So, have you told them to come in Croatia? :D
I envy you, really. x_x
Well, i must say that I´m a bit frustrated. My friends and I, we missed their concert in Dresden because the tickets were sold out on the day we wanted to buy them. I would really like to see them playing live, here in Croatia. Even Olafur Arnalds is coming next month... :\

Killer setlist from Friday. I was supposed to go, but the train situation didn't work out and getting stranded in San Francisco didn't sound too thrilling to me the night before Lovefest. :laugh4: And I couldn't find any friends that share my appreciation for Icelandic post-rock. Which is a shame.
But I was able to sell my tickets and buy Killers tickets at the Warfield with the proceeds, so it's not a total loss. Hoppipolla would have been incredible though... :(

Lets see if I can remember it.
In no particular order:
Svefn-g-englar
Glósóli
Ný Batterí
Við Spilum Endalaust
Hoppípolla
Með Blóðnasir
Festival
Fljótavík
Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása
Heysatan
Svo Hljótt
Sæglópur
Inní Mér Syngur Vitleysingur
Gobbledigook
Popplagið
I don't think I missed any songs. It was an amazing setlist and I'm happy they played Svo Hljott!
Also, in the middle of Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása there was an intense pause. It was silent for like a minute while the bandmembers just stood there.
They did that again during Festival as well. I caught that on camera! :D

Lol, when I really like a song like hoppipolla I'll look up the lyrics and try to memorize them so I can sing along. It's fun singing along in a icelandic.
Yesterday was my birthday and my parents sent me a package that included a bunch of candy and, to my surprise a sigur ros T-shirt. Just black with "Sigur Ros" written in white across the front in that cool font. I don't have a lot of band t-shirts so it's cool to have. :D

I should of told this story a long time ago, but last week I was in history class and my teacher took the class outside to make a point about the greek columns on all the buildings...anyway, while we're waiting for everyone to funnel out, he turns to me and says...
"Hey! I saw you were wearing a sigur ros shirt the other day, you know they're singing a song in english on their new album." I was flabbergasted! that my history teacher could be so cool as to be a fan of icelandic post-rock at a college dominated by bad christian rock.

I know lots of people have preferences on what album to listen to first etc, and I'm all over the place when it comes to that too lol. I started off with Takk, then (), then AB, then all the EPs etc etc, and lastly their recent album.
As much as I try convince myself that I've got an ultimate SR track, I end up with a list of like 15 songs, and that's when the list has been cut down already :wreck: haha. Too many great songs. Gong, Hopippola, and Olsen Olsen, ah and also Staralfur are definite favorites - ah need to stop now or else I'll be here all night lol.

Ára bátur has to be one of the most moving pieces of music I have ever heard. I have even grown to appreciate the first part of Festival! You've gotta love made-up languages. That vocal melody is awesome. Simply awesome. And then when that hook comes in...

The first four tracks off of ( ) are heavenly, as are E-bow and Popplagio. The only criticism I have about the album is how the last four tracks are virtually the same long, dark, drawn-out crescendo. To me the difference between alafoss, E-bow and Daolaggio is very small, and it starts feeling monotous and sort of deja vu. If they had only replaced two of the last four songs with a couple more original tracks it could easily have been my favorite album.

Maybe I'll come to my senses in a few days, but while the other albums are incredible, Agaetis seems to blow them away! Absolutely sensational! Amazing, beautiful and brilliant! I don't know if I've ever enjoyed an album quite as much, this album alone might be enough to knock radiohead out of my top three favorite bands list...I know I'm exaggerating a bit because I'm so over the moon right now, but that just goes to show how impressed I am with their "alright start".

Allt gleymist í smásmá stund og rætist það
Opna augun

Ég kyngi tári og anda hári
Illum látum, í faðmi grátum
Þegar að við hittumst
Þegar að við kyssumst
Varirnar brenndu, höldumst í hendur
Ég sé þig vakinn
Ég sé þig nakinn
Inní mér syngur vitleysingur
Alltaf þið vaða, við hlaupum hraðar
Allt verður smærra, ég öskra hærra
Er er við aða, í burtu fara
Minn besti vinur hverju sem dynur
Illum látum, í faðmi grátum

A silver river
Illuminates the whole world and blue eyes
Cut the starry sky
I make a wish and now I close my eyes
Yes, do that, may it now come true
Oh no
At the speed of the stars
Inside my heart explodes, an airplane rumble
Cracked open the earth sings
I make a wish and now I close my eyes
Yes, do that, a little dance
Everything is forgotten in a bliss, and may it come true
I open my eyes
Oh no
My best friend whatever may happen
I swallow a tear and breathe in your hair
Making a ruckus, we cry on each other's arms
When we meet
When we kiss
Lips burning, holding hands
I see you waking up
I see you naked
Within me a lunatic sings
Always you wade, we run faster
Everything becomes smaller, I scream louder
Am about to wade, going away
My best friend whatever may happen
Making a ruckus, we cry on each other's arms
I swallow a tear and breathe in your hair
When we meet
When we kiss
Lips burning, holding hands

That's true with me, for the most part. The fact that they're in a foreign language that I don't understand definitely makes them even more appealing... but sometimes, the english translations are equally beautiful, like for the one above.

18-01-2009, 05:07 AM
Yeah, translating lyrics is tricky because different cultural expressions, choice of words, and alternate definitions tend to get in the way. In an interview Georg said they write so many songs in vonlenska because what they're trying to express doesn't really need words (which is kind of nice for the 99% of the world that doesn't speak icelandic :P).
However... That doesn't mean Sigur Ros can't write some really great lyrics. My favorites being, Glosoli, Hoppipolla, inni mer syngur vitleysingur, ara batur, and fljotavik.

the second half of ( ) is very depressing, but that album stands far apart from the others. With the exception of a few other individual songs like ny batterei, most of their songs are either soothing, uplifting or relatively happy. Most songs deal with very strong emotions of some sort, but by no means are they a depressing band. Pretty much nothing off of their last two albums is particularly depressing. Sad or intense maybe, like saeglopur. But tracks like svefn-g-englar, vidrar vel ti loftarasa, olsen olsen, von, glosoli, hoppipolla etc. cancel out those accusations.
RadioMad
27-01-2009, 12:26 PM
I'm hardly ever depressive.
In fact, I'm a cheerful person and I love the likes of Sigur Ros, Radiohead and Fleet Foxes.
People who claim this is depressing will end up getting depressive themselves in a couple of years, being fed up listening to Rihanna or Pussycat Dolls.

many people think that if the songs don't have a drumbeat or agressive chords then they are depressive... or that the lyrics are shit if they don't say things like oh you are so so so so so sext and i wanna fuck you fuck you fuck you yeah hot!
INstead Sigur Rós is uplifting, intense and brilliant
Tnspieler1012
27-01-2009, 09:47 PM
well almost all sigur ros songs have drumbeats, although they're often pretty unusual. It may just be the prolonged nature of their songs, how you're often given a lot of time to soak in the nuances, unlike a 3 minute pop song.

that reminded of a latin genre, the reggaeton, very similar to hip hop, and on all of the songs the drums are the same
talking about drums, Untitled #8 has probably the best drum work of Sigur Rós
Tnspieler1012
28-01-2009, 12:18 AM
Yeah, especially at the end of a set, it must be absolutely exhausting. I am huge a fan of Orri's drumming. I love how he mostly plays with brushes (which not a lot of drummers do), so the beats have a soft, distinct sound like in Svefn-g-englar and agaetis byrjun, but then he'll use mallets on large bass drums like in von, njosnavelin, staralfur, or e-bow.
Especially in ( ) the drum beats are original and unlike anything I'd heard before (alafoss, daolaggio etc.), tough to follow some times. In ny batterei they use a cymbal that had been run over by a car, and I can't even describe what orri uses in glosoli.
My faves (drumming wise): Von, Svefn-g-englar, Ny Batterei, Fyrsta, Njosnavelin, Popplaggio, Glosoli and Meo suo i eyrum.

many people think that if the songs don't have a drumbeat or agressive chords then they are depressive... or that the lyrics are shit if they don't say things like oh you are so so so so so sext and i wanna fuck you fuck you fuck you yeah hot!
INstead Sigur Rós is uplifting, intense and brilliant
hahaha... sigur ros is not depressive music at all... the lyrics are really worth.. you see, Inní mér syngur vitleysingur has meaningful words in the song... i can repeat a hundred times in one day!!

Went to my universities film festival today and the very last film (that ended up winning) was by a guy who used to live on my hall about the life of a cyclist, and it featured a sigur ros soundtrack! The songs in the film were Hljómalind and Flugufrelsarinn, and the fact that they weren't typical Sigur Ros songs like Hoppipolla boosted by respect for him and the film loads. I even stayed around afterwards to congratulate him and compliment the music.

God I just cant choose a favourite albom of theirs!
Agaetis Byrjun: sort of more relaxin and atmospheirc album with a a lot of use of electronic and string stuff.
(): Well, it's the same as agaetis byrjun, but this one they use only the traditional instruments and piano, and even Jonsi's voice becomes just another instrument.
Takk: A mix of both, with, an art album.
með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust: a more acoustic album
Von: their debut
But all of their albums are magical and perfect

Brosandi Smiling
Hendumst í hringi Spinning round and round
Höldumst í hendur Holding hands
Allur heimurinn óskýr The whole world a blur
nema þú stendur But you are standing
Rennblautur Soaked
Allur rennvotur Completely drenched
Engin gúmmístígvél No rubber boots
Hlaupandi inni í okkur Running inside us
Vill springa út úr skel Want to erupt from a shell
Vindurinn The Wind
og útilykt af hárinu þínu An outdoor smell of your hair
Ég anda eins fast og ég get I breathe as hard as I can
með nefinu mínu with my nose
Hoppípolla Jump into puddles
Í engum stígvélum With no boots on
Allur rennvotur(Rennblautur) completely drenched(Soaked)
Í engum stígvélum With no boots on

I don't think many people aren't transported by their music when they hear it. Coming from iceland, it's like they're untainted by the flaws and patterns in western music today. Never heard anything like it. They brought a whole new alien, musical civilization into light.

They sing mostly in icelandic, however several songs an album are sung partially or entirely in "Hopelandic" which is made up of nonsense syllables that don't really mean anything. Their only song sung in English is the very last song of their latest album, called "All Alright".

My mom has been getting all uptight lately about me listening to music while I study (), and finally declared that I'm only allowed to listen to stuff without lyrics. I went off on a rant about how Sigur Ros should fall into the study music category, because technically if I don't understand the lyrics it's more or less like classical music, plus Jonsi's voice is an instrument anyway. She finally caved after I showed her many examples to prove my points. Yay Iceland.

Listen to Takk... and then Agaetis Byrjun. Those are their best and closest to the overall sound of the band. ( ) (the least accessible) and Meo su i eyrum...(their most accessible album) are wonderful too, but they're departures from the band's "normal" sound, so it'd give you kind of a false impression.

I really like the name ara batur. It means "rowboat"
Row Boat
You tried everything
Yes, a thousand times
Experienced enough
Been through enough
But you it was who let everything
Into my heart
And it was you who once again
Awoke my spirit
I parted, you parted
You stir up
Emotions
In a blender
Everything in disarray
But it was you who was always
There for me
It was you who never judged
My true friend
I parted, you parted
(hopelandic)
You sail on rivers
With an old oar
Leaking badly
You swim to shore
Pushed the waves away
But to no avail
You float on the sea
Sleep on the surface
Light through the fog
(hopelandic)

I think it depends how you got it. On the actual album none of the tracks have names, so they're referred to as untitled 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. However because that gets kind of annoying, there are other names that the tracks go by like "Vaka" and "Fyrsta". If you got the tracks online, they may have already substituted the secondary names.

"Untitled #3 (Samskeyti)" (6:33)
"Untitled #4 (Njósnavélin)" (7:33)

And I've been so lucky to have seen them 3 times last year.
The first time was at Rock Werchter, but I only knew Ágætis Byrjun a little bit. It was amazing, they blew me away. Since then I bought all their albums in like 1,5 month time.
Then I saw them on a dutch festival Lowlands, which was the magical experience I talked about before. Wonderfull.
Last november they played in Amsterdam and I went there, but then I got a phonecall, there was a complication with my sisters surgery. So I couldn't enjoy the concert so much and left after 6 songs. I wasn't able to listen to Sigur Rós for a few months, because now their music connected me to that stupid day of my sisters surgery.
Now I'm at a point I can enjoy it again, and I'm glad, because it's such a special band with great music.

I think it's amazing how they're one of those bands that you can enjoy at a concert with out knowing a lot of the music that you're actually listening to. At almost any other concert, if I only knew a few of the songs, I would not enjoy myself. But, for instance, at the Sigur Ros concert I went to last October- I knew about 6 of the songs they played, and even though the rest was completely foreign to me (since then I've listened to it all, though), it was still an amazing experience. I think that's definitely one way you can tell if a band is truly brilliant or not.

my friend's sister saw them when she was visiting in Australia. She never listened or heard of them prior and she said that it was one of the most amazing concerts she's ever attended and apparently she's been to hundreds of shows

what songs do you remember from the concert?
I remember the most from the second time I saw them, it was on a Dutch festival, in a tent.
And usually when I'm at a concert, I move with the music, if you know what I mean.. just shake your head or sing along.
But this concert, I haven't moved one inch. I stood still the whole time, with my mouth wide open I think :P I was in a sort of trance, hihi.. so brilliant!
And when they played Festival, the tears were streaming down my face. That's the one song I remember crying to, and I think I had some other moments when tears popped into my eyes, but I don't know which songs that were. :)

So who fell for their April Fools day joke? :P
an update on what the band has been up to lately. recently we announced that jónsi and alex will release an album in the summer, and that kjartan is set to score the film ‘ondine’. we are now happy to announce that kjartan will also be writing and arranging strings for 4 songs on coldplay’s as-yet-untitled follow up album to 2008’s acclaimed ‘viva la vida’. kjartan has already completed most of the arrangements, which are set to be recorded in late spring. in addition to kjartan’s contribution, jónsi will join chris martin on vocals on one of the album’s songs. we were fortunate enough to be allowed to visit coldplay’s rehearsal space while jónsi and chris were rehearsing their collaboration, which promises to be nothing short of amazing. we filmed a short video from the session, which is now viewable on youtube here.

Takk and Agaetis Byrjun are the best and Meo suo i eyrum is the most accessible. ( ) is amazing too, but I wouldn't recommend starting with it (like I did).

Yeah actually. I just went with the most interesting looking cover (it was also cheaper than takk.. I think).
It was new and really fascinating to me. And the first four tracks are still really sensational. Vaka and Samskeyti really stuck with me, and after hearing hoppipolla on you-tube I decided to keep exploring.
So then I bought Meo suo i eyrum because I thought their most recent album would be a safe bet. Not their best of course, but its still amazing and spectacular. And it was great to hear those great voices and instruments placed in something more rythmic and upbeat...

I did love meo suo... I mean, it wasn't their best album, but it was very different from what they have done before, and there are some amazing songs like ara batur for example and inni mer, although the feeling of this newer album is more acoustic and happy, but I still love it, maybe not as much as the others but you can't compare at all:
agaetis byrjun: ambient rock with heavy classical music influence, an spectacular mix that makes a gorgeous and solid album
(): probably the best post-rock album ever
takk: art rock, something close to art and variety, what I would say "baroque" :P
með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust:sort of acoustic, and maybe like a more personal and café style music, beautiful anyway
Tnspieler1012
12-04-2009, 05:33 AM
Yeah, its unfair to compare directly because it denotes that meo suo i eyrum is somehow flawed, when I personally wouldn't change a thing. They're just stylistically different but with different strokes of brilliance. Takk... and Agaetis Byrjun just stand out because they're more impacting, but with the exception of tracks like ara batur and flotavik, Meo Suo I eyrum wasn't intended to be like thoe albums. It was more fun and light-hearted. I'm really excited to see what their next album will be like!
I also like the description of "baroque" with takk... you get that feeling especially on the second half with tracks like milano, svo hlott, and heysatan.
