Fran Healy was interviewed on 6 music tonight and he announced everything regarding the new album. He said it was called "The Boy With No Name" and it's out on May 7th and the new single is out on 23rd April, he didn't say, but I assume it's going to be Big Chair. Oh he also mentioned that the duet with KT Tunstall isn't on the album, but hopefully it will be a b-side.:D

i cannot wait. travis have been away for far too long. big chair is a grower, fantastic, and i'm just listening to closer now, and i am loving that, 1st time through. they're not going for the grand effect, it's a bit twee, almost belle and sebastian esque in places, but thats good. in my books anyway.

i love the production on the two tracks i've heard so far. nigel godrich comes up trumps again. nx

New Babies are amazing and inspiring. Our wee boy is nearly 5 months old. I haven't played him any Travis music yet. That could be seen as child abuse in some parts. Hahaaa... I have, however, been playing him guitar and singing made up songs that seem to be getting a good reaction. Cue an anomalous vocal gobbldigook 6th album ( the one after next). called Goo. “I think there’s always been a place in people’s hearts for us,"" says Travis drummer Neil Primrose (far left)

IT'S been more than three and a half years since their last album, but Travis - the band who Chris Martin recently admitted "invented" Coldplay - are about to release their highly-anticipated fifth record, The Boy With No Name.

One of Britain's best-loved bands, the four-piece have been rehearsing in a studio behind Pentonville Prison, Caledonian Road, Islington, ahead of an intimate showcase gig at Koko, where they will premiere the new material ahead of a nationwide tour in May.

Lead singer and Crouch Ender Fran Healy, drummer Neil Primrose and bassist Dougie Payne are clearly quietly proud of their new album.

"I'm not going to sit here and say this is the best record of the past 20 years," says Healy, "But I think we've made a really good album. It feels like we're back."

Dougie adds: "Song for song, I think it's stronger than anything we have done. Frannie just seemed to be completely inspired."

This is quite a statement from a band who are used to headlining festivals and have sold millions of albums - their 1999 breakthrough The Man Who was bought by one in eight British households.

"I thought, 'I need to live,'" explains Fran, "My best songs have always been drawn from experience. So I decided to take time off to be with people I care about, go on holiday, hang out and get away from the intensity of the music business."

He adds: "After a time of feeling stuck, we feel like we can do anything. We went through dark places. But we've found our muse."

The songs for The Boy With No Name came about over a two-year period of intense bursts of activity with weeks or months off in between, while Fran became a father (the album title comes from the weeks of indecision before calling his son Clay) and the band kept their hand in playing the odd show - 2005's highlight was

either playing Live 8, headlining the Isle Of Wight Festival or Fran's solo performance at the annual Crouch End Carol Concert, he says.

The 11 tracks on the album are impressively consistent, picked from a total of 42.

Neil adds: "Some of the stuff was weird and interesting, more b-side material, other bits are very good, but the way the songs turned out, this is the best collection of songs that seemed to fit together.

"There are three or four other really good tracks which seem to lend themselves to something a bit different for the next record.

"They are more early-REM-sounding. The lynchpin song was Closer and a couple of others. They are very, I suppose, classic Travis, but all the layering and texturing we have got into and they way we produce ourselves now have sort of informed the whole process.

"We have raised the bar for ourselves. There does seem to be a shortage of decent songwriting going on. There seems to be a lot of good music, but there's nothing that's got any substance to it.

"There are classic bands and new bands coming up which are good, but there's so much that's so easily attainable that stuff doesn't seem to stay in your head as long.

"I think our attention span has gone down as well. I think it's time we all sat down instead of downloading this and that, and listened to a whole album, read a whole book, watched a whole movie.

"I think we've tried to make an album that engages you, and you want to listen to the whole thing. It's a 45-minute thing, you can't just dip in and out of it."

Coldplay's Chris Martin may have credited Travis with "inventing" his band, but now they are superstars in their own right - and the competition in the charts.

"It's funny, they're all doffing their caps to us and saying you inspired us - and that's great," says Neil.

"And at the same time they are the competition, but I think with this new record we've come back in our own way, and I think there's always been a place in people's hearts for us.

"We've never going be the cool, flash-in-the-pan band, we're in it for the long haul. We're a proper band."

* Travis' comeback single Closer is released on April 23, followed by The Boy With No Name on May 7.

Hahahaha! I am listening to Electioneering and that reminds me of a conversation I once had on atease. It was about this Pinkpopp version of Electioneering in which Thom Yorke looked like Clay Aiken, that idol guy... Hahaha, anyway.

And then we started making fun of the name Clay. Or at least I did. :laugh3:

Anyway. Thanks a lot for the article. I listened to some Travis b-sides today and it was very refreshing. We are monkeys, Baby one more time, Hazy shades of gold, No cigar. :laugh3: Awesome.

A widescreen sweep of emotive and melodic indie rock - 'Closer' the new single from Travis is available for download from the 9th April and goes on general release on April 23rd 2007.

The lead single from their forthcoming album The Boy With No Name, 'Closer' is the song says Fran "which bred the rest of the album"; an arena sized sound that can still whisper its secrets into the ear of each listener.

Available for download, on CD single and 7" vinyl, with track listing details as follows:

CD (digipack) Closer / The Day Today / Closer - video
7" Part 1 (Gatefold) Closer / The Great Unknown
7" Part 2 (single bag) Closer / This Love

Travis have just returned from filming the promotional video in Los Angeles. Set in a supermarket, with each band member playing a store employee, Fran - clad in a bear suit as the store's mascot - breaks into song, shoppers and their trolleys engage in a synchronised dance routine and drummer Neil dances across the aisles with a customer, until the store's manager - played by long standing Travis fan Ben Stiller - breaks up the fun.

Three years on from their last outing 12 Memories, the imminent release of their new album has brought with it a palpable excitement in the Travis camp and a genuine enthusiasm for a return to the road. Having long been regarded as the trailblazers for the emotionally engaging pop anthem, they've clearly re-discovered what made us love them in the first place.

A belting collection of bittersweet pop songs from the band Chris Martin says, "invented" Coldplay, The Boy With No Name was produced by Travis and Nigel Godrich, and will be released on Independiente on 7th May.

"Song for song, I honestly think it's stronger than anything we've done", says Dougie Payne. "Frannie just seemed to be completely inspired"

AFTER more than three years shying away from the spotlight, Scottish boys TRAVIS are back.

The quartet - famed for hits Turn, Driftwood and Flowers in the Window - played to a packed house at London’s Koko, giving fans a taste of what’s next in store for the indie rockers.

And although FRAN HEALY and co do what they do well, there was little in the way of progress or new direction.

Classic tunes like Sing and encore choice Why Does It Always Rain On Me went down a treat, while new single Closer was also met with a generous helping of fan admiration.

But there’s just something about this band that you can’t quite sink your teeth into and feel passionate about.

Their familiarity is somewhat dreary, and when Fran shouts: "It's good to be back!" it's hard to share his joy.

Just as Ray Quinn is likely to be your gran’s favourite, a Travis CD would sit nicely in the middle of your mum’s collection.

With such fierce competition from similar bands like Coldplay and Keane, these Brit winners should step up their game and try something quirkier.

Their new songs didn’t offer anything we haven’t heard before.

Their catchy melodies and sing-along choruses may strike a chord with current fans, but it’s yet to be seen whether they’ll entice any new ones on board.

Well, the new stuff is definitely better than most of 12 Memories, so that's good.

I don't think they will become anywhere near as popular again as they were back in 1999/2000, but the new album really should be heard by many, many people. They deserve it. Travis have still 'got it'.

Fran Healy said Travis has a "a power set" planned for their upcoming Coachella appearance and was looking forward to sharing a stage with The Arcade Fire.
"I've seen them many times. It's going to be good to see them in a festival where they'll definitely come to life."

Question: Is Travis raring to get back out on the road?
Answer: Yeah, we've got plenty of energy because of the break. We're going to run as far as it will go. Who knows? We'll either be here the same time next year or not. I'm definitely much more inspired and still writing. It's just nice to be back.

Q: The new album comes out next month. Have you received any early feedback on it yet?
A: We've already put the songs on our MySpace site. We're all kind of new to MySpace. We only started in earnest about 14 weeks ago. No one probably knows we have a MySpace or that we still exist. We've been away for such a long time. But one by one, they're coming. ... We also keep up the MySpace ourselves. We don't get someone to do it. We put a new track on every week for the first eight or nine and the reaction was overwhelming.

Q: What prompted the long wait between studio albums?
A: We needed to make a really, really strong recording. The only way you can do that is not really getting involved in the business. You need a big invisible sign on the door that says, "No entry to anyone in a suit and comfy shoes, i.e. the record company." Dougie said, "You've got to stand up to live before you sit down to write."

Q: I just saw the music video for "Closer," which was shot out here in an Eagle Rock market. How did you like wearing a chipmunk costume?
A: It gave me power. It was very hot, but I wasn't going to bail. That was the most fun we've had apart from the "Sing" video when we had the food fight.

Q: That was done at an old Pasadena mansion.
A: Yeah, we always like coming to Los Angeles, because it's where they make movies. Always going to be a cut above the rest.

Q: Actor Ben Stiller, a friend and fan of the band, makes a cameo in "Closer" as the market manager.
A: I thought, "Ben would be perfect for this." So I emailed him and we did it during a free evening. The shop was still open when we started and all these customers were looking at Ben, going, "Is that really him?"

Q: Back in January, Coldplay's Chris Martin told BBC Radio 1 listeners that Travis "invented my band and lots of others" like Keane and Snow Patrol. What did you think after hearing about that?
A: It was really nice of Chris to say that. When we did "The Man Who," I remember an interview with the NME, which went really well. Afterward, the guy stopped the tape and said, "You know, this is a great record, but it's commercial suicide." I was like, "That's not what I want to hear." It was so incongruent with what was musically going on at the time. Then it went on to sell like 6 million albums (worldwide). That created a playing field for bands who did similar things to go and have similar success.

Yeah it is a great song too. You would think something like that, a song with another star, would be a single. Perhaps it's going to be a non album single with KT Tunstall or maybe just a B side.

The near death of drummer Neil Primrose almost marked the end of the stellar Scottish indie rock band Travis.

It was 2002 when Primrose jumped headfirst into a shallow swimming pool, breaking his neck and almost dying due to spinal damage.

The accident not only served as a wake-up call for the workaholic four-piece band, but also sparked the realisation that if Primrose had to give away the rhythm sticks for good, Travis was finished.

"When Neil had his accident we thought: `Okay this could be it'," said guitarist Andy Dunlop from his base in London.

"He had no feeling in his hands and we knew if that didn't come back then that's Travis. It was tough and once he was given the okay, we had to think: `Do we do the band again?'"

For the five years previously, the school friends had toured the world and rose to success - going from selling 40,000 copies of their debut 1997 album Good Feeling and to securing multi-platinum sales with the next two, The Man Who in 1999 and The Invisible Band in 2001.

They also managed to win the British album of the year gongs at the annual BRIT Awards twice.

While they were riding a career high, Travis felt under pressure and rushed into recording 12 Memories, just five months after Primrose's accident.

Travis frontman Fran Healy later described the offering as a "therapy session".

Fatigued and drained, Dunlop says the mix masters of popular songs Sing and Why Does It Always Rain on Me? hit a crossroads after 12 Memories.

Bailing out of the music industry for three years was the remedy they needed to launch their fifth album, The Boy With No Name, releasing nationally on May 5.

"We left the industry behind, we needed to step away," Dunlop admits.

"The thing is our life looks really glamorous and it's a great life, but it's not very inspiring to write about. No one wants to hear about the inside of a hotel room. We had to go off and live a little and experience the world again away from Travis."

The Boy With No Name, titled after Healy emailed a picture of his yet-to-be named baby to friends with the phrase in the subject line, signifies the initial uniting of Travis as a group more than a decade ago.

"It signifies why we became a band in the first place - for making music," Dunlop said.

"You get caught up in the music industry. This is really a labour of love this record. The thing with this record is we are 100 per cent happy with it and all loved making it. It was like being in a band for the first time again. We took three years because we didn't want to rush it."

The 35-year-old father of one says taking the break unearthed a fresh and mature band.

"I had a baby and he is 16 months now so I got to spend time with him and it's weird because when you're in your 20s you feel immortal and I think with having babies you stop thinking about yourself so much," Dunlop said.

"Before that you become so self-obsessed. When we had him you stop obsessing about yourself and you have someone to look after."

In recent times, Chris Martin, the frontman of multiple Grammy award winning English group Coldplay and husband of Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow, has admitted Travis "invented" his band.

While Dunlop is humbled by Martin's notion, he says it was inevitable that Travis would influence up-coming bands.

"I think he was going a bit far," he laughs.

"But, it's kind of nice. We got slaughtered for a long time for our first album. They said it was nice but too commercial and obviously went on to become this big thing. For bands like Coldplay we have opened certain doors for that might not have been there.

"But you can trace this way back. When a band becomes successful it opens all these doors for other bands to come through."

Travis have visited Australia twice before and Dunlop says the band is looking forward to touring its fifth offering abroad.

"I think there has to be (a tour of Australia)," Dunlop said.

"We only toured nine months for our last record and it was a dark record and quite hard, which was intense. This record is much more up-beat so we can tour a lot longer."

Thrilling a live audience with their tunes is what keeps Travis striving towards their next album release, says Dunlop.

"This is what keeps a band together - live shows and the reactions to your songs," he said.

"Live music is one of the few experiences that people get to sit in a room these days, apart from a sporting event, and enjoy. That's what we love most."

TRAVIS are back with new tunes and a new tour, three years on from their last outing 12 Memories.

The new single, Closer, is released on April 23 and they will be calling in to the Reading Hexagon on April 27 to perform it, along with other new and old material.

Having long been regarded as the trailblazers for the emotionally engaging pop anthem, they have clearly rediscovered what made us love them in the first place.

Their new album, The Boy With No Name, a belting collection of bittersweet pop songs from the band Chris Martin says "invented" Coldplay, will be released on Independiente on May 7.

Travis have just returned from filming the Closer promotional video in Los Angeles. Set in a supermarket, with each band member playing a store employee, Fran - clad in a bear suit as the store's mascot - breaks into song, shoppers and their trolleys engage in a synchronised dance routine and drummer Neil dances across the aisles with a customer, until the store's manager - played by long-standing Travis fan, Hollywood star Ben Stiller - breaks up the fun.

Their new live shows will be their first since 2005's T In The Park appearance. Support will come from Brinkman, and their infectious brand of guitar pop.

Standing at the modern-day frontier of an established English songwriting movement, Brinkman draw on the similarly observant styling of The Kinks, The La's and Blur.

Travis cannot be commercial. Just listen to the b-sides. :laugh3: Well, if I look at the b-sides, their albums DO seem more commercial. But anyway...

I don’t know if they were running out of words or they just thought this lyrics are too good to be forgotten lol, but I like the way they put it in the new song.

--------------
It's so sad to be alone
No one cares but no one's home
So if you're there pick up the phone
Because I'm standing on my own
Ain't it good to know you're right
And don't it soothe the darker nights
But pretty soon it will be light
Ain't it good to know you're right
But I'm standing on my own
And this house is not a home
It's so sad to see you go
Things are high things are low
And it's good to know you know
If you've got nowhere to go
You can spend the night with me
I will sleep on the settee
It's so sad to be alone
No one cares cause no one's home
So if you're there pick up the phone
Because I'm standing on my own

All the albums are amazing :)

Good Feeling is great, and quite different to all the others. They were younger and the songs are all a bit more 'rockier' for lack of a better word to use.
U16 Girls is awesome. "Na na na na na na na na na na" :D
Also love Tied to The 90s and More than Us (which is the most like their later stuff on the album).

They are all great but if I had to choose, I think 'The Man Who' would be my favourite, and close to my favourite album of all time, maybe 2nd only to 'Whats the story Morning Glory?' (Oasis).
'Why Does It Always Rain on Me?' is my favourite song of all time so no words could describe being there and hearing it live. Hoping I get the chance when they announce more shows in the near future.

It's been three years since Travis released a studio album. Three years in which the band took a break from the hectic schedule, increasing sales and manic lifestyle that going from selling 40,000 copies of debut release Good Feeling to the multi-platinum success of 2001's The Invisible Band created for them. Some might say they've been usurped by the somewhat similar talents of Coldplay and Keane, but the former are far more irritating and the latter far more melancholy than Travis could ever be.

Travis are a band with experience, history and pedigree, and it really does show. The Boy With No Name is their fifth album, released exactly ten years after their fabulous debut. The emergence of Travis into the mainstream back in the late '90s and early Noughties heralded a spate of fantastically written and brilliantly performed hits from the now-lesser-spotted Scottish group. These songs range in tone from the chirpy, simple and early on 'Tied To The '90s' to the rather more sophisticated 'Pipe Dreams', and indeed the wit and writing of Travis is clearly still improving with each release, as The Boy With No Name shows.

When listening to the band's new album, do take a moment to sit back and marvel at how lead singer Fran Healy marries the bittersweet, often low mood lyrics of Travis' songs with the orchestrations that surround his "broken up" voice. From the powerfully energetic 'Selfish Jean', which disguises a tale of failed friendship, to the delicate tones of first single 'Closer', over which Healy's voice swoops smoothly, the album is unified in concept yet disparate in tone.

All tracks on The Boy With No Name are of a similar standard of workmanship and enjoyability. Certainly, the joyful and twinkling 'My Eyes', writen the day Healy found out he was going to be a father, is a stand out, with the almost ditzy little bonus track 'Sailing Away' taking away an honourable mention, but each track on this album is a lovingly crafted piece of workmanship and a joy to listen to. Rather uniquely, nothing irritates, nothing is too whiny - absolutely nothing is sub-par about this wonderful, charming album. Long live Travis.

I must say I agree that TBWNN is one of the best album this year, although it's still April. :)

@ Marek : You have bought the album? Isn't it released in May? Or you pre-order it?

I think that The Boy With No Name is definitely one of the best albums I have heard yet this year.
Agree. Favourite Worst Nightmare and The Boy With No name are my favs so far, and they'll be hard to beat

2 Bonus tracks... Sailing away and UNDER THE MOONLIGHT??? :)

No, from what I can see, Under the Moonlight is just a regular album track. It seems it was originally not included on the album track list, but at the last minute was included, so it's just a regular album track.

It's hard to know whether Sailing Away is a 'hidden track' appearing on all versions or is a bonus track. Play.com shows the tracklisting as this:
01. 3 Times and You Lose
02. Selfish Jean
03. Closer
04. Big Chair
05. Battleships
06. Eyes Wide Open
07. My Eyes
08. One Night
09. Under the Moonlight
10. Out in Space
11. Colder
12. New Amsterdam
13. Sailing Away (Hidden Track)
14. Perfect Heaven Space (UK Bonus Track)

While HMV have Perfect Heaven Space as track 1 instead of 14. So it's clear that Perfect Heaven Space which we have not heard yet is a UK bonus track. It's still unclear about Sailing Away though. That just says Hidden track, but as there are supposed to be 2 UK bonus tracks, that could be it. Or there could be another one that we have not heard of yet. The only thing that is clear I think is that Under the Moonlight is an album track and is definitely not a bonus track. I guess we won't find out for sure until it's actually released next week. And those of us not in the UK will have to rely on someone who gets the UK version to provide us with the bonus tracks :)

TRAVIS' one-time ubiquity had us thinking of them as pop's sliced white bread or Ford Mondeo - the dull but efficient default consumer choice.

Chris Martin's admission that Travis all but "invented" Coldplay gives us yet another reason to dislike Fran Healey's merry men.

But over three years on from Travis's last album, absence has made the heart grow fonder. There is a fresh, uncomplicated appeal to this set of songs, and a traditional craftsmanship to their conception.

The pining melody and backing vocals of Closer are pure 1960s pop. Selfish Jean is a bit of a Motown pastiche. 3 Times And You Lose even has a flavour of Simon and Garfunkel.

There are disarmingly simple songs like My Eyes and Out In Space, the latter seemingly drawn from Bert Weedon's Play In A Day guitar tutor.

Travis now describes the last album 12 Memories as "a therapy session", and there does seem to be a sense of renewal about The Boy With No Name.

By the way, that mysterious title has a mundane explanation: Healey and his wife could not settle on a name for their son Clay for several weeks.

Released on May 7.

I hereby confirm that 'Under The Moonlight' IS in fact on the album.
It's already released in the Netherlands.

It seems like they added this track after having sent out advanced copies of the album.

With regards to wondering what the UK bonus tracks are on the previous page, I have just found the tracklisiting on a New Zealand site for the version we will get here in NZ, and 'Sailing Away' is listed.
So I think this means we can assume Sailing Away is a hidden album track appearing on most, if not all versions of the album, and is not 1 of the 2 'UK Bonus Tracks.' So those should be 'Perfect Heaven Space' and 1 as yet unnamed track :)

If I see the album on Monday in a supermarket for cheap, i shall buy it. If I don't see it for cheap, I shall wait a couple months until it appears in the cheap bins.

So, 'Closer' and 'Selfish Jean' are the first two singles.

If they were to pick 2 or 3 more singles after this, which ones would you choose?

Definitely 'My Eyes'. It MUST become a single. Most people out there think this is the best track on the album, along with 'Selfish Jean'. I'll tell Fran or any of the other guys when I see them next month (I intend to meet them after a gig I'll be attending).

'Under The Moonlight' would be my next pick, especially since KT Tunstall is pretty popular at the moment. It also sounds pretty soundtrack-ish to me. Dunno, I can imagine it being used in some kind of popular romantic comedy film. Plus, it's a nice tune for the radio. It could work.

My last choice would be either 'Battleships' or 'One Night'.

I also really like 'Eyes Wide Open', which seems to be their gig opener nowadays, and I think it's perfect for that... But it's not single material.
Same goes for 'Colder', which is a brilliant song... one of my favourites, but I can't imagine it doing well as a single.

Almost all the new songs.

Not so fond of 'Out In Space' myself.
They should have included 'This Love' on the album instead imo.
