Honorary knighthood for U2's Bono

U2 frontman Bono is being awarded an honorary knighthood by the Queen, the British Embassy in Dublin has said.

The singer, whose real name is Paul Hewson, has been given the honour for "his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work," it said.

Prime Minister Tony Blair congratulated him, telling the singer in a letter: "You have tirelessly used your voice to speak up for Africa."

The 46-year-old will receive the honour in Dublin early in the new year.

British ambassador David Reddaway will conduct the ceremony.

The embassy said the agreement of the Irish government was sought and granted for the Dublin-born singer to be honoured.

A statement on the band's website said the singer, who has lobbied Western leaders to increase aid to developing countries and cancel Third World debt, was "very flattered" to receive the award.

It added that he hoped it opened doors for his campaigning work against extreme poverty in Africa.

Pressure on leaders

Because he is not a British national, he will not be able to use the title "Sir". The honour is the same as that conferred upon fellow Dubliner Bob Geldof in 1986.

Other recipients of honorary knighthoods include Microsoft founder Bill Gates, singer Placido Domingo and film director Steven Spielberg.

In his letter to the singer, Mr Blair thanked Bono for his work in the run up to 2005's G8 summit, which had a focus on African poverty.

Alongside Geldof, Bono organised the Live 8 concerts to coincide with the summit, and increase the pressure on Western leaders to take action.

Bono has lobbied George Bush on the issue of Third World debt
"I know from talking to you how much these causes matter to you. I know as well how knowledgeable you are about the problems we face and how determined you are to do all you can to help overcome them," he said.

'Invaluable role'

"I want personally to thank you for the invaluable role you played in the run-up to the Gleneagles G8 summit. Without your personal contribution, we could not have achieved the results we did.

"So thank you and I look forward to continuing to work together to maintain momentum on Africa, and ensure leaders around the world meet the promises they have made."

In 2003, Bono was presented with France's Legion D'Honneur by President Jacques Chirac, while in 2005 he was voted Time magazine's person of the year for his work promoting justice and equality, along with Bill and Melinda Gates.

Last year, he admitted that at one stage, he was worried his commitment to the cause might force him to leave U2.

In 2006 he was named the most influential pop star of the past 25 years by music network MTV, and in February U2 won five Grammy Awards, including song of the year for Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own, and album of the year for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

U2: From joshua trees to palm trees
Billboard (http://www.billboard.com/), December 31, 2006
Jonathen Cohen

You can't blame U2's concert promoter for wondering just how big the band's Vertigo world tour could have been if it had simply kept on playing.

After all, not one ticket went unsold for the 131 shows on the trek, which began March 28, 2005, in San Diego and wrapped December 9 in front of 47,000 fans at Honolulu's Aloha Stadium.

Having been on the road in fits and starts since March 2005, U2 was clearly in a celebratory mood in Hawaii, as Bono danced onstage with a woman from the crowd during "Mysterious Ways" and even pulled a lucky guy out of the audience to play piano with the band during "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses." Whether waving the American flag high above his head amid opener "City of Blinding Lights" or writhing on the stage blindfolded for "Bullet the Blue Sky," the frontman was holding nothing back.

When all was said and done, Vertigo clocked in as the second-highest grossing tour of all time: $389 million from an astonishing audience of 4,619,021, second only to the Rolling Stones' concurrent A Bigger Bang trek, which may continue into 2007, and has grossed more.

"I sometimes try and visualize, what would be the universe?" promoter Arthur Fogel told Billboard. "In other words, what if you could just play and play and play? We sold over four-and-a-half million tickets on this tour, but we still underplayed basically everywhere we've gone."

Vertigo visited arenas in North America through late May 2005, then played stadiums in Europe throughout that summer. In the fall, it was back to North America for a run that included six shows at Toronto's Air Canada Center and six at New York's Madison Square Garden.

February and March took U2 to South America, which was originally to be followed by dates in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Those shows, however, were postponed until the fall due to a serious illness that struck within the immediate family of a band member. Details have never been publicly disclosed.

Getting Vertigo back on track was the final hurdle for Fogel. He and U2 manager Paul McGuinness say they're in contact all the time, even a year before the first fan has filed into a venue.

"As the record develops, the production develops," McGuinness said. "And depending on when the record is finished, we have an imaginary start date. That's subject to change, but the thinking about the production is always simultaneous with the making of the album."

The Vertigo stage set featured an ellipse-shaped extension that allowed band members to travel far into the general-admission crowd on the floor. It required 30 semi trucks to get from place to place, according to stage manager Rocko Reedy. On a good day, it took two-and-a-half hours to assemble, but that duration could nearly double depending on weather and venue configurations. After being loaded post-show onto the trucks, the stage was packed onto three 747s to travel to the next venue.

Early in the tour, U2 performed in front of seven see-through LED curtains, onto which images and patterns were projected. Later, a giant, super high-tech LED screen was used instead to form the backdrop.

"All the stuff we use is always serial number 001," Reedy said. "The first time they create this type of technology, it's U2 that uses it. Then everybody else under the sun goes out and gets it, so we just have to come up with something new."

That said, Vertigo has not been without its share of drama. The tour got off to a rocky start after a disastrous presale for paid members of u2.com in January 2005, when demand far exceeded the ticket allotment, prompting shut-out fans to blast management and even band members themselves on Internet forums.

"The demand was artificially stimulated because, quite honestly, a lot of ticket scalpers had joined u2.com planning to trade the tickets," McGuinness said. "It was clear very early those tickets would have a higher resale value than face value. We got caught by that, and we certainly underestimated the demand that would arise through the fan club. We did the best we could to meet it. But we'll be a little more careful next time."

Then, in the wake of the Asia-Pacific postponements, Fogel spent months dealing with insurance issues. "That process took a very long time and was very difficult in complex, but ultimately resulted favorably," he says. "That probably was a much greater challenge than the actual logistics of bringing the production and personnel back together.

"We had a few venue issues (rescheduling) in Japan, because originally we were playing outdoors at Yokohama Stadium," he added. "Given we were now in early December, the weather is such that we had to then look to go indoors. So, we had to basically refund 60,000 tickets and then resell for three shows at an arena."

But, to the surprise of nobody, the fans were still right there waiting to attend the makeup dates. "In Australia, even though we were postponing the shows by six months or so, almost no customers asked for a refund," McGuinness said. And indeed, the time off allowed U2 to rejigger the tour set list, as well as record "The Saints Are Coming" and the new song "Window in the Skies" with producer Rick Rubin. Both were released on the compilation U218 Singles in November.

While it may have been tempting to entertain adding still more shows to the itinerary after the fall leg, McGuinness said this was "a logical point to stop. We're obviously aware we could go on and on and on, but selling out (venues) is actually more important to us than the gross."

So where does the U2 go from here? The first destination is the recording studio, sometime in 2007, with an eye on releasing a new album by the end of the year. McGuinness predicted the next tour would then begin in 2008.

"All I can say is it will be completely different the next time, but it will be big," he said. "I think our audience expects very big productions. We've become good at doing that, and I think it is part of U2's reputation." The band may even experiment with commercially releasing select concerts as downloads shortly after their completion. "That's something we're exploring," McGuinness acknowledged. "In the future there will be more what we call 'band-to-fan activity."'

I love listening to the demos. . . . you get a real understanding of how they craft a song. . . . the Achtung Baby demos were the best, you can see how one demo song become three songs, and how they evolve. . . . I can understand the band not wanting them stolen and such . . but they are just so interesting. . . . in U2 by U2 they talk about recording all their practise and recording sessions . . . I can't help thinking PLEASE let me loose in the vault! but then Edge talks about if they are in a plane crash they want to the tapes burnt!!! arrgh. . . look at the interesting stuff that surfaces from the Beatles! anyway. . I do go on . . . . . . I should stick to reading the lyrics about God.. .. .. or was that look at pics of Larry Mullen Jnr. with out a shirt. . . . not .. .. . I have got some of the ATYCLB & HTTAAB demos they are great, even the Golden Eye demos are interesting to listen to . . .and no one would have ever heard of "Be there" if it was not for these demos being leaked. . . . I recently got the Joshua Tree demos as well off U2mp3s.com as well . . mad for it!

And grammys matter, or what?

I mean, I guess I got to thank them because somehow a few of my favourite bands love them and said without them they'd never wanted to make music.

I don't get why they are special at all. If I listen to them I hear nice pop songs with mediocre lyrics . Then I have to think of what a stuck up arse Bono is and have to turn it off.
Also their songs get annoying so easily.

Why do I think Chris Martin is nice? I've never met him, I've never talked to him, I don't know him. So I don't. And still I think it.
He's so greasy and 'good'. I mean, I'm sure his intentions are good and he's no bad human but he's so spaced out.

Pop songs?...well maybe some songs coming from the last two albums, or maybe it depends on what concept of rock you're into

To me Where the streets have no name, I will follow, Like a song, Until the end of the world, The fly, Exit, Bullet the blue sky, The Electric co, even Vertigo are rock

And about mediocre lyrics, I just give you one which is not mediocre at all (at least for me):

In the howling wind comes a stinging rain
See it driving nails into the souls on the tree of pain
From the firefly, a red orange glow
See the face of fear running scared in the valley below

Sky
Sky
Bullet the blue sky / Sky
Bullet the blue sky / Sky
Bullet the blue / Sky
Bullet the blue / Sky

In the locust wind comes a rattle and hum
Jacob wrestled the angel and the angel was overcome
You plant a demon seed, you raise a flower of fire
See them burning crosses
See the flames higher and higher

Sky
Sky
Bullet the blue sky / Sky
Bullet the blue sky / Sky
Bullet the blue / Sky
Bullet the blue / Sky

This guy comes up to me
His face red like a rose on a thorn bush
Like all the colours of a royal flush
And he's peeling off those dollar bills
Slapping them down
One hundred, two hundred
And I can see those fighter planes
And I can see those fighter planes

Across the mud huts where the children sleep
Through the alleys of a quiet city street
You take the staircase to the first floor
Turn the key and slowly unlock the door
As a man breathes into a saxophone
And through the walls you hear the city groan
Outside it's America
Outside it's America
(America)

Across the field you see the sky ripped open
See the rain pour through the gaping wound
Pounding the women and children
Who run
Into the arms
Of America

you can also learn some history out of this ;)

but again if you don't like them I can't make you change your mind, you will stay in your opinion and I will stuck with mine

I've met him... he's not.

;)

I also have a close friend who has spent a considerable amount of time with the man (that's all I can say, I've promised I won't say more.... so don't ask) and he's the best man you could know. There are no walls around the man, no allusions to something else. He's pure and real. What the media makes of him that shapes public opinion is another thing. The fact that he's a great person in private, as well as to us fans when we stand with him on the street outside a venue, that makes him a good person.

(please don't get me wrong at all, I love ya, but I know you're a Peter D. fan just like me, thought a fan of his would be less likely to judge someone based on nothing.... sorry I'm just so defensive of Bono.)

And in my opinion, these are probably the greatest lyrics ever... they just describe everything about me, and yeah. I could never consider these mediocre. Ever. Even if Fall Out Boy wrote them :laugh4:

'Acrobat'
Don't believe what you hear, don't believe what you see
If you just close your eyes you can feel the enemy.
When I first met you girl, you had fire in your soul.
What happened t'your face of melting snow
Now it looks like this!
And you can swallow or you can spit
You can throw it up, or choke on it
And you can dream, so dream out loud
You know that your time is coming round
So don't let the bastards grind you down.

No, nothing makes sense, nothing seems to fit.
I know you'd hit out if you only knew who to hit.
And I'd join the movement
If there was one I could believe in
Yeah, I'd break bread and wine
If there was a church I could receive in.
'Cause I need it now.
To take the cup
To fill it up, to drink it slow.
I can't let you go.

And I must be an acrobat
To talk like this and act like that.
And you can dream, so dream out loud
And don't let the bastards grind you down.

What are we going to do now it's all been said?
No new ideas in the house, and every book's been read.

Just one comment about Chris Martin vs. Bono - I think all you have to do is listen to interviews with each of them to see which one is intelligent, well spoken, modest and an amazing person. He wouldn't have access to all the world leaders for extended periods if he wasn't. The other one comes across like a buffoon a lot of the time, making dumb jokes and really not having much worthwhile to say. (I'll let you figure out which one is which!!) Love Man and a Woman, sometimes I'll listen to it just once and it'll stick in my mind for the rest of the day.

I think if it weren't for my constant listening to 'War' when I went to Ireland the first time I wouldn't care so much about U2, they'd just be "one of those bands I like" instead of the definative one for my life :laugh4: I remember listening to 'Drowning Man' as we drove to and from the Cliffs of Moher and..... it was just almost a religious moment. Beautiful song.

The Refugee is my favorite, though, no one seems to like that one either! I used to dance to it a lot haha

MrMagpie
27-01-2007, 04:42 PM

I think it's a really dated song, probably why I love it. Like it's definately different from everything else. People who say all U2 songs sound the same, yeah well ok why don't you compare Refugee to I have no idea, 'One' or 'With Or Without You' completely different. And yes, still the same band.

u2 has gone through SO many changes it's unbelievable. They're a different band on each album, so that's pretty much why I can't understand why anyone thinks that they have the same sound all the time. Obviously have never listened to the music. ;)

Psh.

Anyhoo, haha I love how your least favorites are still great! :laugh4: Same for me, like there are songs that I just don't listen to as much anymore, or ever had, but I still love them?

Plus the drum part of the Refugee is just great. Yeap.

MrMagpie
27-01-2007, 04:55 PM
Yeah the thing with U2 is no matter what they do there is always this underlying factor that makes them sound like U2. But Boy you have songs like I Will Follow and Electric Co. which are completely different from October and Tomorrow.

And then the whole Unforgettable Fire album is just so different from their first 3 albums. Its just Bono improvising lyrics. I read most of the songs were much longer than what is on the album but they had to trim them down.

Then you get to the 90s era, those albums are so much different than the 80s stuff, more electronic, bigger guitars, more distortion. And then you get to the 00s and you have a U2 sound unlike their previous 20 years.

People who say that U2 sound the same every album obviously haven't listened to every album.

an_cat
27-01-2007, 05:07 PM
Or haven't listened to ONE album! Because I mean..... There are songs that sound completely different from each other on all of the albums... But they always do remain themselves.

Heard the same thing about 'Fire', yeap. haha, I love reading the stories about the making of that album, interesting definately... Makes the album that much more dynamic.

Agreed to everything else you've said. I mean comparing Achtung Baby to October is impossible. Seriously, completely different band. It's incredible.

MrMagpie
27-01-2007, 05:16 PM

I agree with all of your comments! I've only recently become a U2 fan (I really have NO IDEA how I didn't notice them all these years!!!) I had heard their radio hits of course, but I didn't have a clue about the depth of their talent. I picked up a copy of "Rattle & Hum" DVD on sale about 1 1/2 years ago and was just blown away. So I downloaded the "Complete U2" from iTunes - and I was hooked completely. I also am absolutely amazed at the variety of music they've made. I can honestly say that I don't think there's a song they've done that I don't like! I've really enjoyed downloading their concerts/bootlegs and stuff and even went to my first U2 concert in Honolulu this year. I just hope they keep on for many more years so I can make up for lost time!

Well.... not exactly, since we had to get the GA tickets off ebay since it was after it had sold out and just a week before the show! :laugh4: :uhoh: But after that, and after she realized they're the cheapest, she says next time they tour that is ALL we're going to do.

Fine with me! :D haha my mom rocks! She loves U2 now, it's great. Everytime I go in her room I see her listening to my itunes (on her computer) doing her bills and it's set to U2 :laugh4:

wow:shocked3:
imo nothing can be compared with U2,they are simply the best(best songs+videos),every album is diferrent and so is every song on the album
first three albums are totallly super, addictive
war and unforgettable fire are two of their best,80s stuff is unbelievable and Bono was the best singer in 80s!

90s stuff is totally opposite of the 80s,but still awesome and 00s are so brutal good, better than 90s,something between 80s and 90s

Where di you get Boston dvd?

Denise
28-01-2007, 03:32 PM
I used Live at Slane Castle to convince my mom to let me get GA tickets to the October gig. That made her a fan! :laugh4:
I used that one too with a friend of mine...well actually it was him who asked me to lend him all my U2 DVDs, and he said that was the best one, it should have been a fantastic concert, well I'm sure it was

awwwwwwwwww..I want to see them in Ireland :bigcry: :bigcry:

GA really is the best - my daughter and I lined up at 6:30 p.m. the day before the show in Honolulu (already almost 500 people ahead of us!) We had a great time overnight - met people from all over the world. And we ended up front row in front of Adam's B stage - my daughter actually touched Bono's shoulder as he was getting up onto stage! In my family its me that gets my kids hooked!!

I got the DVD at Music World. It cost $45 too! Usually DVDs only cost around $20-25. But I guess it was worth it. I love it. I'm starting to get a little sick of how many DVDs they are putting out now. I want new stuff!

You can't go to a U2 show and be seated, it is not right, it has happened to me twice, Sydney 98, and Sydney last year, wrong, just wrong. . . being at the front is THE only place!, Both the NZ 93 shows, I was infron of Adam, 89 in Auckland I was infront of Mr the Edge.. .. .. and of course Auckland last year I was in the Elipse!.. OH HELL YEAH! All fun and games!

an_cat
29-01-2007, 12:58 AM
Yes! It MUST be GA! or: front row right on the side, which I had twice. My last gig was way out in the nosebleeds, but at that point I had really seen them from every angle, so that was kind of cool? But GA is always the best, that's all I can say about it! lining up early is the price you pay, but I do that so often anyways, you just bring a book, a blanket, some music and make some friends!

And U2 lines are just awesome :laugh4:

From www.atu2.com

" Our friends at U2achtung.com (http://www.u2achtung.com/01/news/#2559) have a tip from Universal Music that PopMart: Live from Mexico City will finally get a DVD release this year. The reported date is April 2nd (i.e., April 3rd in N. America) and the DVD is said to come in two formats, a single DVD and a dual DVD, just like last year's Zoo TV Sydney release"

That is great news! Probably that instead of an album in 2007 though, I'm not sure.

Where would I be able to find just about every U2 single being shared? I've been looking for awhile but to no avail. You know how in the Coldplay Multimedia people share basically every single of Coldplay (includes b-sides and live versions). Is there a forum somewhere that does the same for U2? Please help? Oh and my other random thought:

Don't you think it would have been nice if they put the Edge on the single cover for the Saints are Coming instead of Bono? I mean if they put out a single with the proceeds going to the ONE campaign I know for a fact Bono would be on the front, not Larry, Adam, or the Edge.

On Saturday April 21st, 2007 the "Icons of Music" auction will take place at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York.

The event is set up to benefit Music Rising, the organization started by U2 guitarist The Edge, producer Bob Ezrin, and Gibson Guitar CEO Henry Juszkiewicz to aid musicians who lost equipment and other essentials during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The live and online auction, hosted by Julien's Auctions, will kick off at 5pm Eastern and will offer around 200 pieces of music memorabilia, including The Edge's 1975 Cream Gibson Les Paul guitar of which the axeman states "I wanted that Steve Jones 'Never Mind The Bollox' sound, so I got the same guitar right down to the color. I never could get that sound, but I found a bunch of songs in this instrument, and have used it extensively ever since, on tour and in the studio."

Other items in the auction include sunglasses worn by John Lennon, a Janis Joplin seven-page handwritten love letter to her boyfriend written by Janis Joplin, a Jimi Hendrix guitar, hand written lyrics from Bruce Springsteen, an Elvis Presley early recording contract, Kurt Cobain's MTV Video Music Award for Nirvana, a Paul McCartney hand-painted Epiphone Texan Guitar, a saxophone signed by President Bill Clinton to be personalized to winning bidder, a Rolling Stones' signed Gibson Les Paul Music Rising Guitar, Emporia Armani (Project Red) concert-worn sunglasses from Bono, a Tom Tom drum donated by Larry Mullen and a concert and studio-played bass guitar donated by Adam Clayton. There will be additional memorabilia from Madonna, Ray Charles, KISS, James Brown, Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, The Beatles, Jim Morrison, Cher, The Grateful Dead and much more is also included.

For those interested in seeing some of the memorabilia up close and personal portions of the offerings will be on view at the following exhibits:

Los Angeles: (March 27-29 @ The Beverly Hilton),

Dublin, Ireland: (April 3-6 @ The Clarence Hotel)

London: (April 11-13 @ The Hard Rock Cafe)

New York: (April 16-20 @ The Hard Rock Cafe)

More concrete details of the event will be posted on March 30th on Musicrising.org, U2.com, Gibsonfoundation.org, Gibson.com, Juliensauctions.com and Hardrock.com.

We are excited to announce that Bono will be making an appearance Wednesday night on behalf of ONE urging the millions of Americans watching the show to join us in the fight against extreme poverty. Bono will meet with the Idol contestants to talk with them about ONE and the difference your advocacy is making in the lives of the world's poorest people. The Idol contestants will also perform "American Prayer," a song written by Bono and Dave Stewart about the AIDS emergency in Africa.
