ha! I was just running through some pitchfork reviews and found this:
"Glosoli" is the record's shining center, a rapturous, tinkling swirl, with Birgisson's high, squeaky howls (sounding perfectly thin and kitten-y) shooting through a thick, stomping mess of chimes and echoing guitar. The song builds slowly, finally bursting in a deafening explosion of heavily-distorted guitar slams (think, oddly, of Coldplay-- particularly the end of A Rush of Blood to the Head's "Politik").

Probably Takk... followed by Agaetis Byrjun, all their albums are amazing though. But the general consensus is that these two are the best. ( ) is darker, minimalist and post-rocky, and meo suo i eyrum... is their most accessible and upbeat album.

I still can't get into Von after such a long time...
^same here. I like the song Von but the Hvarf - Heim version <3
I actually much prefer the von version, its such a refreshing change from predictable climaxes, and you can really savor the simple brilliance of the arrangement, a priceless intimacy like all alright or vaka. Obviously its not to be compared with the other albums, they were on the verge of scrapping it altogether...its mostly just amelodic original ambient recordings with three or four roughly sketched out songs. However if you approach it as just that, and not as what you hoped it would be (pun), you can actually really appreciate the originality and innovativeness artiness of the work. On tired evenings when I'm not quite up for the emotional intensity of even the softest or poppiest sigur ros song, I'll switch to this album and adore it for its cool sounds and contrast from everything else they ended up doing. Tracks like the opener seem to almost expand on brian eno concepts, but in ways he probably never imagined.
Eeeehhhh... if i ever need something like that I just listen to Nyja Lagid or Hljomalind (1999 live) <3
I'm not gonna lie, actually just last night i was feeling super down and i listened to Nyja Lagid right before I went to sleep and I cried like a baby but I felt so much better... true story.

I'd have to say either Staralfur, Viorar vel til Loftarasa, Ara Batur, Andvari....Takk easily is the best album string wise, but I'll go with the first two I just mentioned, Staralfur getting extra points for having a palindromic section, and samskeyti as an honorable mention, because the strings are soul crushingly beautiful.

Piano:

Well, a bow isn't really made to be used on guitar strings, so it takes some time to get a consistent, droney sound out of all the friction. Works much better on gibson's obviously.

Yeah, Cello bows are the best.
You have to put a lot of that Rosin or whatever stuff on the bow so it can actually grip the strings.

( ) > Ágætis byrjun > Takk... > Með suð > Von :D
:D I don't like Von :disappointed: I dunno if that makes me a failed fan... I just can't get into it... I was gonna give it another chance sometimes soon but I'm just MEH.
^I agree  except I'd probably have Med sud... before Takk...

I haven't listened to Von that much, but I can't get into it either. It's just so.. weird. :D I do like the Hvarf/Heim versions of the song Von though (especially the Heim one :awesome:).
Með suð is kind of short. :(
the_gloaming09
20-02-2010, 03:11 AM
I have heard that Von is really weird. I'll listen to it someday.
Með suð is good from what I've heard. I really like the bottom half of the album a lot. I have to listen to it more.
^^Hvarf-Heim version songs are incredible, though :D
Með suð... Gobbledigook... Illgressi,...Fljotavik <3
^the video for Gobbledigook has a whole bunch on naked people running around ...the first time I saw it I was like...AHHHHHHHHH!!!! :dead:

20-02-2010, 03:17 AM
not really a fan of Goobledigook.
my favs off that album are: Ara Batur, Fljotavik, Illgressi, and All Alright
I like it cos of the "lalalallalalallalal lalalallalalala" :wacky:

IMO it sounds like it could be an Animal Collective song more than a Sigur Ros song
fietssleutel
20-02-2010, 03:25 AM
The first part of the album is too much.. in your face, or something. Especially the first two tracks. I really like Við spilum endalaust though. It's just the right amount of happiness. :nice: But I think my favourites off the album are Fljótavík/Straumnes and Ára bátur.
It took me probably about 5 listens to realize that All Alright was actually sung in English. Hadn't really paid much attention to the tracklisting I guess. :D
Heey Yaaa!
20-02-2010, 05:40 PM
Yeah, Cello bows are the best.
You have to put a lot of that Rosin or whatever stuff on the bow so it can actually grip the strings.
I've used my brother's violin bow a couple of times but it doesn't work too well
What is that? Just lubricated stuff?

Hello everyone! :D I haven't been in this thread for ages. I'm on a huge Sigur Ros kick lately, though, I think because of all the excitement for Jonsi's new album, and the fact that I'm going to Iceland in about a month .
I have a favor to ask: I asked in Multimedia about this several days ago, but I haven't had any luck yet. Does anyone happen to have We Are Scientists cover of "Hoppipolla" that they could post/send me? I'd love to avoid doing a crap audio rip of the YouTube version, and all the links I find on the board here are dead and ages old, so if someone has it on their hard drive that they could share, I'd be greatly appreciative! :nice:
