Oooh, about the dvd, it's official. I received a newsletter. Look:

Dear All,

Travis rounded off 2003 in style with a one off Christmas gig at Alexandra Palace,
North London with support from The Kings Of Leon and Ben Kweller, this event was
also filmed for a live DVD, expected later this year. Photos and a feature,
including the full set list from the gig are now available in the Access All Areas
section at Travisonline.

I'm debating purchasing a digital camera .... not only for the concert but for real life. If I get one, then there'll be a TON of photos to share ...

... they're not going to be as good as Mandy's, but it's not my fault she's better looking than me. If I had her to put in my photos maybe, but beyond that ... I think my seats are aways from the stage.

But I'm still looking forward to it.

The concert was cool.
Got back about 30 minutes ago.
Yeah, I can barely see the venu from my apartment, but I can. An easy walk.

I'm SO glad I went. None of my crew likes Travis that much so I had to go alone, but it was worth it. I was disappointed there wasn't more of a reaction to Beautiful Occupation, but oh well.

Well, I didn't take picks or memorize the set list, although I'm sure I can recall it if I had to.

Spreckels theatre is eight blocks from my house, no the previously reported six or "few". But it's an easy walk. It's a theatre house: about 100' from the stage to the back of the theatre but three decks high, seating about 2,000. I bought my ticket late, but me and somebody I met ended up sneaking into some low second level seats. We had a perfect view of everything.

They opened the show with Happy to Hang Around and then went into Re-Offender. Early on Fran's voice we cracking on high notes, and it became clear as the night went on that he wasn't going to try and really stretch it. That's OK: the quality of the live performance usurped any possible disappointment I might have had that Fran's voice wasn't 100%.

Every song they played was great. I don't say that just because. Each song really was well performed. I started thinking how far Travis has come into their career, that they can put on a 16 song main set where you immediately recognize each song, half of them being big hits. And then I realized how much of a Travis fan I was: I knew the words to every song. How could that be? I'd only bought my tickets three weeks before.

For personal reasions, I didn't stick around for the encores (I don't believe in encores), so the may have played other songs. But in addition to the two songs mention, stand out songs (to me) were Mid-Life Krysis, Beautiful Occupation, Side and Sing, Writing to Reach You, and As You Are. They closed the show with Turn, preceded by The Humpty Dumpty Love Song.

I'll always remember the performance of first verse of The Humpty Dumpty Love Song ... when the lyric "You got the glue" came through for the first time my appreciation for the song went through the roof. Listening to the song on the CD I never realized the tightrope Fran walks lyrically through the first verse: balancing quaintness and a potential disaster of triteness to the chorus where "You got the glue" makes the song (when I could have just broken it in half).

There were a couple of disappointing parts to the night. Beautiful Occupation made me sad not only because it made me think of young people dying, but I was disappointed that an American audience treated it like any other song. That leads into the next point: There were a lot of people there treating the show like an N'SYNC concert. Screaming at a couple of points would have been OK. Screaming the whole night? I don't know. I didn't realize that Travis crowds were like that.

But on the whole, this was one of the better shows I've ever been to. I can count the shows I would consider "clearly better" on one hand (maybe a couple of fingers of the second). Travis is safely in that group right below what I consider the spectacular shows I've been to (stuff like Radiohead, or White Stripes/Yeah Yeah Yeahs on the same bill).

The best part: The band was cool. They interacted a ton with the crowd, and I could tell all of the personal stories people have told about them are true. Their tour bus was parked right outside, and I could see that, for the post-show celebration, the band prefers Foster's, Diet Coke and Sprite :)

OMG ... I just realized: I saw Travis.

You know, the night I joined this board was after a Radiohead concert, when Iw as so psyched from the show that I didn't want to stop listening to music ... it was 2am and I drove to my office so I could listen to my AROBTTH CD ... and I just started posting.

And then rest is periodically-absent-from-the-board history.

"The grass is always greener on the other side
The neighbour's got a new car that you wanna drive
When your time is running out you wanna stay alive
We all live under the same sky
We all will live we all will die
There is no wrong there is no right
A circle only has one side"
--Side

"So you'd better hold on cos it's Saturday night
And your friends are all out and you feel like shit
Cos they never call you, no they never call you
No they never call, never bloody ever

Call me a name and I'll hit you again
You're a slut, you're a bitch, you're a whore
Talk to your daddy in that tone of voice
There's a belt hanging over the door
So you run to your room and you hide in your room
Thinking how you can settle the score"

So many great songs to choose from but here are just two favourites :)

Driftwood -

everything is open
nothing is set in stone
rivers turn to ocean
oceans tide you home
home is where the heart is
but your heart had to roam
drifting over bridges
never to return

Turn -

We'll never know unless we grow
There's so much world outside the door
I want to sing
To sing my song
I want to live in a world where I'll be strong
I want to live I will survive
And I believe that it won't be very long

If we turn, (x8 :D)
Then we might learn

That´s my fave Travis song...

The Humpty Dumpty Love Song

All of the king's horses
And all of the kings men
Couldn't put my heart back together again
All of the physicians and mathematicians too
Failed to stop my heart from breaking in two

Cos all I need is you
I just need you
Yeah, you got the glue
So I'm going to give my heart to you

I had a premonition
A movie in my mind
Confirming my suspicions about what I would fine
You followed me to LA, down to Mexico
Came in through the back door
At the start of the show

Chorus

Oh was a perfect day
Oh in a perfect way
You know, something had to go
You left me high, you left me low
Now as I lie in pieces, await for your return
The sun upon my forehead
It burns, baby, burns, baby, burns
An eye on all my horses
You slept with all my men
I'm never going to get it together again

Que onda?!?!?!

There's nothing like that moment when the music playing between acts stops, the stage goes dark, and you can see the outline of the band walking on stage. Having never seen Travis before, this was probably the highlight: The first moment of their live performance.

There was a point were Fran let somebody from the audience drink from the cup he had on stage. Later he said the contents were a lemon/ginger mixture (again, the throat). I thought I would have been great if the girl who drank from the cup did a spit-take :)

Indefinitely
Time exists just on your wrist so don’t panic
Moments last and lifetimes are lost in a day
So wind your watches down please
’cos there is no time to lose

The Fear
Hottest summer in a hundred years
But summer didn’t bother
Getting up this morning

Safe
When I was young things didn’t last
My only care stemmed to the price of sweets
Now I am older I can laugh
A dolly mixed up man with rotten teeth

My favourite song of all times :D I just have to post the entire song:

Travis / Why Does It Always Rain On Me?
I can't sleep tonight
Everybody saying everything's alright
Still I can't close my eyes
I'm seeing a tunnel at the end of all these lights

Sunny days
Where have you gone?
I get the strangest feeling you belong
Why does it always rain on me?
Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?
Why does it always rain on me?
Even when the sun is shining
I can't avoid the lightning

I can't stand myself
I'm being held up by an invisible man
Still life on a shelf when
I got my mind on something else

Sunny days
Where have you gone?
I get the strangest feeling you belong
Why does it always rain on me?
Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?
Why does it always rain on me?
Even when the sun is shining
I can't avoid the lightning

Oh, where did the blue skies go?
And why is it raining so?
It's so cold
I can't sleep tonight
Everybody's saying everything's all right
Still I can't close my eyes
I'm seeing a tunnel at the end of the lights

Sunny days
Where have you gone?
I get the strangest feeling you belong
Why does it always rain on me?
Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?
Even when the sun is shining
I can't avoid the lightning
Oh, where did the blue skies go?
And why is it raining so?
It's so cold
Why does it always rain on me?
Why does it always rain on....

Stupid English-centric pop world! :P
The Police did a lot of songs in Spanish, a lot of time with completely different words to account for the difference in language (e.g., not a straight translation).
Sting still does record a lot of him music in both Spanish and Portuguese.

Fegulas are people who like to be with other fegulas. In all other respects, they're not much different than anybody else. Some people say fegulas are more interested in fashion than a normal man, but that's a little too general.

Some people say fegulas are generall in better shape than other males. I tend to agree with this.

Well, some people tonight agrees with you, about me being a stalker!!
Maybe I am, yeah... :sneaky:

Ooooh, two news about Travis I read in the official mb:
1. It is planned that the new dvd will be out before summer.
2. A girl has told that they're gonna play in Austria next April. She has the tickets already. Huuuuum, maybe another european tour? Pleeeeeeeeease, I hope so!

     Well, you know that Frannie is not wearing the white suit in the lasts gigs... you could ask him for it!! :P :P

Do you know a song called 'This years love' by David Gray? It would be fantastic if you could play it there. Richard and me love it and we'd like to hear it in the reception...

We should decide what kind of wedding we want, and the period of the year, and make a quick guestlist...

I'm not sure what type of wedding I envision. I'd prefer it to be outside in the late summer. Being in scenic place, enjoying nature, is important to me.

As far as the guestlist, I won't be flying many people to Spain for the event. I think my whole party coming from the States will be less than 15.

Well, that's family. They'll be lots of other Coldplayers invited.

Yes! This is going to be the song for our dance at the reception.
And I think it only appropriate that you play it for us.

They were selling those shirts last night. I wanted to get a hoody, but it was too much for my liking.

Heeey, Ren, you know what? Last night I was in a music-bar and I saw a guy wearing a Travis t-shirt. It has 'Peace the fuck out' in big letters in the front. And I decided to talk to him.

Noni: Hey, your t-shirt is grrrreat
Guy: Yeeah, it's from Travis. Do you know them?
Noni: Of course, one of my fave bands. I love them
Guy: Aaaah, me too, me too. I bought it in the last gig. Did you go there?
Noni: Ooooo course. An amazing show. They're fantastic!!
Guy: Oh yeah, the show was incredible. The lead singer is great!! And do you remember Flowers in the window? Oooh, I was speechless!
Noni: Oooo yeeeah, I started to cry like a child!
Guy: Aaaaaaw, so nice... It's the magician of their music.
Noni: Yeah, it is... I'm glad to see someone with good tastes here.
Guy: Me too. Nice to meet you!

The night started very good!!! :D

Never stay for the encore.

These lame, contrived encores are SO stupid.

Why not just add those songs to the main set, or just say that "we'll be back in 5 minutes." And why does the audience scream the whole time?

So lame.

Fran also came out by himself to perform Flowers In The Window at the gig I saw, but it wasn't the same, it lacked all the lovely sounds that blend together so well in that song and it just didn't feel whole, it was beautiful none the less but it could have been magical :/

Well yeah, it lacked all the lovely sounds, but it was special to just see him there all alone singing and everybody in the theatre was sooo quiet, my gf was teery eyed because that is her favorite song
By the way, I thought Fran still had the long hair, but he looks better with his hair short, and in the words of my girlfriend : Doug dances very very very sexy

It's one of my fave lyrics:

Why Does It Always Rain On Me
I can't sleep tonight
Everybody saying everything's alright
Still I can't close my eyes
I'm seeing a tunnel at the end of all these lights
Sunny days
Where have you gone?

Late summer sounds great for me. Mid-september maybe. And something outside is what I was thinking too... In the country, or in a old house in the mountains or in the beach!! :smug:
15 people is good. I don't like those massive weddings, I'll only invite my closest relatives and friends.
And yeaaaah, the coldplayers will be the special guests! :D
