Alrite had to be done...

This has been and probably will be my favorite band to come. Their music takes me away to a place without cares or worries. The one of the best group of musicians to be put together, each with immense talent and creativity to create their unique sound.

Yeah if you aren't a DMB fan then it's hard to convert to one. Most people hate DMB even if they've never given them a fair listen just because of the stereotypes around the band. I can completely understand, but if you give dmb a good listen, you might be surprised if you think you wouldn't like them. They really have something for everybody. I good album to start on might be Crash since it's the most commercial, and well really damn good. I'd also recommend Under the Table and Dreaming.

Well, I guess not many Coldplay fans are also Daveheads.

My love for DMB began in 1996, when I was 13. Their music helped get me through... um, let's just say a really bad time in my life. So, largely cos of that, DMB was, and remains, very important to me.

I came of age with DMB playing in the background. My first (seven) concerts featured Dave Matthews (with and w/o the band). I ditched my closest friends and started over when I was 16, partly cos of an incident that involved DMB (don't worry, it wasn't only about the band). I took drama cos Dave used to act, even though I have major stage-fright, and I eventually got into advanced drama. My high school graduation was outshone by meeting Dave himself. I got into David Gray cos he was on ATO Records. Everyone who knew me, knew me as the Dave Matthews girl. That's what people remember about me. And I wouldn't change it.

Even Chris Martin said something like it's great that DMB is huge in America. I forget why, cos they're passionate or something. Y'know, he always seems to be going on about passion in music.

I should shut up now and go listen to Seek Up.

Jacob
02-07-2003, 07:08 PM
wow, u r a true fan.

I find that Dave Matthew's stuff is relaxing rock music. Something that is hard to composse. Busted Stuff features it most.

I'm trying to decide whether I should get Everyday or not. Was that a good cd?

bozo
02-07-2003, 11:12 PM
Everday seems to be the less DMB "sounding" album they have.. it's the least like the others....
It's got some good stuff on it, but if you want something that is "typcial" sounding of DMB, I'd get something else.

Jacob
02-07-2003, 11:16 PM
alrite, thanx! I guess I'll buy Crash then.

Yea, people have told me Everyday is more of a harder rock cd, not really something the Dave Matthews Band would be good at. Dave Matthews is better at softer rock. The Space Between though is a great song from it.

Majson
16-09-2003, 07:25 PM
wheee..

im' all hyped.

I managed to download the full on 60mbs gravedigger video the other day. Having heard the song a dozen or more times live (and may i add loving it) the full band version is so amazing. So much more rocky, not what i thought it would be because of all the word with the dave matthews band, but this solo project of his seems to have given him a slightly more rockier, and then creative vibe, which i hope will rub off on the enxt album the entire band do together.

but the video is amazingly sad at times, and the song is fucking ace.

And plus i'm obsessed with my hero..so i thought i'd do a new thread.

Why did he go solo?

Majson
30-09-2003, 06:30 PM
wel it's just a tangent according to him, some songs and ideas he wanted to go about using without the influence of the band. He hassaid he'd be stupid to quit, as he is good friends with the band memembers and is still very much enjoying playing together with them

so i guess it was just cos he felt like a change, and going to do another band album next year

Not putting your opinion down because I respect it, but don't you think Chris Martin's voice is whiney too? Don't get me wrong I love his voice as well as Matthews' but I think Martin's voice could be considered more "whiney" than Dave's. Oh well, just a thought.

Yea I know what you mean. That album (BTCS) has a lot of flow, what I mean is it seems to flow from one song to the next. I also get a classic feel when I listen to it, maybe because of Halloween's outro and the intro to The Stone.

I'd have to say my favorite album though would be Crash. And if we aren't talking official then I would say their best work was in the Lillywhite Sessions. The captain in LWS is amazing.

Yea the solo album was pretty sweet. The real treat in that is actually seeing Dave's solo tour. I was at 12.12.03 Penn State. Seeing him, Trey from Phish and Tim Reynolds is quite the show. So far in the tour they have covered classics like Up On Cripple Creek, American Tune, Hey Bulldog, Fool In The Rain, Oh Sister, Tell Me Something Good, and so on.

Not putting your opinion down because I respect it, but don't you think Chris Martin's voice is whiney too? Don't get me wrong I love his voice as well as Matthews' but I think Martin's voice could be considered more "whiney" than Dave's. Oh well, just a thought.

Yes actually I am on Antsmarching.org frequently. I'll admit that there are a lot of idiots on dave boards but in its defense, more the people, more of a chance for the occasional asshole.(know what I mean?) I mean Antsmarching.org is going on almost 50,000 members.

But anyways, yea I agree with your BTCS description. But I still love the feel of Crash and UTTAD. You have Central Park? It is amazing, I wish I could have been there. Oh well, if your interested they are thinking about doing a DMB 3 day festival this spring. I think I'll be attending that, although the date and location are not yet set.

Hmmm?

Rain
26-03-2004, 05:50 AM
There might be, i've heard one that doesn't have the huge musical section with the flute at the end, but as for a lyrical difference I didn't notice. Ya, the music video version is definitely shorter, they may have changed it just to make it fit, not sure. I love that song too!

Crazy how it feels tonight
Crazy how you make it all alright love
You crush me with the things you do
I do for you anything too
Sitting smoking feeling high

Yes, it's crazy I'm thinking
Just knowing that the world is round
Here I'm dancing on the ground
Am I right side up or upside down
Is this real or am I dreaming

Lovely Lady
I am at your feet
Let me drink you please
I won't spill a drop I promise you
Lying under this spell you cast on me

Each moment
The more I love you
Crush me
Come on

Ahhh, yeah

It's crazy I'm thinking
Just knowing that the world is round
Here I'm dancing on the ground
Am I right side up or upside down
Is this real or am I dreaming

(instrumental thing)

Lovely Lady
I will treat you sweetly
Adore you I mean you crush me
It's times like these
When my faith I feel
And I know how I love you
Come on, come on

It's crazy I'm thinking
Just as long as you're around
I'm here I'll be dancing on the ground
Am I right side up or upside down

To each other we'll be facing
By love we'll beat back the pain we've found
You know
I mean to tell you all the things I've been thinking deep inside
My friend
With each moment...

And that's where the music fades.

mmm Dave....IDOL!

Under the table and dreaming is a great debut studio only album from the band. that shows what type of band they are, the type of songs they paly, the way they'll play them, the importance of lyrics that are a little like flowing poetry.

Crash went a little more pop rock in a slow evolution. Continues where the revious album elft off, and thenshows the new direction the band has taken, how they've grown, some classic classic songs

Before these crowded streets is hailed as THE definative dmb album, with some really complex songs, both musically and lyrically. It has all the brillaince of the previous albums, with a new hint of inspiration thrown in. People think it can only go down from here

everyday, yes very poppy. The reason behind it is well documented. The band just had no inspiriation whilst recording "the lillywhite sessions" and thus scrapped that album, and did something more upbeat....it's not great but it's nice enough

Busted stuff shows a true return tof orm, with what they learnt during the past few eyars thrown in. And back to it's roots.

mmm

they're not corpertate jam...

they released an album independantly to be begin with, and it was that album (remember two things) that made RCA want to sign them up. DMB didn't sell out, they just madesure they had wider distribution...

and with such distribution, they've donated so much to charity, made thesmelves available for as many good causes as they agree with, helped promote other bands, hell, dave used his status, and ties to help co-create his own label in theus,a to which he signed david gray up to....

But i would put them in jam band myself...they're not rock, they have influences of rock (mostly the drummer with bass) influences of punk (the bass), folk and coutnry and classical (voilin) jazz (sax) etc...a rather eclectic mix...

Well... I deemed them "corporate" based more on their audience than anything else. I think you misunderstood me, but then again, I really didn't bother explaining myself either. :P

But I would still argue that they very much DID sell out with Everyday. If you have a perfectly good album, and your record label makes you trash it, so you do so and write an album with some other guy not in the band purely because he'd written hits before, drastically changing your sound to something that's undoubtedly more "commercial" by any definition of the word, isn't that sort of the exact definition of "selling out?" Granted, they obviously weren't satisfied with it since they ended up retooling and releasing their canned album anyway and haven't gone back to that sound since then, but they still did it.

if i could have just one dmb cd i think i'd go with crash. it has quite a few songs that are considered essential dave (#41, Two Step, Lie In Our Graves, say goodbye) plus some radio staples (Crash Into Me, Tripping Billies, So Much To Say). It also has a nice combination of really mellow songs (proudest monkey, cry freedom, let you down) and rockers (too much, drive in drive out). i also like uttad and btcs alot but crash is their best imo. if you get uttad listen to pfwyg (it's my favorite dmb song) and with bttcs listen to dreaming tree (great understated bass part)

Some people think it's a little crazy to see someone that many times, but for me it's always a good excuse to have a lot of fun. This summer my boyfriend and I are going to Alpine Valley in Wisconsin(2 shows) to see them, and The Gorge in Washington (3 shows), and the show here in Phoenix. They're basically just weekend long parties. We're also traveling to Cali to see Colplay at Coachella of course:)

Oh, I have definitely been to 18 shows. I think last year alone I went to more than that. As for DMB, I have seen them once live, and wasn't all that impressed, too much money for so little. And they only play great, big venues, which is not my style.

MyGreenEyes
14-03-2005, 03:36 AM
Oh, I agree. Smaller venues are usually better shows. DMB shows are always so high energy and that's why I love them. My boyfriend is the crazy DMB fan, I'm just happy to go along with him. I was a fan of them before I met him, and I'm sure I wouldn't have seen them this many times if I wasn't with him, but I ALWAYS have a good time. I do prefer the smaller venues and I do go to other concerts other than DMB. I saw Modest Mouse a few weeks back, and I'm going to see The Killers in a few weeks, and then Coachella. Concerts are my hobby.

i hafta say that it should be a really good album. it should be alot diferent from most of their other stuff (especially everything they've put out since btcs). it'll have more of a jazzy, hip-hop feel on a few tracks and will be a really good cd (i'm excited about it). i've heard a number of the songs live and they are up there with some of dmb's early material as being their best. check out the songs "hello again" and "joy ride" when you get the chance. hello again stole the show at darien lake (near buffalo) that i went to this summer. i've seen them four times and personally think they're an awesome band to see live just because the environment is so mellow and most of the people are really cool. unfortunately their has recently been a few too many high-school age kids there who just came to get hammered and they tend to be assholes.

I went to see them live once when I still liked them. It was shortly after Everyday came out..I think with that album it all went under. It was no longer jamming, it was too studio sounding, too fake, too radio-friendly. Anyway, they put on a good show, but I wouldn't go now since I have no interest in what they have been doing with their albums.

As long as the albums are good, it won't. As long as the heart is there in the art of the music, and not just love for the money, they will keep their integrity. This new record is not as strong in my opinion. The next one, I hope, will be stronger.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Here's a review from the show I saw on Thursday and it is right on:

Copyright Times Publishing Co. Jul 15, 2005
Okay, so I get it now. The Dave Matthews thing, that is. The cult. The adoration. The previous unexplainable, inexplicable, seemingly contrary-to-logic phenomenon that is the Dave Matthews fan base.

"It's a special occasion. It's DMB. They don't have to (see what we do). They know. They can feel it. It's DMB. They get the love," said fan Tara Raes.

Come on, Tara. They get the love? Are you kidding? Damn, do they get the love. At the amphitheater show, they got love you just don't see often, especially when at least half of the capacity crowd, 20,000 strong, trudged through a minefield of parking lot mud pits just to reach the amphitheater stage.

If there is a band that prompts a more familiar groove from its fans, this reviewer has never seen it.

On Thursday I realized the power of a Dave Matthews Band show.

With the DMB, we're all family. We're all old school. We're all at the family reunion, we're all at girls' night out, we're all at boys' night out. We're all together, and DMB finds a way to make it so.

They played songs, mind you, but the individual songs hardly mattered. You caught What Would You Say here, or Ants Marching there, and more tunes than expected off the newest disc, Stand Up, and really it didn't matter, because it's the DMB, and they play so tight. They play with such an organic syncopation that they could rip through Oops! I Did it Again and you would play along for every single second.

Why? Because despite their spotty recording history, they are that incredible live. They are in their element and then some. They are a rock band, a blues band, a jazz band, a jam band.

And as best a straight man can put it, they are adorable. They are the Dan Cortese to the George Costanza and his man-crush on Seinfeld. They are guys' guys, and man are they ever ladies' men. Take it from every close-up of Matthews on his acoustic guitar, of violinist Boyd Tinsley with his impressive exposed biceps, of easygoing, unflappable drummer Carter Beauford.

They are expert musicians, and to DMB fans, they are idols, they are mentors, they are family. It was a reunion of sorts Thursday night, even for fans who never had seen DMB live before.

It was a party, and everyone was included, everyone was invited, and one can hardly imagine a soul left unhappy. If there is a better way to enjoy oneself on a rainy summer evening, I can hardly imagine how.
