sure about. There are some amazing tunes."

Bono is extremely keen on the idea of doing a Spider-Man record.

"If we're going to do another rock record, I want to do Spider-Man," he said. "I just haven't talked Adam [Clayton, bass] and Larry [Mullen, Jr., drums] into that."

As for the second possible U2 record, Mullen, Jr. said he thinks the band should focus on unfinished songs from their aborted sessions with producer Rick Rubin (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys) and some material from sessions in Fez, Morocco.

"I think there's a part two of [No Line On The Horizon]," he told the magazine. "That would be my instinct, would be to complete this.

"I think there is slower, meditative stuff [in the unfinished songs], but I think there are other things, as well, and I don't think it will end up being that kind of record. I think it will end up being a mixture of a few different things. I would like to think that we would have a song that would end up on the radio."

Bono also reiterated that the next proper U2 album will be called Songs Of Ascent. It's rumoured it will be a reggae album.

U2 are playing these shows in support of No Line On The Horizon:

Oct. 1 Charlottesville, VA @ Scott Stadium
Oct. 3 Raleigh, NC @ Carter Finlay Stadium
Oct. 6 Atlanta, GA @ Georgia Dome
Oct. 9 Tampa, FL @ Raymond James Stadium
Oct. 12 Dallas, TX @ New Cowboys Stadium
Oct. 14 Houston, TX @ Reliant Stadium
Oct. 18 Norman, OK @ Oklahoma Memorial Stadium
Oct. 20 Phoenix, AZ @ University Of Phoenix
Oct. 23 Las Vegas, NV @ Sam Boyd Stadium
Oct. 25 Pasadena, CA @ Rose Bowl
Oct. 28 Vancouver, BC @ BC Place

I am surprised (almost shocked) and sad to read that, because I do LOVE "Pride (In the Name of Love)" - my second most beloved U2 song after "ONE". I thought that this song was a popular song so I am surprised to read that it has not been played during 9 concerts in a row! And "dfit00". In the setlist "One" is written in the same line as another song. Does it mean that only a small part of "One" was played? :shocked2:

I am surprised to see the number of Encore(s). For a long time U2 had only three encore(s) - "With or Without You" used to be no. 2 (I am 99% sure of that).

U2 is playing in Denmark on the 15 and 16 August 2010, and the tickets were sold out in very few hours. I fear that some of the tickets were bought by people wanting to make a lot of money by selling the tickets at a very high price! Madonna played a concert in Denmark on 11 August 2009, and her concert was not sold-out. Coldplay had not sold out the concert in Herning on 16 August 2009.

Lola! I am glad that you had a great time as I did too!!!!! :D

It was an absolutely incredible show, I had been waiting for them since 1999, and on October 9th that waiting was over. I was able to be in front row center within the inner circle!

Here are the videos that I shot, I hope you like them. I loved Ultraviolet's circular microphone along with Bono's laser jacket.

I blew my concert ticket budget on seeing Coldplay 3 times this year, so I could only swing seated tix... and WAAAAAYYYY up at the top, too. :\ I'm going with some friends who are huuuuge Muse fans and they've got floor tickets. Basically, I'm just excited to be in the room! I'm so excited... Muse/U2 is an awesome combo! Plus, it's at the ridiculously ginormous new Cowboys Stadium, so it'll be cool to check that out, too!

I still cannot believe I made it, I saw freakin' U2! :o

Glad you were at the inner circle.

Ok, I took many pics, but this is what happened:
My brother borrowed me his camera, which I did not know how to use well.

SO...I deleted the 1st 30 pics that I had taken
All the Muse pics and of the beginning of the show were gone :stunned:
I totally freaked out for like a minute, but I had to calm down and enjoy the show, AND just take more pics.

What the heck? I need to see MUSE again now [not that I don't want to] :P

Question: is that you singing on the videos?

Nice! Cowboys Stadium will be awesome, it was so freaking expensive to build and it's so new! Just being there is an experience, so don't feel bad just because you got a nosebleed ticket. Thanks! Yeah, I really don't mind having the nosebleed seats. I actually got to see U2 on the Elevation Tour, and the claw is soooo massive, I'm pretty sure it'll be a good show no matter where I'm sitting! Plus, like you said, with floor tix, you've got to worry about the queue, and I'm coming in from out of town so it'd be difficult to get there early. Anyway, thanks for the good wishes! I'm sure it'll be awesome and I'll come back here with my report! :D

Hey guys, sorry to bump in, but I've got some questions...

1. U2 FINALLY announced they're coming to Belgium, and ticket sale opens coming Saturday. I've waited forever for this news, but I'm really afraid that I won't be able to get tickets. I'm not a member of the U2 fan club, so I have no access to presale. Is anyone of you a member of the club? Is it worth to join it, just to get tickets?

2. The ad mentions tickets for 'the zone'. They are quite expensive (250 €) so I wonder what these are about. Best seats? Anyone knows?

Thanks!

I drove by Reliant Stadium this morning on my way home from work and saw a whole lot of semi trucks parked in the lot next to the stadium. I guess U2's crew is already in Houston starting to build the giant claw for Wednesday's show. Oh and I also saw Reliant staff starting to set up the barriers. I guess they are expecting people to start lining up soon. :stunned:

^Sorry, I don't. I do know that they have two floor sections- an inner and outer pit. don't know if there's a diff in how you get tickets. Also couldn't say about joining the fan club. There are some perks, I know, but it seemed too expensive to really be worth it. I know Rishi (dfit00) was in the inner-circle/pit the other night... He may have more insight!

Red 1 and Red 2 were auctioned off over here. This is the info about them:

Auction package includes access to the (RED) Zones--high profile general admission areas on the field adjacent to the stage runways & access to a special concession & merchandise stand. All winners will be charged a per ticket price equal to their bid per ticket plus any applicable fees when the auction ends. All winners will be contacted by a Tour Rep prior to event date.

A portion of the proceeds will be given in support of (RED) to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. The amounts you pay to purchase tickets/packages may not be tax-deductible by you.

One of the zones also came with a tour of their backstage area, but not a meeting with the band.

Hope that helps.

^Patience, Nancy! :D

the show last night was just... excellent. I'm out of superlatives! Muse opened and they did a fabulous set... absolutely loved them.

I was lucky enough to see U2 back on the Elevation Tour, which I loooooved because All That You Can't Leave Behind is one of my favorite U2 albums. This tour was certainly more grand, but every bit as engaging and wonderful.

They opened with 3 songs from NLOTH, my favorite being Magnificent (though part of me still expects to see Coldplay emerge after it!). My first goosebump moment came when the audience sang the beginning of I Still Haven't Found. Sooo cool! Other highlights for me: Stuck in a Moment (acoustic). I was never a huge fan of this song on the album, but it was really, really lovely as they performed it last night. Just Bono and Edge on guitar singing background vocals. loved it. 'No Line on the Horizon' (the song) was also really, really great live. Another favorite was City of Blinding Lights. I just love that song! While he was singing it, Bono pulled a young teenager out of the audience and walked with him around the stage. That was pretty cool. The audience was really great, too, I thought. Tons of people up and dancing to every song. It was a great atmosphere. The only thing I was not particularly fond of was the remix of Crazy Tonight... I really like that song on the album and it just didn't have the same impact done as a remix, I thought.

The show was in the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium, which was a really impressive building. The giant screens used for the games were off and pulled way up high to accomodate the top of the claw. The roof was closed, which made the audience seem even more massive than it was. I think I read in the Dallas paper they estimated around 75 thousand attended last night. The only negative thing I heard was that the sound in the top tiers was a little muddled. I was supposed to have been way up there, but ended up in a mid-level suite, thanks to some friends with connections. That was awesome.... and they sounded great from where I was. :)

Oh, and Muse, too!

THANKS FOR YOUR REVIEW, JEN - IT WAS GOOD TO HEAR THAT IT HAS BEEN A REALLY MAGNIFICENT EXPERIENCE. And thanks for posting the SETLIST.

^Yeah, the stadium was incredible. Just huge beyond anything and really quite nice. The old Texas Stadium was rather depressing... this is much nicer (well, as nice as a stadium can be). We got to be in a suite in the 300 level, so we got to see the ultra-posh lounge areas where they serve Dom Perignon and Green Chile Kobe Burgers :P The suites were killer. Very, very cool. and it was all just HUGE.

Edited to add photo of said ultra-posh lounge/bar:

Wow the Cowboy's jumbo HD screen is as big as U2's claw stage. :shocked2:

jenflor
14-10-2009, 08:10 PM
^Yeah, that jumbotron is immense. Apparently, the claw is supposed to be set up in the middle of the field, to allow more of an in-the-round feel, but the screen was too large, so it had to be put to one side. Not sure how true that is, but that's what I heard. Was also reading some reviews of the show that said the seats in the upper-tier (the 400s) had HORRIBLE sound. People talked about leaving 4 songs into the set because the bass reverb and echoes were so bad. We totally lucked out with our friends getting us better seats!

I kinda thought sound would suck up in the rafters. I mean it's a football stadium, not a concert hall. I am trying to decide on how early to go. Traffic and parking at Reliant sucks balls.

They came out to Space Oddity. Asked how we liked their "space ship". Said they went out to NASA yesterday and that lots of NASA peeps were in the house. When I got there the roof was closed, but after Muse's set I noticed it was open. Not sure when that happened. The top disco ball was almost touching the roof. It must look amazing from out side the stadium, crazy lights flashing. :laugh3:

Got tickets for their show in Munich next year in September!
It's been quite a mess getting them as the server of the site which sold the tickets went down almost immediately when the presale kicked off and all the three German shows were almost completely sold out after an hour or so... :stunned: I actually had to beg my mum for ordering a ticket for me as I wasn't at home that day and she managed to get one seat and one ticket for the standing area... Now I only need to make a decision about which ticket I'll keep. ;)
The only problem is that I don't even know where on earth I'll be next year in September as I'll have finished school by then, but I guess I'll somehow make it to Munich that day. :D

Before the show, the roof was closed. Was nice because it was in the 90's that day and this allowed for them to pump in the air conditioning.

NO, unfortunately not. I was not so much into U2 before in 2005 I read an article about Bob Geldof and understood that it was BONO who persuaded Bob Geldof to arrange the "Make Poverty History" concerts. Without Bono's persuasive power, no "Make Poverty History" concerts. I thought: Bono once again - he seems to be here, there and everywhere - showing us that he really cares. And in that second these thoughts went through my head, I was caught. So my interest in U2 and their music goes via BONO and his political activism. U2 last visited Denmark on 31 May 2005 (a little too early for my interest - and the tickets were quickly sold out also in 2005.

By the way, a great column by Bono in the New York Times today: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/18/opinion/18bono.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

If you choose this, make sure to review the layout for your show so you don't get stuck behind one of the claw legs. If you have the money I would recommend one of the red zones. You are standing, but area is very limited, so only a small amount of people are there. It's close and you can come and go pretty easy from what I saw. Zone 1 people also got a tour of the stage! I could see them in small groups up by the drums getting their picture taken.

I was glad for this voting opportunity and voted for a host of favourite songs from this decade. :)

I voted for 7 COLDPLAY songs (VIVA LA VIDA, CLOCKS, FIX YOU, IN MY PLACE, YELLOW, SCIENTIST and SPEED OF SOUND) and 9 U2 songs (ONE together with Mary J. Blige, MAGNIFICENT, I'll Go Crazy, WITH or WITHOUT You, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, BEAUTIFUL DAY, Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of , Walk On and The saints are coming (together with Green Day - voted for Wake Me Up When September Ends, and Boulevard of Broken Dreams), Killer's Human, and Robbie Williams' Eternity, Feel and She's the One.

But I really hope for VIVA LA VIDA or CLOCKS as FINAL WINNERS

U2's ONE is not quite as good with Mary J. Blige - IMO. I voted for it, but I prefer the version where Bono is sitting at a table smoking and singing this song.

The Saints Are Coming was dire! But With Or Without you?? Two decades late AbsoluteRadio!

Magnificent is their best single of the decade by miles!

It's nice somebody on here is looking forward to it. :P
